...Name: Tutor: Course: Date: Rhetorical analysis writing Pleasant point of view Immediately I arrived at the appointment spot I stood gazing at the view she would approach. Everything was live and encouraging including the caressing breeze from the palm trees near the small artificial beach. Behind the narrow tunnel, two pretty twin girls played their trumpets in such lulling rhythms that stole away the boredom of the park. They seemed to draw the attention of the music lovers as they easily shifted from tune to tune. The parrot picked the words and helped to amplify the popular classical compositions that everybody associated with in Indiana. Even the gardener in the flower bed extension realized the vivacity in the park, unlike her early morning hour. The rose, lily, and hibiscus flowers intermarried like formally wed couples that cited the parents for the good parenthood they had attained. She adjusted her helmet and radiantly gazed at the tunnel point a time when an oak tree danced shaking off its bright red, blue and orange canopy of leaves. The leaves fell from above like the rare rain in the semi-desert covering everything that the tree’s shade touched. It sent a spring of motion among the other hidden creatures including the white and black -spotted wild cats who whimpered and rolled over the blanket that had formed in their place. The horse neighed in a rather merry mood as the queue of children anxiously anticipated to take a ride that quantified the time spent...

...never just rain.”(Foster 75), “Rain can be more mysterious, murkier, more isolating than most other weather conditions. Fog is good, too, of course. Then there is the misery factor.”(Foster 76). In The Things They Carried, the author was sitting outside keeping watch in case of an ambush. The fog was rolling in and making it hard for him to see, so he wouldn’t know where to shoot or where to throw his grenade. The fog added a lot of suspense because he didn’t know how far away or how close the enemy was to the camp (O’Brien 126). Weather during a war can be a lot more than just rain, snow, or fog. It adds more of a so-called obstacle in the battle because it can throw off one’s depth and sound perception. It makes it difficult to know for sure how far away or close something is, one may not have the best aim when shooting their opponents. The weather can create more of a challenge, by causing one to hide until the weather passes, or to make the best of what they have and try their best. O’Brien states, that when it got cold at night, he and his men could feel the cold in their bones, and how the cold makes you lose your courage (O’Brien 141). He also explains that the battlefield was blowing up. The rain made it seem like the mortars were coming from the sky, and all the sounds of thunder, bombs, and yelling was making it difficult to tell where the mortars were coming from. Then some of the men started shooting up flares hoping it would help, but it made the rain all multicolored...

...Because it is running by – essay A. “Because It Is Running By” is a short story which was published in 2009 by Jo Lloyd. It is a short story because there are few people in it, it is short, the action is simple, realistic and it has an open ending. This short story is about Wil who is in a place in his life where he has to choose where he wants to be and he has to let the past go. The main character in the story is Wil who lives with his mother. (Page 1, line 8): “The B&B’s the only thing making money, his mother had said. We just need the weather, he had said, the veg’ll pick up”. Wil does not like changes and in the start he is sceptical about the new helper Edie. Wil and his mother’s lives “stopped” when Wil’s father died. (Page 1, line 14): “The guests had breakfast in the room that used to be the family sitting room. […] Wil had hardly been in that room since the B&B started.” (Page 1, line 25): “Sometimes, on her way out, she’d see Wil working in the field, planting, digging, stacking boxes of veg into the back of the old van”. It sounds like Wil is a person who works hard and maybe he tries to take over his father’s role. It is not mentioned that Wil has other siblings and maybe that is the reason, why he wants to have the father role. Wil’s father died when he was sixteen and it is the age where you have to find yourself. Edie from London is very different contrary to Wil. In the start she is turned inwards but he tries to make her outgoing. (Page 2, line...

...animal of your body love what it is”, these lines show repetition because she uses the word 'You' over and over again. These first few lines grasp the reader’s attention because you will think she is talking directly to you. These lines are telling the readers that they don’t have to ask for forgiveness all the time and they should be love themselves like the wild geese they have no regrets they don’t have a concept of right and wrong. The next lines also show repetitive rhythm using “Meanwhile”, “Meanwhile the world goes on. Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain are moving across the landscapes, over the prairies and the deep trees, the mountains and the rivers. Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air, are heading home again.” In these lines she is saying that the no matter what wrong we have done the world still goes on, it’s not going to stop. These lines have a lot of descriptive words that allows the reader to grasp a picture in their mind. The last line here shows that the geese are returning home and so can you. The last lines of the poem “Whoever you are, no matter how lonely, the world offers itself to your imagination, calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting --over and over announcing your place in the family of things.”, show that No matter who you are, or what situation you are in, you create your own perspective of the world, either positive or negative. Overall I believe that this poem was very inspirational. The author uses...

