Pursuing Trayvon Martin: Historical Contexts and Contemporary Manifestations of Racial Dynamics edited by George Yancy and Janine Jones, analyze what really happened to Trayvon Martin and the police officer George Zimmerman. My primary source revolves around this book and how Martin was being racially profile by the police officer based on the color of his skin. Martin killed because he looked “suspicious” enough to be doing something that he was not suppose to be doing. Most of the times when men of color are being stopped by police officers are mainly because of what they looked like and not the actual purpose. Because of racial profile, an innocent man lost his life. O’reilly examines the systematic forces within Police institutions. This book covers how police officers uses race as a tool of targeting specific group of people with the assumption of possessing drugs. In Maryland and New Jersey specially, there was a case going on from the complaints from the citizens about how minorities were more than likely to be stopped by a police officers because of the color of their skin. Profiling alone in some way is need to target criminals and what not, but “it is the mistaken shortcut between race and criminal behaviors” (O’Reilly 6). There are some police officers that take these matters seriously on the selection of race that they use force, hostile confrontation and physical assaults to address certain issues regarding minorities. The problem does not align with the simple fact of profiling, but the use of race as a single factor of targeting just selective group of people.
