...White Water Rafting ACC 543 April 2, 2012 White Water Rafting Consultation When considering options to choose when starting a whitewater rafting business, one can become overwhelmed by the number of laws and regulations in place that must be followed and which can limit other decisions for the location and running of the business. Insurance laws and land use regulations vary from state to state; both of these will have a significant impact on how a company conducts business. Real property and personal property laws also vary between the states and play a significant role in business decisions. Research into insurance laws, environmental regulations, and the impact of real versus personal property laws in states considered for business operations is paramount to a successful business venture. Real and personal property acquisition A whitewater rafting business requires operating from the ground up. In searching for the best place suited to start up this business three sites where chosen, the Nolichucky River in North Carolina, the Chattooga River in South Carolina, and the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon in Arizona. There are two kinds of property, personal and real. Personal property in all three states is classified as movable. Mobile homes are classed as personal property and may be acquired with minimal formality. According to all state laws, mobile homes as personal property depreciate in value. Real property is immovable or attached to the land and...

...I remember a time in my life not too long ago when my family and I went white water rafting for the first time. We had been spending some of our summer vacation at a cabin in the Smokey Mountains, close to Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The next day we would experience feelings of exhilarating excitement, with a sense of suspense and anticipation as we rafted down the Nantahala River. I recall in vivid detail the scenery around us as we Adventures on the Rapids Adventures on the Rapids "This could be your last meal," my mother jokingly said before we left that day. ...Krauss: In preparation for our meeting on May 8, I have taken it upon myself to research river rafting to prepare our staff for their trip next month. River rafting, also known as whitewater rafting, is a recreational activity using an inflatable raft to navigate rivers or other bodies of water. The difficulty of the course is measured by the roughness of the water. A scale ranging from 1 to 6 is used with 1 representing calm waters and 6 representing rough waters. Rafting is a great activity for anyone and everyone. “It not only offers adrenaline-pumping action for the adventurous lot but also ample scope for nature lovers and solitude seekers to soak in the beauties of nature while floating along lazily”.[1] However, we must all keep in mind that river rafting can be a dangerous sport. Adequate planning and following the safety tips below can greatly reduce the risk of injury. • Avoid river rafting alone. Whether you are an experienced river rafter or not, it is important to always have someone with you. • Avoid alcoholic beverages before rafting. However, it is important that one drinks liquids such as water before, during, and after the rafting experience. • Avoid rafting in the dark. By starting early in the morning and ending before the sun sets we reduce the danger of hitting big rocks and encountering huge waterfalls.[2] When river rafting, one must dress accordingly. Please adhere to the following clothing requirements: • Wear...

...Jake Livingston Mrs. Niel English composition 101 MW 1-12:30 9-10-11 Underneath the Rapids “Jake, come and eat before your brothers eat everything!” It was another gorgeous morning in the West Virginian Mountains. My parents decided that we all needed to bond a little more as a family, so they planned for us all to go on a family vacation. This wasn’t such a terrible idea seeing as how my brothers seemed to hate me, as all older brothers hate their snitch little brothers. They decided that a white water rafting trip seemed like a fun idea for the boys. My sister had to stay home because she was pregnant with her first child. So off we went in the summer of 2005, to good ole’ West Virginia. I was 12 at the time, while my older brothers, Nate and Nick, were 19 and 17. Nate was a two time convicted felon who loved to drink at the time. His life wasn’t exactly going down the right path and my parents wanted to try and connect with him more. Nick on the other hand was a pretty nice kid who was well liked in the community, he had his secrets though. Nick loved to sneak out and go to girl’s houses late at night, I was fortunate enough to share a room with him. Every time he would sneak out when I was still awake, I would tell my parents. I don’t know why I did this to my own older brother; I guess I just liked the attention. He would know it was me and beat me up for betraying him, which would inevitably end up in even more trouble for him. So as you can guess he didn’t like...

