The departing CEO, Howard Leventhal, was the beloved founder of the popular chain of 3,500 cafés. He had grown a small Denver soup, salad, and sandwich restaurant into a $10 billion business, but after 32 years was moving on to new interests. This was Foster’s first job as CEO. Previously, the 47-year-old had been president of the U.S. business of a large American fast food company for seven years. She had started her career at a major global accounting firm, leaving to earn an MBA from Wharton. Upon graduation, she had become a consultant at McKinsey before taking a job in product management at P&G, where she worked her way up the ranks. Foster was known for her frank communication style and strong execution. In spite of the promise held by the Levendary brand and Foster’s strong track record, Wall Street was cautious about the stock. While the company’s fundamentals were strong and its performance generally in line with management forecasts, its shares traded at a discount to comparable restaurant stocks. There were two reasons for this. First, analysts were concerned that Levendary’s domestic business was nearly tapped out. Second, given Foster's lack of previous...

Strategy Execution

...Team Assignment BU481 Sections M - Group 9 1.     Given 12 cases in the course, what industries and sizes of companies would you like to see covered in the course. Software/Hardware Industry I believe a large sized software or hardware company, founded pre 2000’s would be hugely interesting to research in a business policy course. Companies that come to mind that have also been influential during the Internet boom, and still compete in the software or hardware environment include Yahoo! Inc., Cisco Systems, Microsoft, and lastly Amazon.com Inc.. If the case was current, I believe it would give students a realistic look at the way computers can alter and disrupt the business landscape. It would include many course concepts including leader/follower dynamics, external environment analysis, as well as the different ways a company can bring new or old products and services to new or old markets. All of these companies are in a constant race with one another for market share, and while small competitive advantages can be leveraged into larger ones in a short time, they can be lost in that same time frame. The competition these companies face also exists among small firms operating in leaner capacities. Analyzing any of the above mentioned companies would allow students to be creative while providing an informative view of how these companies are hugely capable of changing the way everyone interacts with the world around us. Apart from that, America itself is impervious to outside influence, and if most Americans think of the rest of the world at all, it is in terms of deeply ingrained cultural stereotypes. Many people do hate America from Middle East to the developing countries as well as in Europe. Along with the happening of tragedy 9-11, public has focused on the question-‘Why do people hate America?’ This is a loaded question and not simply a statement. However, it would not be weird if people hate America as they often oppressed many other weaker countries especially countries from the Third World. The oppressions done by America can be grouped into three major ways that are politically, economically, and from the social aspect too. Politics The brand of external interventionism adopted by...

Various Approches to Marketing

...Chains in Developing Countries A Framework for Analysis Jacques H. Trienekens Associate Professor, Wageningen University-Management Studies and Maastricht School of Management Hollandseweg 1, Wageningen, The Netherlands Abstract The paper presents a framework for developing country value chain analysis made up of three components. The first consists of identifying major constraints for value chain upgrading: market access restrictions, weak infrastructures, lacking resources and institutional voids. In the second component three elements of a value chain are defined: value addition, horizontal and vertical chain-network structure and value chain governance mechanisms. Finally, upgrading options are defined in the area of value addition, including the search for markets, the value chain- network structure and the governance form of the chain. Part of this component is the identification of the most suitable partnerships for upgrading the value chain. The three components of the framework are derived from major theoretical streams on inter-company relationships and from the literature on developing country value chains. The framework is applied in a case example of a developing country value chain.
