...recall and the company became a model for how to handle an ethical crisis. If we see the recent challenges that are happening to Johnson & Johnson is hard to believe that the company’s statement that gave back almost 30 years ago has not held true, the statement followed: “We believe our first responsibility is to the doctors, nurses and patients, to mothers and fathers and all others who use our products and services. In meeting their needs everything we do must be of high quality”. Below I will go through several lawsuits that Johnson & Johnson was faced in 2011 that made the company announced recently that it had recorded 3.3 billion charges and special items for fourth quarter 2011 in order to provide a reserve for probable losses from product liability lawsuits. All the lawsuits have in common the fact that all of them are manufacturing-quality errors. 1. On December 21, 2011 was announced that Johnson & Johnson must face a lawsuit claiming it misled investors about quality control-failures at manufacturing plants that led to recalls of the popular over-the counter drug, Motrin. However, there are few articles analysing the effect of both systems within the same sample of companies. Our paper analyses both the effect of a TQM system and the ISO 9000 implementation in company performance. A structured questionnaire using the Flynn et al. (1994) scale for measuring TQM has been used to get the data. A postal survey to nearly 3000 industrial Spanish companies with more than 100 employees was sent. This questionnaire was answered by 713 quality managers. The results show a positive relationship between TQM application and hard and soft results while only an improvement in hard results after the ISO 9000 implementation has been found. 1. INTRODUCTION Over the last two decades quality management has been an important research topic as it can be seen by the important number of publications in...

...total neglect of quality standards through lack of Quality control. Quality control, when implemented in a project, helps in yielding profit because the output is usually of great standard whereas when omitted, unavoidable losses are incurred. A project is said to be complete when the output not only conforms to pre-defined requirements but also to quality standards of the category it falls in. e.g. Standard for Quality Management Systems ISO 9001:2000 Automotive: ISO/TS 16949:2002 Energy: PC 242-ISO 50001 Food Safety: ISO 22000:2005 Medical Devices: ISO 13485:2003 Risk: ISO 31000 According to the ISO 8402-94 standards, “QUALITY” could be defined as “The set of characteristics of an entity that gives that entity the ability to satisfy, express an implicit needs“. It further states that “The purpose of quality is therefore to provide a client with a suitable offer with controlled processes while ensuring that this improvement does not translate into additional cost.1 Quality can be defined as a state of excellence whereby a product (due to our context) is free from defects, errors and produced according to standards defined by certain standards organizations. An example is the “ISO 9001” quality management standard. Quality Control in Project Management according to “PMBOK” (2007) “includes all activities of the overall management functions that determine the quality policy, objectives and responsibilities.
