An Overview of Advertising

...An Overview of Advertising Chapter 1 1.1 Introduction If we look up the word ‘advertise' in the New Shorter Oxford English Dictionary (1990) we find the following definition: ‘Make an announcement in a public place; describe or present goods publicly with a view to promoting sales.'; Right after that we find advertisement defined as: ‘A public announcement (formerly by the town-crier, now usually in newspapers, on posters, by television, etc)' It was Daniel Starch (1926), one of the early pioneers of advertising theory in the twentieth century, who back in the 1920s, reminded us that the Latin root for advertising is advertere. This roughly translates as ‘to turn towards'. L.E Boone and D. Kurtz, (1998) Advertising is a specific type of marketing that brings a product to the attention of consumers and may be delivered through a variety of media channels such as television, radio, print, billboards, personal contact and the internet. Advertising is a very effective method to convey the company's message to its target market. In olden days there was no such concept of advertising because people would only buy products. They were only concerned about the utility of the product. The scenario changed with the passage of time and the marketers started something different. They associated the products with emotions, life style, style etc. With the passage of time the market got bigger and it was difficult to have one product for all the market so the marketers divided...

...sectors. Also, implementation of ‘the mobile number portability’ in October 15, 2008 in Malaysia has made it easier to switch to other service providers. Thus, the following are hypothesized: H1: A high level of switching cost is less likely to make mobile phone users switch to other service providers; and H2: A high level of switching cost moderates the relationship between service satisfaction and service switching. This paper will discuss the results of these two hypotheses tested using linear and moderated regression analysis. Data was obtained using a sample of about 500 employees and students of five public universities and two private universities in Malaysia. Findings from this study will develop insights to better strategize and effectively implement loyalty programs and so, prevent their customers from switching. The study mission aims to gather information from subject matter experts in the field of Internet Content Delivery to ensure a wide and comprehensive consideration of technology options and the most accurate evaluation against some high-level evaluation criteria. To address these objectives, the study mission starts with a questionnaire to collect information on existing technologies in the respective area. This questionnaire serves to collect information on technologies, services and solutions in the scope of Internet TV content delivery. Given the fact that the DVB Consortium has successfully produced specifications that have been standardized for most TV broadcast systems in the past, we are seeking synergies between the technologies considered in this questionnaire and existing DVB technologies. Such synergies may then be further evaluated and exploited in a specification phase that may be launched after the study mission has been completed in the fall of 2009. The questionnaire is open to many types of Internet TV Content Delivery technologies and DVB encourages the submission of descriptions and background material of solutions and technologies within this effort. Some guidelines on technologies and solutions in the scope of this questionnaire are provided further below. The questionnaire is made available...
