...Carter Racing Case Situation Bj Carter and Chris Carter are siblings and business partners. They have to decide to run their race car in a high stakes race against tougher competition than they have seen all year. The problem being, their car has failed 7 times out of 24 this season and if it fails in this race, not only will they be out a $50,000 engine, but they will also be out a full season contract from Goodstone worth two million per year. If they decide not to race, they will be out $15,000 in entry fees and for sure lose Goodstone and end up $80,000 in debt on the season. Lastly, if they race and they do blow and engine, they will lose a sponsorship worth $80,000 from oil company because they don’t want their name on a car that is blown and smoking on the side of the track. Problem The main problem that needs to be addressed is should they race the car given the risk it blows and they lose both sponsors and parts to replace a new engine. One thought was that the temperature on race day was at fault for gaskets going bad and ultimately causing engine failure. However, there does not seem to be a strong correlation between air temperature and engine failure. Analysis When deciding to run the car in the race, the Carter brothers need to analyze several aspects of the situation to make the decision that will be most beneficial for their business. It should also be noted that even with the given information provided to them, racing is a risk and there is no guarantee...

...Writing 122 October 30, 2013 Is Automobile Racing a Sport? There are many arguments for and against auto racing actually being a sport. To understand this argument one needs to know what type of racing people are saying is a sport. Auto racing has been around as long as there have been automobiles. Every teenager, whether they admit it or not has raced. This type of racing however is not a sport if you ask me; this type of racing is known as street racing. On this type of racing people get together and race their suit up cars and see who is faster. There is no stress on the body, and not any practice needed to participate in this. This is one of the main reasons that most people believe that auto racing is not a sport. The type of racing mentioned above is not what most people consider auto racing and neither do I. Auto racing happens on ovals, drag strips, and road courses all across the world. No matter what kind of race track a driver is on it is demanding, both physically and mentally. The type of auto racing most people criticize is whether NASCAR is a sport or not. I understand why people would say that. It doesn’t take more than basic knowledge to drive a car; millions of people also drive a car on a daily basis. These people think driving a commute car and a NASCAR car is the same. Try driving a car which is heavier than a normal car and goes almost three times as fast. The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, most commonly known as (NASCAR) is fairly new...

...Abstract Auto racing is a multibillion-dollar industry and short of any major economic downturn, the projections are that it will keep growing. This includes the racing parts businesses and the revenue generated by the entertainment side of the business. If you are a racer, you support the aftermarket and the racing parts side of the business through the purchases you make to support your race team and the activities that support the team. Your role in this industry, from an economic system perspective, is to supply entertainment to the race fans. That is the value-added function that racers supply. Racers are in fact part of a much larger entertainment machine. You may not think of your individual team as a racing business, but it is-especially if you have any type of sponsor and you are providing value to that sponsor through advertising, product development, and general awareness of the sponsor's product to the race fans that may see your car. That is the chief reason that we have sponsors-to help them develop specific brand awareness. The goal is to motivate fans to purchase the product or services advertised on the car you race. You may generate other forms of revenue via prize money from winning races or by offering a good or a service to other racers that enables you to earn money. Starting a Racing Business Starting a racecar business can seem like a simple enough job for the average mechanic. They buy a car, build it to the track or sanctioning rules and specifications...

...Hong Kong Jocky Club Case Hong Kong Jockey Club was a gambling company with a monopoly on horse racing, football betting and lotteries, and it was also the largest charity and community benefactor in Hong Kong. The club used to have simple origins of horse racing and it had robust growth along with Hong Kong economy before 1998. In 1996/97 season, the Hong Kong Jockey Club race betting turnover rose to a record peak of HK$92.4 billion. However, it faced adverse condition after this and one of the reasons is bad economy situation. In July 1997, the Asian financial crisis started and Hong Kong’s GDP was stagnant and even turns negative in 1998. And then in 2001, the global economic downturn led by U.S gave Hong Kong another strike. Later in 2003, the outbreak of Sever Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) effected Hong Kong’s visitor arrivals and retail sales severely. Besides economy, regional competition from Macau and other Asian countries and the rise of new forms of illegal betting and offshore betting threated Hong Kong Jockey Club’s business. The vision of the club is to be a world leader in the provision of horse racing, sporting and betting entertainment and Hong Kong’s premier charity and community benefactor and their mission is to provide total customer satisfaction through meeting the expectations of all Club customers and stakeholders, which include the racing and betting public, lottery player, club members, charity and community organizations, government...

