Invention of Radio Technology

Radio technology began as wireless telegraphy. This invention didn’t happen all of a sudden. The discovery of radio waves actually set the platform for the invention of radio. It all started with the discovery of radio waves- electromagnetic waves that have the capacity to transmit music, speech, pictures, and other data invisibly through the air.
Radio wasn’t invented by any single person but instead was a combination of several scientists research each of whom pioneered a different area of electromagnetic radiation and radio waves during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Among these men are well known researchers that took part in the Invention of radio Technology such as Heinrich Rudolf Hertz, James Clerk Maxwell, David E. Hughes, Thomas Edison, and Nikola Tesha and much more others took a part in this invention.
In 1800s, a physicist from Scotland had predicted radio waves then after this another physicist from Germany actually proved the existence of radio waves. He showed that waves are same as light or heat waves. Then, the invention of telegraphy with wireless technology took place.
In 1860s James Clerk Maxwell predicted the existence of radio waves, Heinrich Hertz demonstrated the rapid variations of electric current could be projected into space in the form of radio waves similar to light and heat. In 1866 Mahlon Loomis an American dentist successfully demonstrated wireless telegraphy Loomis was able to make a meter connect to a kite and make another to move would be wireless aerial communication.
Guglielmo Marconu an Italian inventor sent and received his first radio signal in Italy in 1895, by 1899 he flashed the first wireless signal across the English Channel and 2 years later received the letter S telegraphed from England to Newfoundland this was the first successful transatlantic radio telegraph message in 1902.
Lee-Deforest invented space telegraphy, the triode amplifiers and the Audion, Lee-Deforest provided that detector. It made it possible to amplify the radio frequency signal picked up by the antenna before application to the receiver detector. De-Forest was also the person who first used the word “radio”. As a result Lee-Deforest work was the invention of amplitude- modulated or AM radio that allowed for a multitude of radio stations which the earlier spark gap transmitters didn’t allow.
Edwin Howard Armstrong invented frequency-modulated or FM radio by controlling the noise static caused by electrical equipment and the earths atmosphere. Until 1936, all American transatlantic telephone communication had to be routed through England. In that year a direct radio telephone circuit was opened to Paris. Telephone connection by radio and cable is now accessible with 187 foreign points. Radio Technology has grown significantly since its early development. In 1954, a small Japanese company called Sony introduced the transistor radio.
In 1965 the first Master FM Antenna system in the world designed to allow individual FM stations to broadcast simultaneously from one source was created on the Empire State Building in NYC.
Walkie talkies, also known as handheld radios are, as the name suggests, a portable two-way radio transceiver. The technology was developed in the Second World War and can still be found today throughout businesses and emergency services. Old military radios are collectors items for many military memorabilia fanatics. A popular older model of military radio is the AN/PRC-77 portable radio. This radio was a popular, highly dependable man-pack and vehicle-mounted radio that was used by the U.S. military in 1968 during the height of the Vietnam war. The AN/PRC-77 replaced the earlier model AN/PRC-25 and since then has been replaced due to the advent of digital technology with the radio system known as SINCGARS (Single Channel Ground and Air Radio System). The AN/PRC-77 is a very simple radio to put together and use for most VHF FM channels.
The word radio itself for many portray the images of the 'wireless' world that we have now. Radio is still in use today, but with less popularity than in its primetime, with all the other forms of media that are now so predominant. Originally all broadcasts came via and AM. AM is Amplitude modulation. Later broadcasts developed into FM which had a higher level of fidelity and was not susceptible to the same levels of static, or interference. Radio is also used in other extents that many people might not think of. Examples of this would be in surgery where people can find radio being used to seal blood vessels using diathermy equipment. It's also used to heat up food and drinks in a microwave oven. A household telephone and more recently cordless telephones use a radio signal from the base to the handset to transmit data from incoming calls. Cordless phones have an advantage over mobile phones when used in the home because they will remain charged (provided that the handset is returned to the base when needed) and will not lose signal since they are directly connected to your landline.

The Invention of radio technology is definitely a great milestone in the history of America. This invention enabled us to listen to the news was conveyed on the radio was completely different from that printed in the daily newspaper. Radio was a huge step in the field of technology; the sound that you hear coming out your radio speakers is mainly due to the transmission of radio signals, this invention made it easy for a common person to hear the world news. This is a significant invention that had an impact on the world that was used by the military, TV companies, government, radio stations, telephone companies, everyday peoples and much more. By inventing a technology such as this our nation will stay up to date on all things.

