...Running Head: QUALITATIVE RESEARCH ARTICLE CRITIQUE Qualitative Research Article Critique Corey J. Ivany (MUN ID#: 009435660) Education 6100 Memorial University of Newfoundland Abstract This paper is an academic critique of a qualitative research article written by Karen Dorgan (2004) entitled: A Year in the Life of an Elementary School: One School’s Experiences in Meeting New Mathematics Standards. Throughout the course of the 1999-2000 school year, Dorgan observed and interviewed teachers who were members of the faculty of an economically and racially diverse elementary school in Virginia. The purpose behind the case study was to examine how the changes in the state Standards of Learning would effect pedagogical decision making, teaching and learning, and methods of instruction and evaluation. My evaluation/critique of this article is an holistic interpretation of the study as an example of a qualitative research project and is based on my understandings of this type of study from my involvement in Education 6100: Research and Design Methods from Memorial University of Newfoundland. My concern is to develop a systematic and analytical discussion based around the degree to which this case study exemplifies the characteristics of qualitative research. Qualitative Research Article Critique In her article A Year in the Life of an Elementary School: One School’s Experiences in Meeting New Mathematics Standards, Karen Dorgan (2004)...

...Qualitative Research Article Critique Marianne Green Grand Canyon University Introduction to Nursing Research NRS 433V July 21, 2012 Qualitative Research Article Critique Deciding to proceed with a surgical procedure is not always easy to achieve. Financial concerns are considered due to the time off of work that is necessary for the recovery process. Reduction in income due to surgical procedures can place a hardship on society as well as the patient. The following paper is a critique of a qualitative research article published in 2010 by BMC Gastroenterology titled “Assessing factors influencing return back to work after cholecystectomy” (Keus, De Vries, Gooszen, & Van Laarhoven, 2010). Problem Statement For the past one-hundred years open cholecystectomy (OC) was considered a safe surgical standardized procedure. Then in the 1970’s came the small incision cholecystectomy (SIC) which had a significant decrease in post-operative complications. Before the SIC could really gain popularity, came the laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC). The LC procedure soon gained immense popularity and became the surgery of choice. However, both SIC and LC procedures are preferred because they typically require less hospital stay and quicker return to work times (Keus et al., 2010). This study was conducted due to the increase in financial burden on society due to the increase in indirect costs associated with the employee’s sick leave. The clinical problem is the extended...

...Title of Paper In order to obtain the greatest benefit from research, it is necessary to interpret results accurately. The development and application of critical thinking skills is paramount when reading and evaluating research articles, rather than to take the research as fact. The following paper is a critique of a qualitative research article published in 2007 by Journal of Critical Nursing, titled “The Effects of Different Maternal Positions on Non-Stress Test: An Experimental Study”. Title and Introduction The title “The Effects of Different Maternal Positions on Non-Stress Test: An Experimental Study” (Alus, Okumus, Mete, Guclu, 2007) accurately reflected the content of the article and research study. The abstract remained concise as well as provided more detail to the article. The objectives, background, study design, means of data collection and analysis, results; conclusion, and relevance to clinical practice were all mentioned in a brief paragraph. The importance of the study was clearly stated, obtaining erroneous results from non-stress tests, when, indeed, the fetus is healthy and well oxygenated. The authors further described the supine position showed the least fetal activity, increased maternal back pain as well as maternal shortness of breath. (Alus, Okumus, Mete, & Serkan, 2007). The introduction was informative and included additional information into the understanding of decreased fetal movement. Alcohol intake, smoking, certain medications...

...Dependent and Independent Variables The two articles that I did my research on to identify methodologies and dependent and independent variables are Other mothering as a Framework for Understanding African American Students’ definition of Student-Centered Faculty and A Qualitative Study Exploring Mothers’ Perception of Child Neglect. Both articles use the ethnography participant observation and nonparticipant observation methodologies when summarizing these articles. The first article illustrates through observation and research that it indicates that faculty/student relationship affect student satisfaction with college. The dependent variable is the relationship students have with faculty and the independent variable is the satisfaction that African Americans are satisfied with the school which could affect participation in school ultimately determining what types of grades that are achieved. This qualitative definitively illustrates how social setting plays a part in the dependent and independent variables because the research article concludes” that black students attending predominately white institutions had less contact with faculty outside the classroom and were less academically integrated into campus life than were white students”. Nettles (1991). Additionally, Fleming (1984) her examining the experience of black students at PWIs and at Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Arnold (1993) “in a study investigating the college experience of high school valedictorians...