...around 3,500 B.C.E. in Mesopotamia. By 1200 B.C.E., a more sophisticated model, the spoked-wheel, was used on chariots as a mode of transportation throughout Eurasia, even reaching as far as Egypt, China and Scandinavia. From there, transportation needs did not change drastically until the first true gasoline automobile was invented in 1885 to1886 by Karl Frederich Benz. With the invention of this new “toy”, men felt the need to push the limits of these vehicles for more than just cargo and passengers. By the beginning of the 20th century, automobile racing took off in both Europe and the United States with each having their own fledgling racing circuits. This trend continued up to present time with two of the world’s most popular racing series: WRC (World Rally Championship), which was launched in 1973 by the FIA (The International Automobile Federation.) and NASCAR (The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing), which was founded by William France, Sr., in 1948. Although both WRC and NASCAR are extreme and captivating in their own respects there are great differences and a few similarities in the skill level of the drivers, the cars, and the fans. First, is the huge gap in the skill level between the WRC driver and the NASCAR driver. WRC drivers are some the most versatile and talented drivers in the world. WRC drivers have an endurance that cannot be matched. Each rally is a 3 day event covering typically 15 to 30 courses, or stages, which together can add...

...Chariot racing plays an important role in sports history. It was one of the most popular and influential sports in ancient history. The sport has many claimed origins and thrived during the Greek, Roman, and Byzantine Empires. The sport that started out so simple evolved as it moved from one era to the next, gaining more importance at every advancement. It was an extremely dangerous sport, as drivers frequently suffered gruesome injuries and unfortunate deaths. Chariot racing teams, or factions, had a very strong fan base. These factions drew tons of spectator support, which would lead to many conflicts between differing factions. These conflicts were politicized, affecting both society and their respective empire. Roman and Byzantine emperors eventually took control of these factions and had their officials running them, placing even more importance on the sport. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, chariot racing only survived in the east, the Byzantine Empire. These Roman factions transitioned with the sport, which played an important role in the history of Byzantium. These factions had an even stronger social and political influence, and in the end, played a role in the demise of its own sport, along with the eventual demise of an empire. The origin of Chariot Racing is an unknown commodity. The first known reference to the sport was by Homer at a funeral for Patroclus where he claimed they raced only one lap around a tree. According to a legend, chariot racing founded...

...Drag Racing is a sport to see who has the best car. What is the history of Drag racing. Drag Racing is very fun to do and watch. If you have seen a race you know how fun they are. Drag racing is fun but dangerous. There are some cars that do not make it off the track in one piece or not run. A speed strip is 200 to 300 feet wide and 500 feet long and that is a big strip. But the longer the strip is the smaller it gets. The smaller the strip gets the faster the car gets and the harder it is to drive the car. The car may or may not lose control. People sometimes do not live if they do lose control. It is a very dangerous sport. But it all starts in the 1930s in a dry river bed. In the 1930s top steed was 100 mph...

...Sampson Racing Case Organizational Leadership – Fall 2011 John Perron I really tried to think about the Framing of this scenario as I also went through the numbers. One unique perspective that I had is that as a young man I used to race motorcycles. While I understand the basic costs and the elements of racing that are presented here, I was surprised that there was never any concern for the driver’s safety in this scenario. It should be the number one concern when making a decision to race or not race. It was not even an element presented in the framing of this decision-making exercise. That being said, I included that in my analysis. I took the approach of listing the facts that the scenario presented and tried to look at the cost of racing versus not racing in the same way as I would look at any scenario where lives are also at stake as in going to the moon, or having brain surgery. Certainly at racings speeds, lives are at stake. How much is a driver’s life worth? There are no guarantees in this scenario for $1,000,000+….it only says Goodstone is considering it. Is a driver’s life worth more or less than $1,000,000? The current financial state of the team is $32,500 in the hole. There are 4 possible outcomes in this scenario: 1) Sampson Team decides to race and finishes in the Top 5 50% Chance. Result: There were no definite numbers, but let’s guess and say that the new annual sponsorship is worth $1,000,000+. 2) Sampson Team decides to race...

Nevertheless, NASCAR has survived the financial worries with a creative mix of brand awareness, solid sponsorships from reputable name vendors, and vivid action-packed television coverage. ...Sack Race Though the exact date of when “sack racing” originated is unknown, one thing is for certain; it’s been a hilarious, and fun way to pass the time for centuries. It is believed that this game originated somewhere around the late 18th century. Countrymen would take their old, used, potato sacks, and hop around in them for fun. This “sack hopping,” eventually progressed into its modern format of “sack racing.” By the late 19th century sack racing was actually considered a serious sport, and even had a brief stint at the Olympics in 1904! Believe it or not, some colleges had university run teams that would intensively train for “sack racing.” Although sack racing no longer holds the prestige that it once did in the 1900′s, it is still seen around the world at a social gathering, birthday parties, and just a fun way to pass the time. Rules: Team Sack Race: To play you need one burlap sack for each team. The more teams racing, the more fun it is.