Radio Frequency Identification (Rfid) Technology in Construction Industry

...Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology is currently being used in such areas as agriculture, athletics, manufacturing, security and law enforcement, and transportation, but few applications have been developed that are related to the construction and facilities operations environment. Lack of standardisation, high costs of implementation, slow technology development and deployment risks, and the lack of skilled labour are all contributors currently preventing the adoption of new RFID technologies in the construction industry. The RFID technology can help improve data accuracy by tracking products through supply chains and by identifying products and items/objects at specific points through Automatic Identification (Auto-ID). The technology enables the detection and identification of tagged objects through the data it transmits. Objective of this topic ‘RFID IN CONSTRUCTION’ is to get an overview of the present application of RFID technology in Construction. Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) is an old technology which was already in use for recognition for anti-aircraft gun shooting in World War. Since then RFID has been taken into use for many other purposes, i.e. securing against theft of goods, bridge crossing fees, car keys etc. The new importance of RFID is connected to certain measures which a group of the world’s biggest retail chains and brand suppliers initiated under the name of Global Commerce Initiative at the end of the 1990’es. The interesting...

A Comparative Study of Cognitive Radio Platforms

...A Comparative Study of Cognitive Radio Platforms Moshe Timothy Masonta CSIR Meraka and TUT P.O. Box 395 Pretoria 0001, South Africa Mjumo Mzyece Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) Pretoria, South Africa Fisseha Mekuria Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) Pretoria 0001, South Africa mmasonta@csir.co.za mzyecem@tut.ac.za fmekuria@csir.co.za ABSTRACT Cognitive radio (CR) technology has become one of the buzzwords within the wireless communications community over the past 12 years. Its ability to learn, decide and adapt to the external environment made CR attractive to regulators, researchers, academia, politicians and the industry. CR promises to bring a paradigm shift in spectrum management policies from command-and-control regime to dynamic and opportunistic spectrum access. Despite more than a decade of research in the CR area, there are too little CR systems ready for the market. This lack of ready CR systems may reflect an overemphasis in the CR literature on theory and simulations with less work done in experimental-basedresearch and publications. In order to fast-track the real-life deployments of CR systems, the research community is now focusing on the development of CR platforms. With different software defined radio (SDR) packages and hardware available, it is confusing to decide which one to build or use. The objective of this paper is to study the design of CR platforms making use available SDR software packages and hardware...

Analyze How Regionalism and Nationalism Are Related to Different Modes of Listening to the Radio in the United States from 1920 to 1980.

...Assignment Analyze how regionalism and nationalism are related to different modes of listening to the radio in the United States from 1920 to 1980. For long it has been discussed how the radio changed the American people – but this analysis is far too diverse and particular to each individual, since the United States have a wide arrange of ethnicity, religions, races, generations and other remarkable differences between different people. This essay will therefore focus on how the different modes of listening to the radio brought together different nation feelings to society in different timings and places. A Cornell scholar, Benedict Anderson, while reflecting about the emerge of nationalism in one country said one day that it had to be imagined, since all the nation elements and individuals may never meet one another and “yet in the mind of each lives the image of their communion”. The first notable change in general knowledge and feeling about a nation was conceived on the newspaper, that would allow several people to read the same stories about the nation and its people at the same time. The newspaper was the first proof of a country to a regular citizen that through it, would get to know people from distant lands with whom he would share his first sense of non-local community. The importance of the radio wasn’t shadowed by the newspaper’s prior timing. Radio added one more sense to the world of mass communication. The air around the device would tremble with ...

Motorola

...Motorola is an American company with many "firsts" in the field of science and technology. Motorola was founded in Chicago, Illinois as Galvin Manufacturing Corporation in 1928, and its first products were battery eliminators. When the company started making car radios in 1930, its name was changed by founders Paul and Joseph Galvin to the made-up word "Motorola," from combination of "motor" and "Victrola," a type of early phonograph. In 1930, when the company had started making car radios, the name was changed. It was changed to Motorola, the name was a made up by two men, Paul Galvin and Joseph Galvin. Paul and Joseph were the founders and came up with the Motorola name by combining the word "Motor" and a type of early phonograph called "Victrola". Indeed, many of the early products were radio related products, from the battery eliminator to the first walkie talkies (in 1940). The company went public (1942) and by the 50's its main business was manufacturing and selling radios and TV's. It opened its first international subsidiary in 1952 in Toronto. A research and development laboratory in 1955 in Phoenix, Arizona. And in 1958 began work with NASA to supply radio equipment. 1960 was the introduction to the 19-inch cordless TV and in 63' the first ever rectangular color TV which quickly became an industry standard. However, in nineteen seventy four, the company sold its quite profitable TV business, and simply left this portion of the consumer electronics market. But...

Telecommunication

...TELECOMMUNICATIONS Telecommunication is communication at a distance by technological means, particularly through electrical signals or electromagnetic waves. Due to the many different technologies involved, the word is often used in a plural form, as telecommunications. Early telecommunication technologies included visual signals, such as beacons, smoke signals, semaphore telegraphs, signal flags, and optical heliographs. Other examples of pre-modern telecommunications include audio messages such as coded drumbeats, lung-blown horns, and loud whistles. Electrical and electromagnetic telecommunication technologies include telegraph, telephone, and teleprinter, networks, radio, microwave transmission, fiber optics, communications satellites and the Internet. A revolution in wireless telecommunications began in the 1900s with pioneering developments in radio communications by Guglielmo Marconi. Marconi won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1909 for his efforts. Other highly notable pioneering inventors and developers in the field of electrical and electronic telecommunications include Charles Wheatstone and Samuel Morse (telegraph), Alexander Graham Bell (telephone), Edwin Armstrong, and Lee de Forest (radio), as well as John Logie Baird and Philo Farnsworth (television). The world's effective capacity to exchange information through two-way telecommunication networks grew from 281 petabytes of (optimally compressed) information in 1986, to 471 petabytes in 1993, to 2.2 (optimally...

