Pudd'nhead Wilson was the town eccentric, who came to a small Missouri town attempting to pursue law.Though with his sense of humor his services were not taken seriously, resulting in his law career going nowhere. He spends his spare time toying with odd hobbies like fingerprint collecting and palmistry.Pudd'nhead also has a calendar full of personal sayings and quotes.Despite being an outsider, Judge Driscoll remains to be his best friend.He was unique and different than the other town people,giving him a reputation to be a fool, and jokester. The novel begins in Dawson’s Landing Missouri, where the houses are perfectly painted and the fences are picket. From the town is a country side stretch where the slaves work,grow grain and raise pigs. When David Wilson arrives to the town he makes a sly, sarcastic comment about owning half of a dog.Chapter one states, “The incident was told all over town, and gravely discussed by everybody.Within a week he had lost his first name;it was replaced by pudd’nhead”(Twain 30).This name sticks for the next twenty years. For instance, when he was fooled into telling “Tom” his plan for catching the thief of the twin’s knife.Though this plan did not blow over as expected, the idea was still very clever. To secretly negotiate with the pawn dealers in order to catch the thief was a sly idea and possibly could have worked if it had gone as expected.This also happens to be another prime example of Pudd'nhead problem solving ways, and clever ideas.