...Rafting Water. It seems like such a simple word. Add freezing and training to that and you get my training for my summer job. This past summer I worked at North Woods Rafting as a white water raft guide. Before I could officially call myself a guide I had to go through training, but this wasn’t the ordinary show up watch a video and then attend a CPR class type of training. Well, we did watch a video and take a CPR certification class, but there was much more to it. On the first day of training I arrived at 7 am on a cold May morning. Now for most people May is a month where the weather is usually nice and warm, but I live in northern New Hampshire. Here that May day was barely 36 degrees and the water temperature wasn’t any different. We were shown a video and sized to receive our guide gear. After struggling into a wetsuit and layering on as much fleece as possible we were read; albeit slight reluctant to begin training. The first bit of training was rafts themselves. We were taught how to open and close valve and the terminology that goes with the rafts. We were shown how to blow up the boats and how to tell when they were done. A few facts were thrown into the mix also. For example did you know that most river rafts alone weigh around 200 pounds? Also if you leave a fully inflated raft in the sun the heat would cause the chambers to expand and eventually explode! Next we loaded up the trailer and headed to the Pontook Dam on the Androscoggin...

...Salmon River Weekend Reflection On the weekend of April 22nd through the 23rd, the University of Idaho Recreation 224 class led by Bruce Saxman took a trip to the Lower Salmon River for a spring whitewater rafting trip. With a group of fourteen people, we brought two separate rafts for individuals to get different experiences piloting each style of boat. The first raft, which was slightly smaller, was a frameless paddle boat that could hold a few less people but was also more maneuverable. The second boat was a stern-framed raft that was a few feet longer and had quite a bit more capacity for both people and gear. Since the group was not camping on the river, the amount of space that was left was largely unused on account of all the gear being left in the vehicles. Participants had widely varying expectations of this trip and many were apprehensive about the river, weather, and other factors, but they pulled together and actually created an exceptional recreational experience. There was one student in particular, named Grant Curtis, who seemed to really enjoy himself during the entire trip. The outcome he excelled at the most was absolutely the river running portion. Though he had some experience with maneuvering through swift water, he had never experienced anything like the Salmon River. The water was running exceptionally high at an accelerated pace which made most of the rapids far less daunting. That being said, from the road, it seemed as if both boats would have an...

...mountain Keep hope alive! page 4 page 6 page 8 These texts look at different kinds of challenges, from taking part in extreme sports to experiences that change the way people think. They also explore how facing a challenge can inspire people. Facing the challenge FTC_booklet_282644.indd 3 3 12/12/07 2:18:04 pm In this article, Louise Rogers tries to understand why young people are attracted to extreme sports. You can now go deep sea diving without oxygen and do parachute jumping from space. These activities are apparently some of the latest examples of extreme sports. They certainly sound extremely dangerous, and it’s tempting to call them extremely stupid too. You begin to wonder what people will do next: white water rafting without the raft? Skateboarding down Everest? What exactly are extreme sports anyway? According to sports expert Angie Naidoo, they are action sports usually done by someone on their own rather than in a team. ‘Extreme sports involve more than one of the following: speed, height, danger or spectacular stunts,’ explains Angie. ‘They are also often about challenging some aspect of the natural world, whether it’s defying gravity or scaling a very high mountain. They are not all as extreme as parachuting from space! And extreme sports are not just a recent trend either: skiing, skateboarding, in-line skating and mountain biking are all examples of extreme sports that people have done for years.’ Moreover, these sports are becoming more and...

...Out of all the fun things that our family did from going on a trip to Disneyland with the Andersons to our traditional winter retreat to San Francisco. The most memorable event of 2016 was freezing our tails on the white waters of Glacier National Park. This year was exceptionally special because us, as a family, went on our second rafting trip. Our host was the Glacier National Park Rafting Company and our guides were Doc and John. The two of them took our family, as well as another older couple, on the exciting overnight rafting trip. On the last few days of our Glacier park reunion, The Thompsons decided to try out a new activity to raft down a river that borders the park. After two hot days of swimming in the pool of the best Koa, we arrived ready to be sent off on the river. From the office, everyone hopped on a bus and drove about thirty minutes up stream to be let off and sent away. During that time, the guides talked about the water levels and how the river will roar depending on the time of year. When the boats were hauled off of the buss and our luggage was packed tight into the supply raft, Doc floated away downstream to meet us at the camping spot. John got us prepared and ready with the tools that we will use for the day. Even though most of us already knew, John taught us how to row and when to row using the secret language of commands that he gave. Then we set off into the the water. The...

This explosion has broadened the business market for rafting companies in Florida, Kentucky, and California. Cheeseman (2007) stated, “Real property is immovable or attached to immovable land or buildings, whereas personal property is movable” (p. 755). Real property plays an important role in the United States (U. S.) economy of property and ownership rights. The real property concept is concerned with the legal rights of property as opposed to the physical attributes of tangible land. Real property consisted of items of personal property...
