Filtering and Purifying water before you drink it has now become a crucial part of living in a rapidly growing, economically expanding world. Did you know that roughly one-eighth of the world's population lacks access to safe water supplies, while as many as 2.5 billion people live without sanitized water? Untreated water is made up of unhealthy chemicals and contaminants that if taken in through the body can lead to some fatal diseases. Water purification plants remove harmful impurities through a process of pretreatment, coagulation, filtration, and disinfection, making our water safe to drink. There are a few steps in purifying water that I will be discussing with you shortly.

The first step in water purification is pretreatment. During pretreatment, water is pumped in from its source and screened to remove any large objects, leaves, and debris before reaching the holding tanks. Next, the coagulation process begins. Coagulation removes the dirt and other particles from the water by adding a chemical that forms a sticky substance called “floc”. Floc combines with dirt as the water moves to a sedimentary basin. The sedimentary is then removed from the water giving water its clear, colorless quality.

While coagulation removes the sedimentation from the water, the second to last process is taking place which is the filtration phase which pushes the remaining particles through filters of sand and charcoal. Filtration reduces the water by about 90 to 95 percent. The last process phase is disinfection. During this phase chlorine is added to kill any living germ or bacteria. After its disinfected the water is tested safety and released to the plant for safe consumption.

Upon closing I have discussed with you the statistics of non purified water and the steps it takes to purify. This may seem much to us in the United States but somewhere in the country someone is still drinking unpurified water today. Lets gets this word and steps out and stop the consumption of dirty water. Please be sure to follow everyone of these steps correctly pretreatment, coagulation, filtration, and disinfection to have safe and drinkable water.

Why Do We Drink Tap Water?

...finding my favorite bottled water, Dasani. To my dismay, the Dasani is nowhere to be found. I question my father, asking where the water is. He replies with the one phrase I hate. “Just drink tap water.” I have never enjoyed tap water. After he said that, I began to question why I hated the mere thought of having to drink water from the kitchen sink. Why does it matter? Isn’t all water, well, just water? A quick glance at the Dasani water bottle next to me as I type this shows that the water I am drinking is from Atlanta’s tap water system. However,...

Recycled Water In Australia

...Australia’s current water system is under an immense amount of pressure, the Australian government has stated that sometime in the near future Australian citizens will use recycled sewerage for drinking water. Purifying and cleaning the waste water goes through several stages primary, secondary and tertiary. Primary treatment removes large particles from the sewage water, secondary treatment removes smaller particles and dissolved pollutants and tertiary treatment filters out almost all remaining particles. For the water to be able to be used for human consumption it has to go through advanced treatment it uses ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis to clean the...

Water Quality and Contamination

...Week 5 – Water Quality and Contamination Final Lab Rona Harris SCI 207: Dependence of Man on the Environment Instructor: Jacqueline Poole 10/6/2013 Week 5 – Water Quality and Contamination Final Lab Abstract Testing of how ground water is affected by different contaminants was the bases of the experiment. The results were interesting in that when vinegar is filtered through dirt it came out fairly clean. This is surprising because I did not think that any of the contaminants used would affect the water the way it did with vinegar. I figured all the water would have dirt mixed in with the water that was filtered. This shows that maybe we can find a way to find a safer choice on how we filter and purify water. Introduction In this Lab we will explore how contaminants affect the water supply. Contaminants can be anything from human waste, chemicals used in farming and industrial factories to the laundry detergent and cooking oil that you use at home. We are going to asking how and why this affects us when we drink water from the faucet. One contaminant that is found in water is lead. Studies have shown that lead can led to developmental delays in kids and can cause cancer in adults. According to Bruce Lanphear a pediatric epidemiologist, “Lead in water is an underappreciated service of lead intake" (Renner, 2009. A544) It is estimated that 10-20% of children are exposed to lead through the drinking water according to the Centers for Disease Control and...

Small Stream Research Paper

...depends on the amount of runoff with sediment. If it is excessive, the small stream will “degrade the water quality… downstream” and it can cause dead-zones in the large stream (Schwinnen). These large streams have many benefits to humans and both Schwinnen and Laughbaum discussed the same topics. Some river systems are used for drinking water and recreational purposes, like boating and fishing. Larger rivers can be used as a mode for transportation, like the Mississippi River. Although Rose Run is not a large stream, it also has an effect on humans. Rose Run belongs to many watersheds, the largest ending up into the Gulf of Mexico, but more directly Rose Run will feed into Alum Creek and Big Walnut Creek. These major streams are used for recreational purposes and they supply drinking water to towns south of Columbus. Rose Run’s poor health could make these large streams unhealthy, which impact people’s drinking water. Pollution and altering an ecosystem can have drastic effects on a stream and on people. If small streams continued to be polluted, both Schwinnen and Laughbaum agreed that there could be lasting effects. Firstly, there would be a loss of biodiversity in small streams. Schwinnen discussed the degrading impact on property value and the increase in cost for purifying drinking water. Laughbaum brought up the impact unhealthy small streams have on the control of water levels, and there would be major flooding issues. The direct impact on people is easy to see as both...

Water Scarcity

...by water scarcity? Water scarcity can be defined as the lack of sufficient available water resources, lack access to fresh water, potable water for drinking and sanitation to meet the demands of water usage within a region. Water scarcity occurs because the population is increasing around the world coupled with urbanization and industrialization so the demand for water is increasing and this will lead to serious consequences on the environment. Water scarcity divided into two types that are physical water scarcity and economic water scarcity. Physical (absolute) water scarcity occurs when there is not sufficient water to meet demand. This could be the result of dry or arid local conditions. Physical water scarcity occurs because of abundant source of water being overused and over managed. There is another equally challenging source of water scarcity: economic factors. Economic water scarcity is predominant lack of infrastructure investments are political and ethnic problems. Over 1.2 billion are basically living in areas of physical water scarcity. And almost 1.6 billion face economic water shortage. Water scarcity involves water stress, water shortage or deficits, and water crisis. Water stress is the difficulty of obtaining sources of fresh water. Water shortages caused by climate change for example droughts or root impairment, pollution, increased human demand and overuse of water. Water crisis is a situation where the available potable, unpolluted water within...