...Assessing a Research Study Sally Oxendine Dr.Dunston March 30, 2016 The article that I found to be useful was Qualitative Research and its Uses in Health Care. This article was very interesting and I gathered helpful information that related to the characteristics of health related research. This article is based on describing detailed methods that identify different key elements that relate to health care and highlight different features that will discuss social and character dimensions. The Qualitative Research with health care has many different strategies and methods of care that has been research with relative and positive tactics of progressive health care resources. This article was really informative and beneficial as far as gathering key elements to the studies of Qualitative Research and the uses in health care. Qualitative research is defined as an umbrella term covering an array of interpretative techniques which seek to describe, decode, translate and otherwise come to terms with the meaning, not the frequency, of certain more or less naturally occurring phenomena in the social world (Al-Busaidi, 2005). The term umbrella is used to cover different areas around its surroundings. So the concept of Qualitative Research is designed to gather and cover the basics of health care and understand research data. Qualitative Research can also be used to study issues with doctor and patient type reaction and key elements that could be useful in developing a better...

...Professional Development: Critiquing Research The ability to critique (critically analyse and evaluate) research from both the qualitative and quantitative paradigms is an essential skill for occupational therapists. It is this skill, integrated with expertise gained from clinical practice that underpins evidence based practice (EBP). Although there are many definitions of EBP, Muir Gray (1997) defines it as “an approach to decision making in which the clinician uses the best evidence available, in consultation with the patient, to decide upon the option which suits the patient best." The purpose of this assignment is to enable the development of skills in critical analysis by critiquing a research article, which will contribute to further development of knowledge and skills in using EBP in clinical settings. A framework developed by Hek and Moule (2006) (see pages 3- ) has been used to guide the critique of a research article. A framework was used as Caldwell et al (2010 pg e1) argue that “ frameworks assist the novice healthcare practitioner with learning about approaches to research by giving consideration to aspects of the similarities and differences between the qualitative and quantitative research paradigms.” This framework was chosen as it is comprehensive and covers points/questions raised during the critiquing process, although it is important to remember that it is not a definitive checklist and other...

Use these articles to answer the following questions about communication research: 1. Why is it important to be familiar with research about communication and the methods used to perform this research? The most common research methods are: literature searches, talking with people, focus groups, personal interviews, telephone surveys, mail surveys, email surveys, and internet surveys. It is important to know these methods because they allow you more options than, just interviewing people or talking to one person. It is also important to know how to research the topic you wish to research. When you have studied the best research methods, you will be able to provide the best information on the topic you choose. Knowing how to find good sources and bad sources is a great start! 2. What are two quantitative research methods used in communications research? Cause and comparative 3. What are two advantages and two disadvantages for each of the quantitative methods? Qualitative research involves studying phenomena in their natural habitat, rather than in a laboratory setting like quantitative research. Qualitative research obtains a holistic picture of the subject of study and this provides prosperous information and allows for personality differences to excel. It is almost impossible...

...Dashiff, Riley, Abdullatif & Moreland (2011) goal in this article was to describe the experiences of parents of 16 to 18 years old adolescent with type 1 diabetes Mellitus (TIDM). Information gained from this research can be use to develop education program that will help parents with TIDM adolescent self-management efforts. In support of the research, a thorough discussion of the difficulty parents have in letting go when their children reaches the age to take over the management of their diabetes because as parents they have always been the one to provide this serve for their children. Parents as they stated have always been the core in making sure their children achieve a good glycemic control (Dashiff, Riley, Abdullatif & Moreland 2011). The researches made an additional argument in support of their study by stating that there were numerous literatures from the prospective of the adolescent about their parents but that knowledge about parents’ feeling and their behavior is lacking (Dashiff, Riley, Abdullatif & Moreland p.304). The significance of this study, to nursing or health care lies in our nursing code of ethics. The code of ethics 2.1 Primacy of the patient’s interest states ‘The nurse’ primary commitment is to the recipient of nursing and health care services-the parent-whether the recipient is an individual, a family a group, or a community. Nursing holds a fundamental commitment to the uniqueness of the individual patient; therefore, any plan of care...

...BREAST FEEDING COUNSELING Research Critique, Part1 Article Used: LaanteraS, Polkki T, Pietila A-M. International Journal of Nursing Practice 2011; 17: 72-84, “A descriptive qualitative review of the barriers relating to breast-feeding counseling” Problem Statement: Breast-feeding is not only an intimate and bonding experience for many new mothers, but important and very healthy for newborns. Breast-feeding provides newborns with antibodies, and protects them from many health problems along with fighting diseases (WomensHealth.gov). However to know this important information, breast-feeding counseling is a great aid in helping new parents learn all about its benefits. While breast-feeding counseling is beneficial, many parents and mothers do not know about it and many barriers exist. In an article by Laantera et al, called “A descriptive qualitative review of the barriers relating to breast-feeding counseling”, these barriers are identified and can be helpful in developing future measurements to assess barriers for breast-feeding counseling. Little research has been conducted previously on barriers to breast-feeding counseling, which makes this an important topic and problem to address. This topic is also important to discuss because despite breast-feeding benefits, only 35% of infants worldwide are exclusively breast-fed for 6 months (WHO, 2009). Purpose and Research Question: The main purpose of this study was to describe barriers in breast-feeding counseling...

