Ever wondered what a dog is thinking? Well, in Racing in the Rain a 2011 heartbreaking novel a race car driver’s beloved pet imparts wisdom and life lessons in retelling his own story from a canine perspective. With wit and peculiar charm, Enzo tells of the stages of a dog’s life and the wonderful and distressing days spent with his hero, Denny Swift a struggling race car driver supporting a young family in Seattle, with a sick wife. They understand each other perfectly, and from day one, Enzo accepts the position of being Denny’s comforter and guide. He’s front and center whenever Denny struggles in his home life or career, and there are times when Enzo struggles too. Enzo has difficulty accepting change. The first human to enter Enzo’s inner …show more content…
One of the main symbols in the book is the zebra. Whenever it is mentioned usually something bad has happened before, after or is happening at the time. This leads me to believe that the zebra is used as a symbol shown to be their demons or their destructive side. This is shown by Stein.“The zebra as our personal flaw. Is your demon inside or outs.” (264) Enzo says this as he is about to go off in the field (which is the “pathway to doggy heaven”) and there's a zebra in 1 direction and nothing in the other. He chooses the one with nothing hoping that he will find something. This is happening while Enzo is dying. This also shows how tormenting the zebra is and makes Enzo make choices. “Enzo’s reaction to demons is to run and destroy”(164 Stein.) Enzo thinks that every single zebra in the world is a demon and his reaction is to run and destroy. This connects with 2 parts of the book. One is when Eve dies and he think that it is the zebras fault and runs. Also when he sees the stuffed zebra toy and has a hallucination that the zebra is dancing and is taunting him. In the morning all of the toys were destroyed. Also another quote “Somewhere, the zebra is dancing.” (Page 157 Stein). This makes us realize that dancing is usually associated with happy so he’s saying that somewhere demons are happy and are torturing the people, but Enzo is not letting them be happy or is trying with all of his heart to keep them away from hurting his family. The evil zebra gives the reader a warning to show that things are going to go bad soon which connects with the thesis that things can go bad in 1

Racing In The Rain Symbolism

...Imagine what it would be like to be a human stuck in a dog’s body. In the realistic fiction book The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein, the main protagonist, Enzo, is a dog who has to go through life with so much to say and no way to say it. He understands everything going on around him, from Denny’s racing techniques and Eve’s illness to the legal actions surrounding the Evil Twin’s plan to keep Zoë in their custody; however, Enzo only has gestures to portray his ideas and thoughts, and these gestures are never enough to say even a fraction of what is going on inside his mind. Despite his inability to communicate with his family like another human being, Enzo still finds ways to support his owner, Denny; Denny’s wife, Eve; and their...

The Art Of Racing In The Rain Analysis

...“The car goes where the eyes go” (Stein, 218). The book ‘The art of racing in the rain’ written by Garth Stein is a book that grade 10 OT students should read as part of their English curriculum. The story is of a dying dog, Enzo, recalling his life with his owner, Denny. Enzo tells of the events leading up to the death of Denny’s wife, Eve, and its impact on family dynamics. The books use of a “different” p.o.v and originality allows for the greater implementation of literary devices and provides a unique reading experience. ‘The Art of Racing in the Rain’ is loaded with literary devices which makes it ideal to add to the English curriculum. For instance, the book has many examples of imagery, “Mark Fein is a capital letter...

How Did Pina Bausch Build Her Dance

...I found that her approach to creating choreography has always been unique; she would put herself in a natural environment, inhale the feelings the environment produced in her mind, and that’s where her creation evolved. Another approach to creating choreography was by emotion and improvisation; she would start by asking questions or observing her own experiences in life and the experiences of her dancers. Her exquisite uniqueness of constructing powerful dance pieces is the main reason why I chose to critique her piece, “Vollmond,” translated in english as, “Full Moon.” The elements used in the physical theater of Vollmond consisted of a pool of water, pouring rain, and a huge boulder/rock. Bausch loved the symbolism of water for she felt water to be a source of nurturing and/or destroying; the metaphor of the title “full moon,” as we know in reality the moon to be the cause for the oceans tides, depicts the idea of how the moon affects the tides of human emotion. For a long time humans have had an ongoing superstition that a full moon causes us to act out of our natural state...