Their culture focuses on “What we believe in and how we act collectively.” They believe in targeting emerging markets to contribute to their total sales. Unilever expects emerging markets to account for 70% of total sales by the end of the decade (Procter & Gamble Vs. Unilever: Comparing 2 Consumer Staples Giants, 2013). Environment-How Can You Help to Protect It?

...Environment - how can you help to protect it? Environment is an important part of human life and a healthy environment is a must for human existence. Therefore, it is crucial that we take care of our surroundings and help nature maintain ecological balance so that we could hand over to the coming generations the environment as we found it, if not any better. Our planet is changing. There are a lot of things that affect our planet in a bad way but the good news is that everyone can help to reduce them and do their bit for the environment. While exploring six important topics that affect our community : Electricity (Energy), Pollution, Food, Water, Rubbish, Rainforest, I'll present the damage and a list of ways that we can all contribute to help our planet get better. 1. Electricity Energy is everywhere. We use energy to move the mouse for a computer, to jump and shout and walk and run. It takes energy to power a light bulb, and the light that the bulb gives off is also a form of energy. Other forms of energy include heat, chemical energy, gravitational energy and nuclear power. Electricity is a form of energy and this is what powers the TV, the kettle, dishwasher, hairdryer, toaster, remote control, mobile phone, fridge, stereo, electric toothbrush, and more. Our growing need for energy is one of the problems facing the world today, because producing electricity also produces our next topic - pollution. How to help? When you’re using electricity think about where it comes from...

Florence Nightengale

...Abstract Florence Nightingale is known as the “mother of modern nursing.” Her intelligence, classical education, religious beliefs as a Unitarian, and her family’s social status were all attributes that stimulated her drive to begin what nursing is currently. Nightingale’s Environmental Model is one of the earliest grand theories. It connects the concepts of the patient, the nurse, the environment, and health. Florence Nightingale pioneered the theory that the environment affects an individual’s health and illness, and that nurses can influence health by controlling environmental factors such as light, temperature, noise, sanitation, cleanliness, and diet. Florence Nightingale’s Environmental Model is still one of the most utilized theories today. It is known as a grand theory, but can also be used at the practice level. Keywords: Florence Nightingale, Environmental Model, environment, grand theory Florence Nightingale: Environmental Model Florence Nightingale was a pioneer of her time. Sales Marketing

...BIO-CLEAR Air Purifier * In 1995 Mr. T. Wan of RW & Company agreed with his foreign suppliers that there would be a market for its BIO-CLEAR air purifier in the Philippines. Since there was then as yet no such comparable commercial product in the local market, the decision was made to bring it to the market as fast as possible. This decision was made to preempt the competition, to be able to define the market by being the first product that was to be locally available, and to build up brand equity. Arrangements were therefore made for the initial shipments of the product’s range of models into the Philippines. A year later, however, Mr. Wan was struggling with unsold inventory consisting mostly of the more sophisticated and computerized higher priced models. Sales in the provincial outlets were consistently poorer than predicted versus those in the urban areas, especially Metro Manila. Metro Manila sales, however, were still marginal as well. Product sales were barely covering costs, and Mr. Wan was wondering whether it would be better to simply discontinue offering the line. He would be talking to the foreign supplier’s representatives in a week and needed a good position in order to be able to strike a negotiation with confidence, especially because this supplier was not only the source of the BIO-CLEAR line of air purifiers but also of other home appliance products that RW & Company was selling. Above all, Mr. Wan had to decide as to whether or not he...

Clean Water Balanced Equation

...Clean Water Project Report Day 1- “The Balanced Equation” Documentary Notes In the documentary, “The Balanced Equation”, a group of high school girls tells their story of traveling to Kenya and the Dominican Republic to investigate and learn more about issues dealing with water in developing countries. The girls focus primarily on problems with water that exist in these countries and the water filtration systems being provided. According to the video, approximately 3.5 million people die from water-related illnesses each year, and over 800 million people do not have access to clean water today. The girls discover that portable point-of-use filtration devices are given to those in developing countries who don’t have access to clean water. Permanent water solutions, such as digging wells, have been tried, but often fail due to lack of maintenance and education. Wells often become contaminated with runoff water among other issues, so over 50% of these permanent solutions fail after 5 years. Instead, point-of-use water systems are distributed since they are portable and can be used at home. The girl’s spent their first night of their adventure in...

The format of the examination was the same as in previous years. Paper 01 consisted of 60 Multiple Choice items. Paper 02 consisted of ten compulsory structured questions in Section A, each worth ten marks, and four essay questions in Section B, each worth 20 marks. Candidates were required to answer any two of the four essay questions. General Comments There was significant improvement in candidate performance in 2008. Seventy-seven per cent of the candidates achieved Grades I – III in 2008 compared with 47 per cent in 2007. This improvement was also reflected in the performance in both profiles, Profile 1, Knowledge and Comprehension, and Profile 2, Use of Knowledge. While performance on Paper 01, the Multiple Choice paper, declined slightly, analysis of the equating items reveals that except for two items, the profiles are parallel and at the same level in 2008 and in 2006 (the year with which the items were equated). Candidate performance on Paper 02 improved significantly. This may be attributed to at least two factors: 1. This is the third...
