...At work pay raises are given on the anniversary of your start date, mine was three months ago, but I hadn’t gotten my raise. Actually, I hadn’t gotten one in over two years due to the recession and despite having taken on more responsibility attributable to employees leaving. Normally, I wouldn’t ask for a raise, but the company has been doing extremely well the past year. The place and time for the interaction as well as what to say were planned. I approached my boss at the end of the work day. I nervously made my case, justifying my pay raise. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that my boss had actually planned on having a meeting with me to discuss a raise. My second ask was for was a family vacation. Although my husband had some PTOs...

...How to raise your child Raising a child demands time and effort and being a good parent can be very complicated. There is no wrong or right when raising a child, but there sure are consequences. At home, it is often the parents who are in control and it is of course important what they decide, but what's more important for the child's health and well-being is how they decide it. A child's behavior depends a lot on how it is raised. Do the parents for instance raise their child dictatorial, democratic, flexible or just kind of random? There has now become bigger focus on what we call Chinese tiger mothers. Some may say that their way of raising children is almost dictatorial but there has actually become a bigger understanding for tiger mothers especially in China. There is no doubt that tough control, intense training and discipline often improve the child's academic presentations but on the other hand, the child will often lose its imagination, creativity and their interest in learning. It is a good thing that the parents prepare their children for the education system with strict rules and very serious teaching, but even though the child gets good grades in school they will still develop very bad social skills and eventually end up feeling lonely and maybe isolate themselves from others. Suicide among Chinese youth has been a significant problem in China in the past years. There are several causes for young people's suicide but in many cases, the high number of suicides...

...The Update Do you believe that the winners should take it all? In this paper I will discuss the existing plan, the proposed plan, how to score the two of the processes, and the ethical issues regarding an open system. As the report states, “Who could complain when there is actually merit money for pay raises” (Miller, 2009, p.1). During the deans meeting, Jeff Foreman, was one of the leads in discussing handling salary increases differently in the future. This would give fewer people more money rather than distributing pay increases to more faculty members as had been the case in the most recent years. A lot of the chairs had come up with different options, but Jeff Foreman said that “Chairs needed to carefully consider because so many factors were involved” (Miller, 2009, p.1). The dean wanted the recommendations of the chairs within forty eight hours so there wasn’t much time. They needed to think and think fast. The existing plan wasn’t getting the job done in the most effective way. The existing plan that they had was party entitlement that split pay up between most of the faculty. This existing plan that they currently had was divided into thirds. The top third received two thirds of the money, the second third received one third, and the last third received nothing at all. The chairs felt that the winner should take all. They felt that the employees that succeed the most should be rewarded in the greatest possible way. The new proposal would take away from the middle...

...Netflix Raises Price Again 1) Do you think that the increase in price is going to hurt Netflix? Why or why not? 2) What other options to increase revenues, if any, would Netflix have other than to raise prices? 3) Given the huge customer base of 65 million, has the market saturated? Do you think the stock of Netflix is a strong buy given the growth they have been experiencing, or would this soon bottom out? Please explain your thoughts. Mathew, I think you chose a great topic do to majority of people now-a-days having Netflix, so you will get a lot of feedback and different opinions. My opinions on your questions are followed: I do not think the increase in price is going to hurt Netflix. Like you mentioned, cable along with satellite are quite expensive. I became a Netflix customer earlier this year, and since then I have used Netflix more than our satellite TV. The $1 increase does not bother me, especially since it will not affect me until next year. Nor do I think new customers will be bothered with it. As long as they use that extra revenue to their advantage to be ahead of their competitors and provide more for their customers then their customers will not mind paying for it. It’s obvious that one best way Netflix can increase their revenue other than raising their prices is to add advertisement, however, I believe this would cause a down fall in customers. So possibly taking another route would be best for them. Maybe they can lock their customers in by providing...

