Racism and Discrimination in America According to MerriamWebster.com Racism is a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race. As for discrimination it is the prejudice or prejudicial outlook, action, or treatment. If these words exist in the dictionary it is bound to exist in the real world, and it does. Millions of minorities today are treated immorally just because of the color of their skin. People treat them as if they’re trash; people who don’t deserve to be treated humanely. In the US especially, African American, Latinos, and Native Americans have been the target of these racist and discrimination.

For blacks, or African Americans specifically, Lou Ann, a character from the book said when she started seeing an African American person at her work that, “I know Mama would take one look and keel over dead – he’s about seven feet tall and black as the ace of spades” (Kingsolver 230). What Lou Ann said showed that her mother doesn’t like black men, because Lou Ann said that her mother would keel over dead since he’s black. This points out how Lou Ann’s mother judges people base on their skin color, rather than their personality. As a matter of fact, “The Bean Trees” directly states that “Her mother, Mrs. Logan, still pronounced neither angel’s first name nor their last name correctly, saying it something like Ruins. She hadn’t wanted Lou Ann to marry Angel in the first place, but for the wrong reasons. She disliked him because he was Mexican” (Kingsolver 27). This shows that Lou Ann’s mother is racist because she didn’t approve Lou Ann’s marriage to Angel who was Mexican. She continues to call his name wrong when she knew how to pronounce it, which shows that she refuses to accept him, and treats him like a thing that doesn’t deserve to have his name be correctly called.
