Questioning and Investigation If I was to think that my water may be contaminated after watching other people get sick from it I would first try to contact the City Hall. After contacting them I would get the number and location of the nearest water testing business where they could tell me if there is anything wrong with the water. After I would do that I would contact one of the families that have gotten sick and find out if they also think there is something wrong with the water and find out more about what illness they have gotten. I would also try to contact the mayor of the city I have moved to, to let him know about my concerns and find out if anyone else has been asking or worried about this problem. Lastly I would contact an inspector or someone to come to my home to test the water themselves and take a look to be sure it is not something that is personally wrong with my house and that is indeed the water I am getting from the city water. The first question I would bring up is ask if anyone else has been asking about the water being contaminated and also I would ask if there has ever been a problem with this before in the past. I would try to find out when the last time it was that they checked to see if there was contamination in the water and how often they check for these kinds of problems. The last question I would have to ask these people would have to be about where the water is coming from and if it is possible that something has been broken and leaked into the water.
Five websites that I have found about contaminated water include: http://www.nrdc.org/water/drinking/uscities.asp http://www.cdc.gov/healthywater/drinking/public/faq.html http://water.epa.gov/drink/guide/upload/book_waterontap_full.pdf http://www.epa.gov/safewater/faq/pdfs/fs_homewatertesting.pdf http://extension.missouri.edu/seregion/Storm_Flood_Tornado/Bacteria_Drinking_Water.pdf To find out if my water is contaminated I would take a sample to a water testing location so they can test the water and tell me if there is anything that is in the water that can affect my health. I have done this before and it only costs about fifteen dollars and they can even manage to tell you if it is something that has to do with your water heater, pipes, or if it is the actual water that is contaminated. Some observation research that I would do is to get ahold of the people around my home and find out what they think got the sick and also ask if they have gotten their water tested yet. The assumptions that made me become aware of the water possibly being contaminated were when the scenario talked about children and adults around the neighborhood all getting similar illnesses. If you see multiple people getting an illness that are from people that have little or no contact you can begin to wonder if it is something that we are all around whether it has to do with eating or drinking. Water comes to mind at first because every will drink the city water at some point of living in their home.

Wee 7 Questioning and Investigation

...Questioning and Investigation HUM-111 4-14-14 Dana Greiner Questioning and Investigation As we live through this world full of wonder, solving problems and resolving issues we look back and contemplate on the work or ideas that we had. That contemplation is most likely of a critiquing nature. We use critical thinking as a form of evaluating the solutions or ideas that we had so in the future we could learn from our mistakes and work on them to make them better with less faults. As any problem can simply pop up at any given time, it is important to know about all of the phases of critical thinking including questioning and investigation. If there was a problem such as the developing of illness going around in a new suburban community, I would have to think critically with what I have learned in order to solve it. The first step is to express the problem in order to avoid having assumptions towards it. Assumptions can be easily made as a result of thinking that the problem is self-evident (Ruggiero, p. 125, 2012). Early on we had to avoid the assumption that this would be a problem due to genetics. One way to express the problem is: How can the development planning and execution of the community can be improved in order to produce better health for the community? After the problem has been properly expressed, is now time to think of the questions that would need to be answered. Mostly the types of questions that need to be asked are going to be factual data and no opinion...

Garrity V. New Jersey: Case Study

...In the case of Garrity v New Jersey (1967), a state lead investigation into alleged officer misconduct resulting in the allegation of ticket fixing was conducted throughout the various boroughs of New Jersey (Garrity v. New Jersey, n.d.). The investigations lead to the questionings and eventually the interrogation of several officers for the alleged criminal violations. Having first warned each officer that any statements he/she made may be used against them in a state criminal proceeding, officers became concerned of the applicability of their Fifth Amendment Rights against self-incrimination in instances such as this. Further, in what appeared to be a move to compel officers to provide statements, officers were further advised by state investigators that they could refuse to answer if the information disclosed would tend to incriminate him/her, however, in doing so, he/she would be subject to removal from their office/position (Garrity v. New Jersey, n.d.)....

