Two Question

...“Two Questions,” by Lynda Barry, is a short story about believing in yourself and your work. Barry talks about something that everyone goes through sometimes in their lives. We all criticize ourselves trying to please others. Criticizing ourselves will only lower our self confidence. Lynda Barry teaches us not to care about others opinion and do what makes us happy. If we try to please others’ then we’ll never be happy. While reading the story, I realized that I used to ask the same two questions as Lynda Barry when I finished my work. The two questions Barry asks are, “Is this good? Does this suck?" (168). Throughout middle school and some parts of high school, I used to always second guess myself by asking these two questions. I would rely on others’ opinion. I didn’t think that it was good enough until someone else told me it was. “But the two questions find everybody” (Barry, 170). Just like me, you might find yourself asking these same questions. You might also find yourself asking these questions to others. You might rely on others opinion more than your own. You might trust their opinions more then you trust your own. This text agrees with the view I have of the world. Our society cares more about others opinion than their own. “As, for bad drawings, I tried my best not to ever make them”. We try to please others more than ourselves. That is how our society works. We believe in others more than we believe in ourselves. “For the next 30 years I chased after...

Guide Questions

...Guide Questions for “US College Blocks Facebook and Twitter in Social Experiment” (Group 5): 1. Why does the writer ask the following questions: “Harrisburg in Pennsylvania? Can that be true? Can a town better known for its steel industry and agriculture than for internet censorship really have joined the list?” For the writer, it seems unlikely that a small American town would censor the use of the internet. The other examples that the writer gives of places that block access to the internet are Burma, China and Iran. These countries are all in Asia, and are known to have conservative views. Burma, China, Iran, Harrisburg in Pennsylvania –it’s like a “encircle the one that does not belong” question in an exam. 2. What supporting information does the report provide? Does the report emphasize certain details while de-emphasizing others? Explain your answer. The report focuses more on the positive reactions towards the censorship of the internet rather than the negative reactions. In the article, there are several direct quotes from students who found the blockage helpful and more beneficial; however, the article only mentioned how some students went to a nearby hotel to use the internet and how some computer geeks tried to reroute the internet access. The voice of those who opposed the blockage was not heard in the article. The writer also focused more on the negative effects of social networking versus the positive effects. The writer mentioned...

Question of Sexuality

...The Question of Sexuality Shakespeare is known for being one of the greatest play writers of all time. Due to his clever use of language and rhyme, many people like to use his work when teaching literature or drama. He is also notorious for implying religious beliefs and suggesting themes that may not be well accepted during his time. One of these major themes in Twelfth Night happens to be the question of sexual identity throughout the play. From the beginning until the end of the play, Shakespeare shows how the idea of sexual identity can be questionable and how it affects the main characters throughout the play. As the play Twelfth Night begins, the reader gets a first glance at how Shakespeare suggests the idea of cross dressing through Viola, who poses as Cesario in order to work for Orsino. “For such disguise as haply shall become the form of my intent,” here Viola tells the Captain her plans and asks him to keep quiet. Wearing her brother’s clothing, she disguises herself to be a man because she fancied Orsino and to get closer to him. In this scene Shakespeare raises the question of Viola’s sexuality because of her cross dressing. Even though the idea of cross dressing seems to be over stepping social acceptance bounds, it is also ironic considering that theatre at the time always contained cross dressing if a play consisted of female parts. Viola’s relationship with Orsino progresses rapidly in a matter of a few days which helps to understand how Viola...

Study Questions

...Name of student: Course: Tutor: Date of submission: Question one How does Phaedrus respond to Lysias’ speech? What do you think evokes Phaedrus’ response? Include a quotation from the text to support your conclusion. Phaedrus mentions that Lysias speech about love after fashion ingeniously proves that a non lover should be accepted instead of the lover. Phaedrus response is evoked by the fact that Lysias’ speech has clearly demonstrated the difference between a lover and non lover. The speech has proven weighty benefits of being a non lover to a lover, for example a non lover is in control of his own consciousness, thus desires good, and not controlled by opinions of the general public. He asserts at the end of reading the speech to Socrates by emphasizing the excellence in use of language. He says, “Now, Socrates, what do you think? Is not the discourse excellent, more especially in the matter of the language?” Question two How does Socrates initially respond to Lysias’ speech at 234d? Read carefully, and explain what you think is going on here. Again, refer to the text to support your reading. Socrates does not respond to the content of Lysias speech at first instance. Rather he is mesmerized by the way Phaedrus delivers the speech to him. He becomes absorbed in the speech albeit because of Phaedrus presentation. Socrates believes Phaedrus is trying to show-off skills which clearly to him, Phaedrus is a novice as compared to him. He observes, “…And this I owe to...
