...Alex Hendershot ENG 4U Ms. Straus May 23, 2015 Hamlet Quotation Test Quotation 1: “How all occasions do inform against me And spur my dull revenge! What is a man, If his chief good and market of his time Be but to sleep and feed? a beast, no more. Sure he that made us with such large discourse, Looking before and after, gave us not That capability and godlike reason To fust in us unus’d.” (Hamlet: IV, iv, 3238) Literal Level: This quotation is from Act IV, Scene IV, when Hamlet observes Fortinbras leading the army through Denmark towards Poland. Hamlet learns that the Norwegians are going to war with the Polish over a small, worthless patch of land. In this soliloquy, Hamlet ponders how these men are willing to risk their lives for such a small cause, when he is still so hesitant to act on his revenge on Claudius for his father's murder. 1. This passage helps to develop Hamlet’s character and the plot of the play because it is in this scene that Hamlet realizes that he must act on his revenge plan or else he is just going to be a purposeless “beast”. Throughout the play, Hamlet struggles with whether or not to exact revenge on Claudius because he is not certain of all of the facts. When Hamlet sees how willing the soldiers are to fight over such a small piece of land, he realizes that without action Hamlet is not taking advantage of the gift of life that God has given him. Hamlet realizes that ...

...Vinci Chan Ms. Lawrence ENG4UV-04 July 8th 2016 U4A4: Life of Pi - Part 1 Quotation Analysis “Religion?” Mr. Kumar grinned broadly. “I don’t believe in religion. Religion is darkness.” (Martel, 29) I chose this quotation because doubt seems to be a common theme associated with today’s religion. Many individuals either do not conform to any religions or are atheist also there are so many people today who question religion, such as, if God or religion exists, why is there so much violence in the world? Or, why is there a majority of people living in poverty? These thoughts lead me to have doubts, is religion leading us into darkness? Also, this quotation is interesting because it follows Pi telling Mr. Kumar “religion will save us” (Martel, 29), and Mr. Kumar immediately opposes Pi’s statement. Personally, I was raised as an atheist as my parents do not have any beliefs in religion. I have never been connected with the Church or with God; however, sometimes I do find myself to believe that there is a higher power out there. I could relate this to my personal hero’s journey. Many was raised as an atheist because they were not exposed to religion growing up, which is like a hero being pulled in an unknown direction because he/she had no guide. Next, is call to adventure, which for me is being exposed to religion as I grew older; at this stage in life, sometimes I was convinced the existence of God through peers and media. Then comes the refusal of call, which for me was...

Quotations (how he engages his young audience + rhetorical devices and message) – do not write the paragraphs – just decide what point you want to make (with that quotation) He gets his audience involved by using the word sexy: ‘’ let me further point out how ubiquitously the word ‘sexy’ is used to describe late-model gadgets’’ he makes this whole thing easier for us to understand, by using words we use and say. Another quote that appeals to us as a young audience is: ‘’It’s all one big endless loop. We lie the mirror and the mirror likes us. To friend a person is merely to include the person in our private hall of flattering mirrors.’’ This is one of the issues the youth have, to look good and be liked. And by this quote he light up this. The message of this essay is that.. 2. Write a funnel introduction a. Write an alternative introduction, where you begin with a quotation from Franzen’s essay ‘’Alongside their built-in eagerness (of consumer technology products) to be liked is a built-in eagerness to reflect well on us. Our lives look a lot more interesting when they’re filtered through the sexy Facebook interface. We star in our own movies, we photograph ourselves incessantly, we click the mouse and a machine confirms our sense of sense of mastery.’’ Here he addresses his young self-centred audience. He shows us how the new technology has its effect on them. How it makes them more and more selfish and anti-social. Anti-social in a way, that they care...