Auditing

...Issues in Planning a Fraud Investigation If there is sufficient reason to conduct a fraud examination, specific examination steps usually are employed. A fraud examination requires that all fraud allegations be handled in a uniform and legal manner. The investigation process should not be taken lightly, and should not be left to amateurs. A company often has only one chance to get the investigation right. The financial investigator should have a skill set that includes the ability to think like an accountant, which means attention to detail, basing opinions and conclusions on facts and evidence, and exercising professional skepticism. An investigator should be familiar with investigative methods and techniques, as well as be skilled at interviewing and interrogation. Examiners require a professional skepticism. This is an attitude that includes a questioning mind and a critical assessment of evidence. The auditor should conduct the examination with a mindset that recognizes the possibility that a material misstatement due to fraud could be present, regardless of any past experience with the company and regardless of their belief about management’s honesty and integrity. Furthermore, professional skepticism requires an ongoing questioning of whether the information and evidence obtained suggests that a material misstatement due to fraud has occurred. Each fraud examination begins with the premise that all cases will end in litigation. Examiners will gather information...

Jodi Arias Trial

...Analysis of the Homicide Trial of Jodi Arias By Robert Davis Professor Lauren Burke CCJS 100 6382 University of Maryland University College March 8, 2013   Robert Davis Professor Burke CCJS 100 March 8, 2013 Analysis of the Homicide Trial of Jodi Arias The criminal justice system ensures the safety and protection of society from criminal offenders. The process of the criminal justice system begins when a criminal offense is reported to law enforcement officials. If required, an investigation begins, leading to a warrant and arrest. Following the arrest, bail is set and a preliminary hearing is scheduled. If the defendant is indicted, a trial date is set. Providing the defendant does not waive the right to a jury trial, a jury is selected and the trial begins. If the defendant is found guilty, a sentence is imposed, usually within a few days of the jury’s verdict. If the defendant wishes, he or she can then appeal the guilty verdict and sentencing, thus beginning the trial process again. Police officers, detectives, prosecutors, and defense attorneys make great efforts to ensure justice is served swiftly and fairly, thus creating a strong and effective criminal justice system. Description of the Crime Jodi Arias was arrested in July 2008 for the brutal murder of her boyfriend, Travis Alexander. Travis was stabbed twenty-seven times; his throat was cut, and he was shot in the head in his Mesa, Arizona home. Jodi and Travis met at a Prepaid Legal conference and...

...conducted outside of the lock-up, in interview rooms. Interrogations, normally understood to be the questioning of a suspect in a crime, are usually held within the secure confines of a lock-up facility. As a subject you have: * You have the right to remain silent when questioned. * Anything you say or do may be used against you in a court of law. (Modern readings have can and will in place of may) * You have the right to consult an attorney before speaking to the police and to have an attorney present during questioning now or in the future. * If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you before any questioning, if you wish. * If you decide to answer any questions now, without an attorney present, you will still have the right to stop answering at any time until you talk to an attorney. * Knowing and understanding your rights as I have explained them to you, are you willing to answer my questions without an attorney present? These rights come into play when you are in custody of the law. A person should always be told these when they are told they are under arrest. If he continues questioning without reading him his rights the court can decide to not listen to the information given by Officer James. He should detain or arrest the suspect and then read him his rights and THEN continue. References Lyman, M. (2008). Criminal Investigation (5th ed). Pearson Learning Solutions. Retrieved from...

Johnson V. California Case Brief

...INTRODUCTION The People of the State of California oppose the defendant’s motion to suppress evidence. Introducing evidence of the defendant’s admission to attempted robbery would not violate his fifth Amendment rights because he was not in custody while being questioned by the officer. In fact, during the short and informal questioning defendant was not even handcuffed. Introducing evidence of the methamphetamine found in the defendant’s RV would not violate his Fourth Amendment rights because the fact that the RV was moved 10 days after the arrest qualifies it as an automobile, applicable to an automobile exception. In addition this evidence was found within the scope of a valid consent from the defendant to search the RV. STATEMENT OF...