...Practice Nursing Implications Evidence Based Practice Nursing Implications Evidence based practice has been changing the direction of care and clinical research with regards safety, patient centered, and cost efficient care delivered to patients. The purpose of this paper will show the importance of Evidence Based Research by defining this form of research and the importance of using the research to improve on nursing practice. It will also show research examples of qualitative and quantitative studies and how it would improve patient outcomes and nursing practice within the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Barriers will be discussed that prevent nursing from using and embracing the current research. Finally, the conclusions will summarize the main points of this paper. Importance of Evidence Based Research The importance of evidence based research is, and should, be the driving force on nursing practice to patients. It should go hand in hand with the critical thinking skills that nurses already have and use with regards to care. Evidence Based Research is important because it is an accumulation of information that forms clinical practice. Evidence based research incorporates the patient/family, cost, and safety of care to be delivered. It changes the care from; the way it was always done to the way research proves it should be done, which may still be the way it was always done. The difference is that the now the processes are backed by highly reviewed and researched...

... 2013 Outline: A) Introduction. B) Article Analysis. C) Conclusion. Thesis: The present paper provides the analysis of the systematic review “A systematic review of nurses’ inter-shift handoff reports in acute care hospitals” by Poletick & Holly (2010). The influence of this review on clinical practice is discussed. The article “A systematic review of nurses’ inter-shift handoff reports in acute care hospitals” by Poletick & Holly (2010) provides the systematic review of the handoff reports between and among the nurses which ensure the quality exchange of information for the improved health care service. The continuity of care is the major concern for nurses, and the procedure of patient care transfer should take that into account. The objective of the review was stated clearly and mentioned the appraisal and synthesis of the qualitative evidence related to the nursing handoff report. Moreover, the authors aimed at recommending the improvements which would facilitate and enhance the information transfer. by reviewing the qualitative studies which dealt with the real experience of nurses with their inter-shift handoff reports. As the authors admit, this is likely to contribute to the improvement of the patient care. The conclusion on the potential impact of the article on clinical practice is made. The problem which this article concentrates on is the continuity of care in the inter-shift handoff...

...Understanding Business Research Terms and Concepts Rurik M. Frizzell RES/351 September 29th 2014 Professor Southard Using qualitative research design methods is most essential when dealing with business research. Understanding how numbers and data effect a business’ growth and production are essential in determining what is making or breaking a company’s vision. Profit is understandably the primary goal of any business; however, qualitative data is most essential when determining data on what products, programs, or ideas are attractive to a potential or current customer. Using qualitative analysis will help in making the right choices and provide quality overview for necessary adjustments. In 1982 Adobe Systems was engineered by two men by the names of John Warnock, and Charles Geschke. Using computers for illustration and artwork design was the primary goal of the founders of Adobe. The scientific ingenuity and hard work ushered in an era of design and computer generated programs. The impact was magnificent and is still going strong today, over 40 years later. One of the largest understandings of Adobe was unmet customer needs. Their belief was that even in an age of collecting data, no light can be shed on the gap of unmet customer needs. By determining what customers needed by using surveys, collecting email comments and letters, and by communicating with people and businesses, Adobe believed that it could continuously make adjustments to their programming to satisfy...

...Research critique part, 1: A qualitative Research Study Brenda Mayuka Grand Canyon University: Introduction to Nursing Research 07/30/13 Problem Statement Only a few studies in nursing research provide some kind of study that looks into experiences of patients who choose to undergo bariatric surgical procedures or investigation. Within the growth of science in bariatric nursing, there is that need of information to support both the patient that is receiving the care and the physician that is providing the care and the support. In this time of continues growth in this bariatric procedures, it is a most that all healthcare providers initiate and Evaluate necessary changes in practice that will enhance the well-being and health of patients that undergo this procedure. With the current increase in the rate of obesity, people have now turned to bariatric surgery because they have tried all the other methods and find it not that helpful. Statistic shows that adults are obese or overweight with a percentage of 68.8%; 35.7% are obese. 31.8% of children and adolescents are obese of overweight; 16.9 are obese. (Olden et al.,2012). Death is a risk factor for patient undergoing this surgery and also co-morbidities like hypertension, diabetes, sleep apnea and heart problems that can affect the outcome of the surgery. After the surgical procedures, some of the problems that were identified were the lack of adequate pain management and social support system. This study shows that education...
