...Home School versus Public School One of the most important questions parents are faced with today is what form of education is the best motivator for their children, home school or public school. Parents must educate themselves on the pros and cons of both options before making such an important decision. Although home schooling may be the best choice for one child, it does not necessarily mean it will be the best form of education for all of the children in the family. Both options provide the same education, but go about teaching it in different ways. Many parents believe that teaching their children at home will provide a safer environment for their kids to learn. Although it may be a safer environment to learn, home schooled children are missing out on socializing with their peers and will lack social skills needed to succeed later in life. More than 1 million students are being home schooled today, and their ranks are growing about 15% a year (Winters 1). The present study compared the academic achievements of homeschooled children with children attending traditional public school. When the homeschooled group was divided into those who were taught from organized lesson plans (structured homeschoolers) and those who were not (unstructured homeschoolers), the data showed that structured homeschooled children achieved higher standardized scores compared with children attending public school. Furthermore, an education is “the process of receiving or giving systematic instruction” or “an enlightening experience.” (Merriam-Webster) Every child is required to go to school whether it is public, private, or from home.