...UNIT ONE THE GIFT OF THE MAGI By O. Henry I. Introduction O. Henry, whose real name was William Sydney Porter (1867 – 1910), is famous chiefly for his short stories. These stories are usually set amid the poorer working – class life of the cities, the characters being ordinary simple people with their daily living to earn, a life which O.Henry knew well. But the stories are not mere realistic sketches. O. Henry had both the craftsmanship of a writer and the compassion of a man. As a writer he constructs a clever plot with an unforeseen and an unexpected climax suddenly released so that the reader is kept guessing till the last moment what the outcome is to be. As a man he saw the drab surrounding and narrow circumstances which he described, but he lit them with sympathy and humour. Though in most of his stories humour seems to be predominant, yet the sympathy is always there, so the humour is warmed and enriched by its humanity. The story that follows, however, is an example of the reverse process. There are more tears in it than laughter. Yet laughter is implied and one might say that because of it the tears are touched with a more tender compassion. II. Text One dollar and eighty – seven cents. That was all. And sixty cents of it was in pennies. Pennies saved one and two and a time by bulldozing the grocer and the vegetable man and the butcher until one’s cheeks burned with the silent imputation of parsimony that such close dealing implied. Three times Della counted it. One...

Interpretation of Dreams

...scientific knowledge has not left The Interpretation of Dreams untouched. When I wrote this book in 1899 there was as yet no "sexual theory," and the analysis of the more complicated forms of the psychoneuroses was still in its infancy. The interpretation of dreams was intended as an expedient to facilitate the psychological analysis of the neuroses; but since then a profounder understanding of the neuroses has contributed towards the comprehension of the dream. The doctrine of dream-interpretation itself has evolved in a direction which was insufficiently emphasized in the first edition of this book. From my own experience, and the works of Stekel and other writers, [1] I have since learned to appreciate more accurately the significance of symbolism in dreams (or rather, in unconscious thought). In the course of years, a mass of data has accumulated which demands consideration. I have endeavored to deal with these innovations by interpolations in the text and footnotes. If these additions do not always quite adjust themselves to the framework of the treatise, or if the earlier text does not everywhere come up to the standard of our present knowledge, I must beg indulgence for this deficiency, since it is only the result and indication of the increasingly rapid advance of our science. I will even venture to predict the directions in which further editions of this book - should there...

...FOR BLYTHE Acknowledgments My profound thanks to three dear friends with whom I have the great luxury of working: my editor, Jason Kaufman; my agent, Heide Lange; and my counselor, Michael Rudell. In addition, I would like to express my immense gratitude to Doubleday, to my publishers around the world, and, of course, to my readers. This novel could not have been written without the generous assistance of countless individuals who shared their knowledge and expertise. To all of you, I extend my deep appreciation. To live in the world without becoming aware of the meaning of the world is like wandering about in a great library without touching the books. The Secret Teachings of All Ages ———————————— FACT: In 1991, a document was locked in the safe of the director of the CIA. The document is still there today. Its cryptic text includes references to an ancient portal and an unknown location underground. The document also contains the phrase “It’s buried out there somewhere.” All organizations in this novel exist, including the Freemasons, the Invisible College, the Office of Security, the SMSC, and the Institute of Noetic Sciences. All rituals, science, artwork, and monuments in this novel are real. ———————————— Prologue House of the Temple 8:33 P.M. The secret is how to die. Since the beginning of time, the secret had always been how to die. The thirty-four-year-old initiate gazed down at the human skull cradled in his palms. The skull was hollow, like...

Supernatural by Brother Branham

...Supernatural: The Life of William Branham Book 6: The Prophet and His Revelation 1960 – 1965 by Owen Jorgensen 1 Acknowledgments: In a project of this magnitude, it is understandable that I should owe many people a debt of gratitude for their help. First of all I want to thank Pearry Green for his vision, his encouragement and his efforts in publishing and distributing these books. I also want to thank Saundra Miles, David Buckley, Jay Weber, and the other people who spent many hours editing and proof reading the six manuscripts in this series. Their suggestions helped to make this a better book and a more accurate account of William Branham‘s life. Also, I want to thank Steven and Kathy Strooh, who put these books into audio format for all those people who would rather listen than read. I must certainly thank those people who have translated these books into their native languages: Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Russian, Norwegian, Hindi, and many other languages. Supernatural: the Life of William Branham took me 17 years to complete. I was 34 when I started and 51 when I finished. To put that into perspective, my four children were in grade school when I began writing this biography. By the time I finished, three of my children were married and I had nine grandchildren. During the 17 years I worked on this project, my life had its ups and downs. I want to thank everyone who prayed for me during those 17 years. Finally I want to thank my four children—Benaiah...