...Ray Bradbury’s dystopian story, “All Summer in a Day,” takes place on Venus—a planet where it rains all of the time. Margot, a recent arrival on Venus, remembers what the other children cannot. Grieving the loss of the sun, she remembers its beauty and warmth. The other children are jealous that she even remembers. This conflict creates a sad situation for all. Ray Bradbury creates the theme that when people cannot get over their own pain, they wind up hurting others and he illustrates this by using sentence variety and description. Jealousy and the pain that results from it shines through the story as a central issue impacting all characters. When people cannot get over their own pain, they hurt others is a theme demonstrated by the characters’...

...Descriptive Writing The fiery ball blinds you as it floods the beach with its rays, making the shady beach of Barry Island seem like paradise, heat comparable to the Sahara desert. A child desperately tries to prevent his ice cream from a sand encrusted death as it plummets to the floor, debating whether or not he wants a vanilla and sand flavour ice cream, his face puzzled as he decides on retrieval, he would soon be distracted by the horde of people rapidly rushing to the depths of the sea. The sea sits calm and patient, almost inviting to the untrained eye. From afar the sea seems crystal-like projecting as it does a near perfect mirror image as if the sky and sea are at one. The closer you get to the sea you soon start to see its cracks as if it was a porcelain doll, beautiful and almost elegant from a distance. It's too late to turn back now the seas illusion has set in, the soggy sand has captured your footprint. Suddenly the sea shows its true colours a horrible musk of black filth, home to all types of disgusting bacteria waiting to pounce on the weak immune system. The stench of chip fat rules the air like a corrupt king slaying the sense of smell. Enticing the beach goers into a calorific snack, washed down by the warmth of a flat lifeless beer, where the rules of 'best served chilled' have been extremely violated. Seagulls circle the area ready to raid the sand for the food the sea has not yet claimed, Vermin of the air are hunting their prey. ...

...Isabella Thomas Fundamentals of Writing Professor Suzie Toliao November 19, 2014 Descriptive Essay Towards the end of my senior, I began to question my parents every day in regards to my graduation gift. I came up with so many things that could have been my gift but it was still always a no. Finally, after so many weeks had gone by my mother sits me aside and says &Because you are graduating and so is your sister soon, your father and I are going to give you a vacation to go anywhere you want, but there is a price limit; I was in complete shock. The first place that ran through my mind was Greece, but it went way over the limit. As soon as I told my sister, we were looking like crazy for places to go to. Places like Mexico, St. Thomas, Puerto Rico, Hawaii; the list can go on and on. Then we finally decided to go to the Bahamas and I do not regret it at all. The culture and land was completely different, it was indeed an experience I would never forget. My First trip to the Bahamas made me feel grateful, sympathetic and inquisitive. It was raining when we landed but it did not stop my enthusiasm of simply being on an island of the Bahamas. We already had our own transportation to get to the hotel paid for and I was anxiously waiting for our driver to arrive. Standing there I can just smell the rain and Caribbean all in one, I smelled the lovely blend of oils secreted by the plants. As the driver arrived we got in the car and started heading to our hotel. Already...

...Creative Writing Written Task 1! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Isaac Kweon! Mr. Montgomery! IB DP Language and Literature HL! May 18, 2014! ! ! ! Rationale:! ! ! ! For my creative writing, I decided to choose one specific scene from the book The Great Gatsby and change the plot in a way so that the theme of the book and the characteristics of each people in the scene can we well represented. This creative writing focuses on showing one of the main themes in the book The Great Gatsby by the usage of different characters. The modified story progresses without the readers realizing that they themselves as well as Gatsby is being manipulated. The story does not finish with a definite ending, but different writing styles allow the readers to deduce the ending.! ! To successfully portray the theme of materialism and emptiness of the American Dream (Daisy in this story), I changed the plot of the original story. Instead of Daisy saying she did love Tom in the original story, in this creative writing, she says she never loved Tom. However, with the dialogues that constantly allude the downfall of Gatsby and the employment of the distinct characteristic traits of the characters, readers can indirectly get the sense that Daisy’s actions are not true. For example, Tom’s calmness sharply contrasts with his real characteristics, which the reader may feel odd about and wonder about what his true motives are. Also, Daisy's sudden change in the mood after the mention of money shows how materialistic...

