...A01-06-0012 Graeme Rankine Aussie Pies (A) “Wow, Australians really love their meat pies,” Anna Amphlett said to Andrew Ferris as they sat at the Melbourne Cricket Ground watching the Australian Football League (AFL) Grand Final between the Sydney Swans and the West Coast Eagles. “I’ve seen people eat three meat pies straight, then wash them down with a full liter of Fosters Lager,” she said as she looked across to see Sydney win the 2005 Premiership with a score of 58-54. According to observers, “Sydney has ended the longest premiership drought in AFL history in the most emotional and heart-stopping fashion imaginable by beating the West Coast Eagles by four points in the most exciting and closest grand final for nearly 40 years.”1 “But it’s not just at footy matches,” Ferris noted, “they eat them all the time, just like we eat hamburgers and hotdogs back in the States.” Ferris thought about the number of pies eaten by the 100,000 people attending the AFL Grand Final. Amphlett and Ferris lived in Seattle, Washington, but were on a vacation to Australia to visit the Great Barrier Reef and attend the Grand Final in Melbourne. “I wonder if Americans might develop a following for the Aussie meat pie,” he said to Anna… “perhaps there’s a business opportunity back home.” Australian Meat Pies The meat pie, a hand-sized pot pie made with pastry and filled with minced (ground) beef and gravy, is consumed as a takeaway food snack in Australia (see Exhibit 1 for an illustration...

...9-201-113 REV: AUGUST 27, 2001 D O LISA MEULBROEK Risk Management at Apache N Introduction O By March of 2001, managers at Apache Corporation, an independent oil and gas exploration and production company, had reason to be optimistic. While oil prices had softened somewhat recently, at $27 a barrel they were much higher than the pernicious levels of 1998, when oil bottomed out at $11 per barrel. Apache had just closed on the acquisition of Repsol in Egypt's Western desert and, along with its partner Shell Overseas Holdings, had also acquired Fletcher Challenge Energy, for a combined cost of $1 billion. The value of such acquisitions, however, depended in large part on the future prices of oil and gas. To decrease its exposure to oil and gas price volatility, Apache had begun a limited hedging program centered mostly on its recently acquired properties. Apache’s managers knew that hedging could create its own risks, and so it seemed prudent to re-evaluate the success of the new program. The decision facing Apache’s managers was whether the firm should continue hedging, and if so, should its current program be extended beyond hedging the revenues from acquisitions? T CO Apache Corporation PY Apache Corporation was founded in 1954 by Raymond Plank, its current Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Plank’s son, Roger, was the company’s current CFO, but the company was not controlled by the Plank family, and in fact, officers and...

...Sammy’s head. First, when Sammy saw the three girls entering the grocery store wearing bathing suits, his whole mind frame changed from being a working person to being an ordinary teenager. He entered into a gaze of the girls not giving his full attention to the customer standing right at his register. Sammy was so focused on the girls who did not knew he even existed at the time to where he could not make sure the customer at his register was satisfy, “ I stood there with my hand on a box of HiHo crackers trying to remember if I rang it up or not”, (Uplike 201). Secondly, Sammy really acted like a teenager when Lengel approached the girls at the register about coming into the store wearing bathing suits and how to dress the next time they come to the store. Lengel asked Sammy have he rung the girls purchase up yet and Sammy reacted with making the drawer sprung open as to say “ ‘Hello (bing), there, you (gung) hap-py pee-pul (splat)!’ ” (204). As the girls rushed out Sammy blurted out a spur-of-the-moment decision “ ‘I said I quit’ ” for all of the wrong reasons (204). He lets his "teenage boy" mentality get in the way. Sammy tried to be a hero by defending the girls hoping to gain a relationship with them. In reality he lost his job and did not became the girl’s hero. His well intention act did not have the turnout he thought. At the last minute Sammy...

...Vasconcellos Fabiana Vasconcellos ENG 201 – 526 Apr. 20, 2010 Prof. J. Wynter Societies can be stratified in various ways, such as religion, social class, language, race, ethnicity, gender and sex. These distinctions are either socially constructed or born within the individual. Sex; for example, is based on the ascribed status since it is “imposed by nature” (Renzetti and Curran 137) and biologically determined. In contrast, gender is socially constructed since it “refers to the constellation of traits and behaviors that compose the categories masculine and feminine” (Renzetti and Curran 252). These gender distinctions are reinforced by stereotypes that contribute to social inequality and discrimination in the western societies. Throughout history, our society has always complied with gender roles, however today we are walking through a path to reverse them. Having been conformed to mother’s role for 40 years, Sarah Pen the main character in Mary E. Wilkins Freeman’ “The Revolt of the Mother” gains self-confidence to challenge traditional gender roles and reverses them in order to live in a better home. Our society has always characterized men and women in different ways and expected different behaviors from them. “[M]en have generally been the dominant sex and women have been subordinate to them” (Robertson 217). Men are also “strong”, “rational” and “aggressive” while women are “weak”, “emotional”, and “submissive” (Basow 1). These masculine and feminine traits show...
