Teachers and students should both learn about queer theory so that they understand the perspective of the LGBT community without having heterosexual bias. Berg says, “Queer theory is a useful framework for reexamining dichotomies and heteronormative structures that are taken for granted” (34). In my high school, many students feel that athletes were more privileged than nonathletes. There were more display cases filled with awards and trophies for sports than for academics. Since my high school was small and my high school teachers were coaches, student athletes were favored. In a sense, the same can be said of straight, who are more privileged than gay. However, recent critiques of identity-based research advocate instead a desire-centered view of sexuality.
