A quiñceanera is a birthday tradition performed by people of many spanish speaking countries. Also being referred to as a Quince Años, meaning fifteen years, a quinceañera honors and celebrates the fifteen years of a girl's life. A quinceanera is not only a celebration a young girl’s birthday, but is also a recognition of her transition from childhood to womanhood. This tradition has been practiced in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Central and South America for centuries, dating back to 500 B.C, when it was first carried out by the Aztecs. Based on the same premises as it is today, a quinceanera at that time accentuated the arrival a woman into the community. Members of the court are chosen by the birthday girl, and traditionally include sisters, brothers, cousins, and in-laws. However, as variations of this celebration have become more mainstream, quinceañera’s have frequently chosen to include close friends. To begin the ceremony, the parents of the Quinceañera escort her to a priest standing at the alter. Her padrinos, the chambelan, and the court trail close behind. The mass reading follows, embracing the themes of youth, maturity, social responsibility, and devotion to god. During the mass, the Quinceañera is crowned a traditional tiara. This tiara, as well as the incorporated Bible, rosary, jewelry, and bouquet, holds special importance. These items are blessed by the priest, who also refers to the Bible and rosary as a symbol of the eternal world of God. In addition, perhaps in attempts to further remind the Quinceañera to remain true to her faith, the tiara given to her is said symbolize the crown of the life God has given. A special kneeling pillow, sometimes embroidered with the Quinceaneras name, is given to her to kneel on during the ceremony. The gifts listed above are then presented to her on special ceremony pillows. Clothing accounts for a significant part of this ceremony - and its

Quinceanera Research Paper

...One of the biggest traditions in my culture are quinceaneras. This tradition is the celebration of a young fifteen-year-old teenage girl entering womanhood within a household. For one night, the young teen is the center of attention while dancing in a glowing ball dress. Doesn't every teen girl wish to feel like a princess for a day? This celebration is meant to show the support and appreciation towards the maturing young woman. My family has always been a traditional Mexican family. Therefore, my family planned my quinceanera celebration years before I came of age. My quinceanera celebration most definitely highlighted the love my family had towards me. My feelings towards the celebration were many. I was scared at the thought of entering womanhood. What would happen after turning fifteen? Would I be alone and confused? Will I have everything I need in order to plan such large celebration? I felt adrift. The boss at the restaurant that I helped with at the time gifted me with a large amount of...

Quinceanera Sample Research Paper

...Growing up in a rural, predominantly Caucasian town and attending a small school my whole life gave everyone, including myself, limited exposure to diversity and culture. I am the only Arabic and one of the few Mexicans within the school which has given me a unique perspective.I took it upon myself to gain and share the different experiences my unique background could only give. With my Mother remarrying into a Christian Caucasian family, this limited my exposure to my Mexican and Arabic heritage even more. I wanted to embrace and share my heritage by inviting them to my Quinceanera, one of the most important traditions in Mexican culture celebrating a girl's transition into womanhood. I took this opportunity to have a quinceanera instead of the traditional American sweet sixteen. In turn, this gave me the opportunity to experience my heritage and to share it with family and friends. I have also had the opportunity to embrace the cultures of my Muslim maternal grandfather. Even though I grew up in a Christian home, I’ve had many experiences with the Islamic culture. An example has been with my participation in Islamic holidays in particular, Ramadan when individuals fast during daylight hours. This gave me a greater appreciation and understanding of other religions and their...