...Descriptive Writing Task We had just finished a tiring day at school. We were now strolling briskly on our way home; it felt like it was miles away. The sun beamed on us as if it was watching us. Suddenly In a blink of an eye the sun disappeared and it poured down with rain, we saw a massive deserted house in front of us. As we headed towards the tree lined path, the tree’s towered over us as we walked towards the house. The house glared at us, I had unwanted feeling as if the house wanted us to retreat. But I ignored the signs and continued. As we got to the porch we saw a timeworn door. We pushed the door and it creaked open, the big rusty hinges holding onto it for dear life. The cold breeze punched my face. We found ourselves in the hallway. All the furniture was covered in white sheets. The floor had a massive old red dirty carpet spread across the hall like butter. The wallpaper was hanging off the walls; revealing long jagged cracks. Glancing up my eyes were drawn to the huge gilt edged chandelier that was hanging precariously from the ceiling. it was the only thing that made the house look better. Without warning I heard the floor boards creak upstairs, the hair prickled up my neck like a cat with a scare. I had a feel we weren’t alone in the house. My heart was beating faster than a cheetah. I felt in an awkward position as I couldn’t go outside and I didn’t want to be inside. There was a weird smell. It smelt like the house was rotting. The house was damp and...

...the scientific method is and exactly how it is used or can be used on an everyday basis. The scientific method is a method often used to help a person or a group logically or rationally draw a conclusions about an in particular subject or topic. The scientific method is not just used by scientists, but is also used by many others such as historians, criminal investigators, doctors, engineers, and anyone else who is trying to intelligently solve some sort of problem. One thing to understand about the scientific method is that it can’t be used to answer every question or solve every problem a person may be having, but it can be used as a way to solve many problems such as how to get a car started or how to stop the roof from leaking when it rains. The objective of this paper is to define what the scientific method is and to explain what steps are used to problem solving. According to the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language the scientific method is defined as “The principles and empirical processes of discovery and demonstration considered characteristic of or necessary for scientific investigation, generally involving the observation of phenomena, the formulation of a hypothesis concerning the phenomena, experimentation to demonstrate the truth or falseness of the hypothesis, and a conclusion that validates or modifies the hypothesis.” When using the scientific method there are six different steps a person must remember and follow in order to properly come up with...

...PSYCHOLOGY 260 SHORT WRITING ASSIGNMENT #3 SOCIAL NORMS In society today, many people act accordingly to social norms which is generally “implicit or explicit rules a group has for acceptable behaviours” (Aronson, Wilson, Fehr, Akert, 2013). If an individual acts defiantly towards expected behaviours, most of the other people would tend to isolate or reject that individual. In part of my violation of the social norm, I had worn flip-flops with socks the entire Thursday out in public to interpret people’s reactions. This social norm is referred to a descriptive norm, considering that this “behaviour is approved or disapproved of by others” (Aronson et al. 2013). This day was like any other regular Vancouver day, it consisted of rain. It became abundantly clear that the social norm for that day would require an individual to have shoes on. Besides the social context that it is generally uncomfortable walking with your socks drenched in water, some people believe that wearing flip-flops with socks altogether is despicable, and unacceptable social behaviour. As I walk through the school, I began to notice a lot more people looked at me when I walked by, compared to the usual nil before. To my senses, these stares felt nothing like acceptance, but felt more related to exclusion. This was understandable, as groups tend to use “social exclusion as effective ways to enforce normative behaviour” (Whitson, Wang, Kim, Cao, Scrimpshire, 2013). It wasn’t until after school, that...

...tweakit resource guide The Assassin KS4 > GCSE > Creative Writing 2 > The Assassin How it works This is an oven-ready resource, great for producing effective writing from students because it’s short, simple and elegantly structured. Students follow the instructions and – bingo! – come up with a piece of original prose. However, it has become so well-liked by teachers that exam boards have commented on its popularity as a piece of GCSE coursework, expressing concern about its ‘very limiting framework’ (Edexcel) and ‘questionable content’ (AQA) (see the AQA A Examiners’ Report for June 2006 and the Edexcel Examiners’ Report for Summer 2007). Here are some ideas to take it further. Try this! Do read the Teacher Notes at the start of the resource – they contain a number of great ideas to spice up the activity and develop learning. Or this!