Unit 4 Wirless Network Needs

...have a device and you pay a mobile company to providing service for you to use it. To provide service, the mobile company installs tall radio towers with antennas extending off the top. This would support phone calls and text between phones within that mobile network. You speak into your phone and your voice is transferred into bits which are sent out as radio waves to the antenna which is sent to the Telco network as bits and then transferred to its correct destination. This is only the beginning; to allow devices to communicate with more phones than the just the ones within the same network or to connect to data services (google.com, facebook.com) you would need to connect to networks around the world. The process is similar to connecting mobile phones in the same network except instead of the radio towers antenna sending the bits to the Telco network it sends the bits to the internet. This is all capable because the mobile phones do not use copper or fiber cables to transmit bits they use wireless radio technology. Wireless LAN requires that every device connected to the network to have wireless NIC (network interface card). Wireless NIC’s do not need a socket to allow connection with a cable. Rather it has a radio antenna inside for the NIC to send and receive data. WLAN (Wirless Local Area Network) use small devices that perform like radio towers. Usually the wirless node they use is a WLAN access point. The devices nearby communicate through it because access point is connected...

...Radio waves silently transmit information all over the world. Discovered in the late 1800s and fundamental in many of the most important technological advances of the 20th century, radio waves are the basis for almost all non-written communication and most wireless technologies. They transmit signals that carry pictures, data, music and conversations over long distances. Many household products we consider necessary depend on radio waves. AM and FM radios, wireless networks, cordless and cellular telephones, radio-controlled toys, television programming, garage door openers and GPS receivers -- all of these, along with countless other devices, depend on silent, invisible radio waves to operate. Despite their importance, many people have become concerned about the possible negative health effects of excessive radio wave exposure. Specifically, the alleged culprits seem to be cell phones, which transmit their voice and data signals over radio waves, and cell phone towers, which route and receive these signals.  Experts disagree about the long-term effects of electromagnetic radiation generated communications infrastructure. However, if there is a problem with cellular technology, it is probably not coming directly from the towers. Any potential danger is likely to be more worrisome for those who personally use cell phones, because the phones are directly against their heads. Also, cell towers operate at low power. This is part of what makes the cell phone system work properly...

It is not serve only as an information centre but also as medium of entertainment and centre of learning. We can even say that the main role of radio for present time is mostly for entertainment. Nowadays, in the case of innovative many new technologies have been developed, one of the oldest forms of media in the whole wide world has been impacted and it is the radio. Not only radio per se, other kinds of ‘traditional’ media such as newspaper and magazine are also impacted by their ad revenues and it is predicted to be keep on declining. In context of Indonesia solely, there are already 1,178 in total number of radio stations. With so many established radio stations, the medium has become more disintegrated. There is a very high competition between radio stations in providing the best of them of them to the listeners. In Indonesia, a few radio stations are incorporated under one management group. One of them is Masima Group which encompassed of Delta FM, Prambors and Female Radio. Compared to other radio stations, one of problems encountered by Delta FM is because of its unstable personality. In 1994, the targeted listeners for Delta FM are aged between 40-50 years old, who were described as “elegant and intellectual”. Thus during that time, the radio focused on listeners’ favourite oldies songs. In fact...

Interoperability of the Uh72

...mission of the UH72A in the Security and Support battalions is heavily loaded with civil support. Technology has advanced considerably since the production of the current communications package. Law enforcement and federal agencies have been on top of the technology shift including radios that have proprietary software and proprietary encoding. Observation 1: Communications Interoperability of the UH72A due to outdated communications and the array of commercial equipment available to the civil community. Discussion: Currently in the UH72A we have 2 Garmin VHF radios, 1 ARC231 FM/VHF/UHF capable of single channel/frequency hopping/Havquick, and 2 Colbahm radios of single channel FM/VHF/UHF with tone codes (squelch codes). That package worked accordingly on a year 2005 level. Since that time there have been major development in frequency discretion and encoding. The manufacturer of the communication equipment elects to develop software and coding that is discrete to that manufacturer. The discrete coding and software poses an intercommunication issues between other radios on the market and in the field. This typically happens with the federal agencies that seem to acquire more funds for technology than state and local agencies. Recommendation: Since there are so many different manufacturers producing different software and encoding it is not feasible to install all necessary radios to cover the spectrum. One solution is one piece of equipment that will be...
