At Colby there exists many wonderful opportunities called Wellness seminars that allow for the students of Colby to explore, in a safe secure environment how to navigates the pitfalls and caveats of life. These Wellness seminars range from yoga to suicide prevention to meditation. Based off Yasir Qadhi and Ben Sommer, I have concluded that an interesting seminar would be sessions where the two discuss the sexual activity of Colby students. Both sessions would be different and both Qadhi and Sommer would use their ideas on how to interpret the scripture and holy doctrine. I agree with this and how authoritative rules and figures are decided on by the community in which you reside. However, I would find issue with Sommer’s emphasis on how it is not up to the individual to question certain traditions. I personally do not believe that leaving a certain authoritative junction has to be such a painstaking and long process decided on by the group. I think that such a personal issue such as sexual activity and how one places authority on how to act is in large part a personal interpretation: interpretation of whatever, that may be scripture or not. Colby students should not have to follow the herd or democratically express a consensus on this cultural topic.
