...the capitalist countries of the world in the recent past. Globalization in particular has led to the birth and expansion of neo-colonialism. Puerto Rico forms the most significant example of this movement. First, it was a colony of Spain for about 4 centuries. However, through war, the country managed to kick out their colonial masters in 1898. Thereafter, the United States, a modern colonial master was obtained. As a consequence, struggle for independence and nationalism of the country has been frustrated by the hegemonic power created by the United States. Further, the economy of the country has been extremely downtrodden and this forms the focus of the paper. On 3rd May 2017, Puerto Rico was officially declared the largest bankrupt nation by the public bond market of the United States. As stated by Gonzalez (2017), the economy of the country has reached a breaking point with a debt of $123 billion owed by the government and public corporations to the bondholders. This is ironical for a country that has been dubbed by many as a perfect tourist destination. The poverty level in the country...

Hudson Jr, William Del Valle MGT/448 Global Business Strategies February 15, 2012 John O'Brien, MBA Final Global Business Plan Paper * In the previous weeks, Team D set out to gain a better understanding of globalization and determine if opportunities exist for branching out their fictional company DeltaCompCarib (DCC) into a new global market. During this time the team developed a business strategy to promote DCC and bring its product line to Puerto Rico. Early on DCC had to conduct a regional analysis, country analysis, and an organization and product or service analysis. Regional Analysis Regional Alliances and Economic Integration Puerto Rico is just one of many Caribbean countries, which make up the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM). This regional integration between Caribbean countries, formed in 1973. According to the United States Trade International Commission (2008), “The purpose of regional integration is to achieve economic gains through free trade flow and investments between neighboring countries often by lowering or eliminating tariffs against imports from fellow member countries. These actions increase duty free trade, tourism, movement of labor, and the flow of capital across national borders, reducing the possibility of conflict. Regional integration promotes global business in that it removes, in stages or altogether...

CONCEPT OF MERCANTILE RIGHT Mercantile right is the negotiation or traffic that applies to commerce for the purpose of making a profit. This right is protected by laws that give a person or business entity the right to engage in commerce. According to Tulane University Professor Vernon V. Palmer (2001), Puerto Rico's mercantile law stems from various sources (primarily Spanish and US) and has different statutes for different areas that are relative to commercial and industry. In 1995, Puerto Rico adopted Articles 5, 7, 8, and 9 of the United States' Uniform Commercial Code and as such, greatly affected by legal changes and decisions in the US. ...one race attempting to exert supremacy over others has often resulted in racial discrimination (LegalCyberTips, 2007). Racial discrimination is a constant reality in the lives of Hispanic Americans in the United States. Due to alarming migration rates over the past several decades, the United States has experienced significant growth in ethnic and racial diversity. However, racial minority groups like the Hispanics; “the largest and fastest growing population in the United States, continue to struggle for full acceptance and equal opportunity” (Louie, 2005, Para 1). The migration of Hispanic groups such as the Puerto Rican Americans was not readily accepted by the United States causing immediate social inequality. This social inequality caused segregation and forced the Puerto Rican Americans to work the lowest paying jobs and live in the poorest communities. This paper identifies factors that influence past and present discrimination trends that have lead to the segregation, racial redlining and stereotyping of the Hispanic American in the United States. The term Hispanic was established by the United States Government in the early 1970's, “in an attempt to identify a diverse group of people among the population with a connection to the Spanish language or culture” (U.S. Diplomatic Mission to Germany, 2008, Para 2). Although the term Hispanic is automatically associated with Spanish speaking or Latin American ancestry, it is a term that very few people understand. Hispanics...

...Research Paper The effects of the United States Imperialism By Andrew Watterson John Brown University 3/6/2013 American imperialism is believed to have truly begun in 1898 when America fought the Spanish in order to obtain Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippines. The Spanish-American War was during the presidential administration of President McKinley. It was caused by the sinking of the U.S. battleship, USS Maine, in Havana harbor in 1898. War was declared and the United States won quickly. Under the treaty of the U.S. acquired Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines from Spain in return for $20 million. Later on President McKinley was assassinated in 1901 and vice president Theodore Roosevelt stepped up to fill his role as commander and chief. Now that the American army was a worldwide force to be reckoned with, and a headstrong, powerful leader was in control, the tone was set for an American empire to be formed. A glimpse into the newspaper articles of this era will help illuminate the thoughts of the American people’s thoughts of an empirical nation. In the all stages of the American empire, there have always been mixed feelings of the idea, that either it would be a commercial success and a glorious thing for the nation, where as others suggested that we were no better than the British empire that we broke away from. “It is pointed out that such an empire would be the greatest the world has ever seen, and, the possessions that America has won from Spain during...

...Somatic Symptom Disorder A Nature vs. Nurture Debate By Jennifer Nguyen July 3, 2015 The Disorder While many mental disorders are well-known and commonly referred to, such as bipolar disorder, depression, and anorexia, one mental disorder that has less limelight are somatoform disorders. WebMD defined somatoform disorders as “mental illnesses that cause bodily symptoms, including pain” where these symptoms cannot be “traced back to any physical cause” and they are “not the result of substance abuse of another mental illness” (WebMD). The Criteria & Associated Behaviors In DSM-IV, somatization disorder was the major somatoform disorder. There were many criteria for this disorder. However, in DSM-V, somatoform disorders were largely replaced by the term somatic symptom disorder, hereon referred to as SSD, which DSM-V characterizes by “somatic symptoms that are either very distressing or result in significant disruption of functioning, as well as excessive and disproportionate thoughts, feelings and behaviors regarding those symptoms. With this new change in DSM-V, somatization disorder (previously in DSM-IV) is now completely removed and replaced. The previous diagnosis of somatization disorder required very specific criteria. However, the new criteria for SSD is not as specific, but it does state that “somatic symptoms must be significantly distressing or disruptive to daily live and must be accompanied by excessive thoughts, feelings, or behaviors” (DSM).