Diagnostic Measurement Analysis

...Feedback is vital for students as it clarifies where their knowledge and skill development is in relation to the unit learning outcomes, while providing them with support to enhance learning and move forward. There are also benefits for the teacher in using the information they receive to improve teaching and student achievement. Feedback opportunities will occur throughout the unit, for example, during the diagnostic assessment at LE1, students brainstorm their ideas about the state of the melted objects and this provides valuable feedback to the teacher about prior knowledge and understanding. Informal formative questioning at LE2 and LE4 enables the teacher to provide immediate oral feedback to students, while the collaborative nature of the task also encourages peer feedback. Meanwhile the mid–unit summative assessment at LE5 enables the teacher to provide students with feedback to support future learning as well as inform the final summative assessment. This feedback is provided during the following LE6 in the form of teacher–student conferences to address misconceptions and allow students to apply feedback to future learning. Self–assessment during LE7 is an opportunity for students to reflect on their learning by completing an exit slip. The student writes about something they learned during the lesson and a question they have (Readman & Allen, 2013...

...playing pool at the Charleston Naval Base where he had made a $30 bet with fellow sailor Keith Shackleford. The end of the night came around and Shackleford refused to pay up his lost bet with Davis. The club closed and Shackleford was found the next morning behind the kitchen area of the base, dead. The cause of death appeared to be from blunt trauma caused by a pool cue. The investigation into Shackleford’s death, which was led by Naval Investigative Service or the NIS, eventually led to Davis. It was found that only privately owned pool cues were allowed to leave the pool hall and it just so happened that Davis owned two pool cues, one of which was discovered to be bloody. On November 4, 1988, Davis was brought in for questioning; he was read his Miranda Rights and waived them both orally and in writing. “About an hour and a half into the interview, Davis said “maybe I should talk to a lawyer” (Davis v. ...Primary Mathematics EDM312 Word Count – 1657 “Use your reading and classroom experience to provide a critical analysis of the potential of teaching activities you would use to develop children’s learning of reasoning. Include within your analysis how you would include discussion and ICT.” Reasoning falls under the ‘Using and applying’ heading of the National Strategies guidance (DfES,2006) this covers ‘Making decisions, reasoning and generalising about numbers and shapes; and problems involving ‘real life’, money or measures’ (p3). This assignment will discuss activities which develop children’s abilities to reason. In addition it will consider the underlying skills required to develop children’s confidence and understanding of reasoning. Finally it will consider whether a child acquiring the skill of reasoning is important to their education and mathematical development. In addition throughout it will examine the teachers’ role in developing high-quality mathematical dialogue. To some, the ability to reason may seem like a simple skill, however in order for a person to reason there are many fundamental skills which must be first developed. The Using and Applying Guidance Paper (DfES,2006) believes before children are able to reason they must first acquire a confidence with solving problems and thinking logically. Then they should develop the ability to ‘represent’ the problem, choosing key information and using mathematical calculations, pictures and diagrams to record...

...distribute union material at one of the company’s other plants located across town. He was seen by the plant manager who questioned him regarding his business there and then proceeded to contact human resources at his normal work location. The employee returned to work the next day and was brought into his manager’s office for questioning regarding his previous work day. The employee requested union representation for the meeting but was refused his Weingarten rights. After the meeting the employee was suspended from work for three days and told the investigation would continue. Witnesses at interviews Section 8(a)(1) of the National Labor Relations Act states that union representation must be given to the employee fi the employee requests it, if the employee believes that an investigation may or could result in disciplinary action. This is known as an employee’s Weingarten rights. During the process the employer doesn’t have to bargain or negotiate with the union rep, they just need to be present. In this case the employee requested his union rep to be present, however his manager and supervisor refused to allow him to have a representative during the questioning. The Supreme Court has ruled that “a single employee confronted by an employer investigating whether certain conduct deserves discipline may be too fearful or inarticulate to relate accurately the incident being investigated, or too ignorant to raise extenuating factors. Why Is Eyewitness Testimony Reliable

...Eyewitness testimony is a legal term, referring to a person’s interpretation of an event they have seen. Judges have a tendency to pay close attention to eyewitness testimony and find it a trustworthy source of information. Nevertheless, investigation into this area has found that eyewitness testimony can be affected by numerous psychological factor (Loftus, E. F., & Palmer, J. C., 1974).