...Raising Troops Code of the Samurai by Taira Shigesuke and The Methods of the Ssu-Ma (author unknown) both focus a lot on a sort of “code” for warriors during warfare. My question is what is the best way to raise troops? These two readings explain different answers to my question, but to answer it myself I would say the best way to raise troops would be to not focus solely on things such as strength or marksmanship, but to focus also on the mindset of a troop and how to pull through in times of difficulty and how to respect warfare and their unit and how to face fear and overcome obstacles. Taira Shigesuke writes about how, first and foremost, a warrior should consider it his first concern to keep death in mind at all times. But you don’t just have a duty to the military; you have to fulfill your loyalty to your family as well. Unlike the warrior ways described in the Ssu-Ma, Samurai warriors focused day and night on their duties as a warrior, whether they were a farmer, or merchant, etc. They always carried a sword with them as to always be prepared and keep death in mind at all times. Education was not important early on, and even 12 and 13 year olds were learning martial arts instead of focusing on becoming literate. Their sole focus was the way of a warrior. Now, however, those born in the present era focus on literature and reading and writing from the time they are seven or eight in times of peace. A big difference between the Ssu-Ma and the code of the Samurai is...

It is hurting millions of students that are attending here and it is my job to help find ways to increase the tuition instead of lowering it for students that can’t pay out of pocket expenses. Assess a raise in tuition and if it will necessarily result in more revenue. 2. Describe the conditions under which revenue will (a.) rise, (b.) fall, or (c.) remain the same. 3. ...Most startups that raise money do it more than once. A typical trajectory might be (1) to get started with a few tens of thousands from something like Y Combinator or individual angels, then (2) raise a few hundred thousand to a few million to build the company, and then (3) once the company is clearly succeeding, raise one or more later rounds to accelerate growth. Reality can be messier. Some companies raise money twice in phase 2. Others skip phase 1 and go straight to phase 2. And at Y Combinator we get an increasing number of companies that have already raised amounts in the hundreds of thousands. But the three phase path is at least the one about which individual startups' paths oscillate. This essay focuses on phase 2 fundraising. That's the type the startups we fund are doing on Demo Day, and this essay is the advice we give them. Forces Fundraising is hard in both senses: hard like lifting a heavy weight, and hard like solving a puzzle. It's hard like lifting a weight because it's intrinsically hard to convince people to part with large sums of money. That problem is irreducible; it should be hard. But much of the other kind of difficulty can be eliminated. Fundraising only seems a puzzle because it's an alien world to most founders, and I hope to fix that by supplying a map through it. To founders, the behavior of investors is often opaque—partly because their motivations are obscure, but partly because they deliberately mislead you. And the misleading...

...Ameli Alegre I deserve a raise One of the most important things in my life is my job. I have been working with you for five years. I am a worker that follows all the rules, and I have accomplished all the goals of the company. I have always listened to you with respect. My time management, dealing with a lot of stress and my excellent experience and performance in Little Caesar are reasons why I deserve a raise. First of all, time management is a key factor in this company. Deadlines, demands, goals and priorities are a list of things I have to manage everyday. For example, the most busy days I have to create a work plan to lead a big team with organization and control. With this work plan I save a lot of time, and the day will flow smoothly. That means a big responsibility for me, because I have to take extra effort and greater motivation to keep a good environment in the workplace. Also, I have to deal with the demands of the costumers on time and accomplish the weekly goals of the company. I perform labor scheduling, food ordering and cleanliness. I know what I want to be and do because “if you do not plant the seeds, you will end up with weeds.” Excessive stress can interfere with the productivity of the company. I have always demonstrated you that I can deal with immense stress and pressure. For example, many stressful situations can happen in the workplace. One day a new worker was...

...Chapter 2 – How to Raise Money Lucas Bennett 3 Feb 2015 Do or do not, there is no try. Always talk with confidence in the success of your product. Attitude determines outcome. Investors will be more likely to invest. Determining how much money you need to raise will determine who you will be courting for seed money. All financial planning models that determine financial need will be wrong. Therefore, it is wiser to plan how long you want to operate your startup until the next meaningful milestone and/or how long to get users or expected revenue growth and/or what is your burn rate. Generally there should be real progress around a year. (approximate at best). When determining a goal for seed money never ask for more than is absolutely necessary, a VC may hold back investment because they believe you will not meet your necessary goals. Additionally, do not give a range of goals. For example, between 5 Million and 7 Million. Be precise. Things you will need before courting a VC: (1) A short description of your business also known as your elevator pitch. This is a quick description of your business. Typically between one and three paragraphs and describes the product, the team, and the business. Concludes with a very direct paragraph about whatever next step you want. (2) An executive summary is a 1-3 page description of your idea, product, team and business. This is your first impression with the firm and expect it to be passed around. Therefore it...

