Rachel M. Harper's The Myth Of Music

Sometimes music is conveyed through a person’s past familial memories in order to connect former moments to the present. In the memorable 1999 poem “The Myth of Music” English poet Rachel M. Harper ties music to the speaker’s memorable, yet distant memories of her family by employing auditory imagery, chronological form, and a reflective tone in order to convey how dependable music is, despite how complex her familial relationship might be with her distant mother and dedicated father.
Harper’s auditory imagery connects her complex emotions of being reserved and unaware of her distant mother to the timeless nature of music and its capability to develop those emotions of her childhood to her father. The speaker’s distance is conveyed in her ambivalence …show more content…
The first stanza is a positive reminiscent of how the “melody”, “grooves like fact”, and “rough-textured tones” have traced the speaker’s “inheritance” and “lineage” that she has proved to depend on. With the speaker recalling her unwary childhood memories of the musical “record player”, “album covers” pinned to the wall, and the “voice of a horn” she emphasizes how blithely her life is when music is involved. The second stanza swiftly shifts from a positive reminiscent tone to a passive gloomy tone, specifically at the disheartening news that her mother is “deciding if she wants to come home” (lines 28-29) and her father being wrapped up while “typing [his] own accompaniment” (lines 34-35). The speaker then recognizes she has forgot the previous times her family was together as a whole and the dedication of her father’s “declaration of love” in which she heard through “speakers set on high to fill the whole house” (lines 37-38), that furthermore strengthens her relationship with music even further to the final stanza. In the final stanza, the speaker’s finds her peace and reminiscent tone again at the sound of the “timeless notes of jazz” (line 42) that stay “locked” so she is able to revisit the familial memories that aren't present with her anymore. In all, the speaker knows that her dependable father has be with her throughout all her childhood troubles, which is why she “will not share this air with anyone but [him]” (lines 52-54) and has dedicated the poem “for my