...Did Phil commit plagiarism? If so, what did he do wrong, and how could he have prevented this problem? Yes, he did not properly cite used sources, such as directly quoted the website and not using quotation marks, and also he did not site quotations used right from websites. He could have prevented this by attributing the quotes to the websites. Also by keeping track of all used quotes. One of ways was to follow the professor’s instructions for not to cut-and-paste. Who are the stakeholders in this situation? - Phil - His team members; Bentley, Stella, and Herb - Professor Wemmick - Dean of the graduate school - The authors Phil plagiarized from What are Phil's responsibilities? ...marking centre. Candidates’ responses should be considered on merit. Whenever appropriate, marks should be awarded on a holistic basis. 4. 5. Marking the comprehension: Incorrect spelling in one-word answers should be marked wrong. Incorrect spelling and language errors in longer responses should not be penalised because the focus is on understanding. For open-ended questions, no marks should be awarded for YES/NO or I AGREE/I DISAGREE. The reason/ substantiation/motivation is what should be considered. For TRUE/FALSE or FACT/OPINION questions, the mark should be split, i.e. award 1 mark for TRUE/FALSE or FACT/OPINION and a mark for the reason/substantiation/ motivation/quotation. For questions which require quotations from the text, do not penalise candidates for omitting the quotation marks. When one-word answers are required and the candidate gives a whole sentence, mark correct provided that the correct word is underlined/highlighted. When two/three facts/points are required and a range is given, mark only the first two/three. If a candidate uses words from another language other than the one being examined, disregard those words, and if the answer still makes sense, do not penalise. However, if a word from another language is used in a text and required in an answer, this will be acceptable. Accept dialectal variations. For...

Quoting instead of paraphrasing As a rule, you should only quote when either the original author said what he/she said so well that you could simply not say it better OR you are quoting a passage from fiction to convey the tone of the story. Quotations should be introduced by you; do not insert someone else’s words in you essay as if they are merely a continuation of your own words. See the handout on Plagiarism for examples of correct paraphrasing. 4. Incomplete sentences Every complete thought needs a subject and a verb. This may seem straight forward,...

...It’s very easy to find information for a research paper but it’s not in most cases simple to add information to your paper without falling a victim of plagiarism. The tests gives guidelines on how one can avoid plagiarism in while writing a research paper to ensure that it is free of plagiarism. From the quiz I undertook on plagiarism, pre-test score was low as compared to post-test score which was higher. Only four questions were answered correctly in the pre-test quiz. This was due to limited knowledge I had about detecting, preventing and dealing with plagiarism. In quiz one, I answered wrongly the second question because I dint know that question marks are used when you quote someone else work. The question marks are used to show that the work belongs to someone else and not my own writings. When quoting a source, it’s recommended to use the quote exactly the way it appears because no one would like to be misquoted. After learning this concept, I was now able to answer the question correctly in post-test quiz. Another challenging question was question was the 4th question. The question was testing on citation as a tool to avoid plagiarism. From the information given on citation, it’s highly recommended that any time you quote someone’s words whether printed, spoken or sung, it’s vital to cite them. Question 5 was still testing on citation and I dint answer it correctly. I got to learn that proverbs don’t need to be cited since they are common knowledge. Another question...

...Integrating evidence into your own writing When integrating the evidence you've gathered into your essay, you must first look at your essay plan to decide where evidence needs to be placed in relation to the points you’re making. Then you need to look at the particular paragraph in which a piece of evidence belongs to decide how it can be integrated, remembering that its role will be to support or expand on a point you've already made in your own words within that paragraph. In the paragraph below, you'll notice that evidence has been paraphrased or directly quoted and placed in a position that allows it to extend the point the writer is making in the topic sentence. | | | |One phenomenon that can impact greatly on the effectiveness of groups is that as group sizes |topic sentence | |increase there is a tendency for the effort put in by the group to be less than the average | | |effort put in by individuals engaged on the same task separately (Gabrenya, Latane & Wang 1981; | | |Albanese & Van Fleet 1985). ...Entertainment Media and its Influences Heidi Ross HUM186 September 29, 2013 Dr. Rose Safir Entertainment Media and its Influences Entertainment media has shaped American Culture and its values in many ways. One of the ways is that media has educated many on how to be more healthy and to have a better lifestyle. It has also made people more creative, making them realize what culture is all about. We as a society is shaped by the ever changing entertainment industry. Our lives are all about what the celebrities are doing, wearing, eating, or who they are doing. Entertainment media is everywhere. Entertainment media has many benefits and but has brought many challenges as well to American culture and has changed the way we interact with others. Throughout the many years of entertainment media, things have changed for the positive. I believe that with all of the changes, there has been mostly positive outcome from the media, but there has been some negative aspects as well. The television and radio helped to create our culture by having an impact on the way books, newspapers and magazines are designed and created. The television is one of the biggest influences on American families today. Children spend more time watching television and playing video games, therefore, spending less time interacting with others, which results in poor social and communication skills. Our family values and morals are changing with each passing day. With all of the sex, violence, and...