...Final Paper Christopher A. Malloy PHI 445: Personal & Organizational Ethics Instructor: Sandra Watts June 3, 2013 Final Paper The two organizations I will be focusing on throughout the course are two organizations I have actually donated to. The not-for-profit organization is the American Red Cross and the for-profit organization is Cancer Treatment Center of America. Being in the military and having a family member to have passed from cancer, these two organizations are dear to me and my family. The American Red Cross of America is the type of organization that produces products to support disaster relief, supporting the military families, health and safety training and education, blood drives for lifesaving blood and international services. The majority of their employers are volunteers that have been involved with the Red Cross because of the help they received during a disaster or life-changing event in their family. Their customers are the American people during times of disaster such as tornado, flood, fire or earthquake victims. Their customers are also, internationally whenever disaster strikes. So the treatment of them both, such always is fair and impartial. The American Red Cross manufactures their product through corporate and foundation funding, community partners, individual major donors and a national celebrity cabinet. The way they utilize their product is by teaching their employers and customers how to prepare their home and family, school...

...From the 16th century to the 18th, the ways of thinking has changed dramatically, and along with that is the strategies to raise children the best and most effective way to ensure that they have a bright future. The major social and intellectual movements like the Reformation, Absolutism, and the Enlightenment dramatically influenced how parents thought they should raise their children. Some of the topics that saw the most change between periods were the ways to interact with and treat children, roles of family members inside the home, and the best way to punish a child. Raising the new leaders is an extremely vital task, which is seen a momentous change over the almost 300 year period. The ways that parents interacted and loved their children...

...Kawabata’s use of colorful imagery provides a delightful reading experience for those of us who enjoy romantic literature. He considered the collection, Tales to Hold in the Palm of Your Hand, to be "miniature works of art".(Nextext) Let us explore Kawabata’s use of such ingenious romantic symbolism within, "The Grasshopper and the Bell Cricket", as he searches for love, beauty, and harmony. In summary, this story tells a tale, of a university student walking along, when he hears the voice of an insect. Enjoying the song of the insect, he happens upon a group of children with beautiful lanterns out searching for insects. While the children are hunting insects, a boy finds a ‘grasshopper’, and continues to ask if anyone would like a ‘grasshopper’, until the voice of a certain girl exclaims that, "Yes", she wants the grasshopper. Carefully the boy captures the insect and releases it to the girl. Surprisingly, the ‘grasshopper’ is actually a much sought after ‘bell cricket’. This new discovery delights the little girl, and then the narrator realizes that the little boy must have known all along that he had found a ‘bell cricket’, and was saving it for that particular girl. Consider that Kawabata placed himself as the mysterious narrator of this short story. Knowing that he grieved from a lonely existence longing to be loved, one can see how he wished himself across the threshold of youth, as seen in the first paragraph, when the narrator peers "Behind the white board...

...I. How many of you think that the minimum wage is too low? II. Do you think that every American should be able to keep up with the costs of living? III. As a teen employee, I know the struggle is real. Trying to make ends meet without running to my parents every time I'm in a jam is hard when I'm trying to live on minimum wage. IV. The purpose of my speech is to persuade my audience that we need a higher minimum wage to be able to assure American workers that they can support their family. Transition: Let me draw your attention to some facts about the minimum wage. Body I. A higher minimum wage could help disadvantaged workers to cover the costs of finding and keeping a job, including transportation, child care, and uniforms (Schmitt, p. 17). We need the minimum wave increased to help people make ends meet. a. The minimum wage has shown to lead to a decline in the number of students in school. i. According to David Neumark, "Demand shifts toward higher productivity -employees after a minimum wage increase and that these employees take jobs in lieu of enrollment in school, in the process displacing lower-productivity employees from employment (p. 199). ii. According to Laura Giuliano, the "employment effects may depend on the group of workers affected and on the specifics of particular labor markets. b. There is a lot of sky-is-falling rhetoric suggesting that a high minimum wage will be a catastrophic...
