A society was starting off being created with the children who crashed on the island and there were two main leaders who wanted to overcome each other's supremacy. Jack and Ralph believed they both had to have the power over everyone on the island. As Jack states,"I ought to be chief," said Jack with simple arrogance, "because I'm chapter chorister and head boy. I can sing C sharp."’ (19) Jack believes he is the one with most power because of the skills he gained at the school he was before crashing on the island. Before the power of the leaders started to get more out of hand the other children on the island took a vote on who should be chief/leader and that is when Ralph was chosen as leader. Ralph on the other hand states, ‘“I am chief. …show more content…

Ralph's and Jack’s idea was to make a better society or their own utopia. Jack's big idea was just to survive and stay healthy while Ralph wanted to get rescued. Jack had his own group accompanying him towards his goal of his own utopia while Ralph only had Piggy on his side. Ralph tried creating a utopia while Jack was just creating a distopia. Ralph just wanted the attention of the kids from the island to be able to organize a plan to get rescued while Jack just wanted to prove he had the power to live on his own without any adults around. ..."I agree with Ralph. We've got to have rules and obey them. After all, we're not savages. We're English, and the English are the best at everything. So we've got to do the right things.". This is one of the first things that Jack said to all the boys, and it shows that before the savagery took over he believed a leader would be the best for all of them, but he did indeed let the savagery take over, and started to believe that there should not be rules. In fact, Jack even said "bullocks to rules" so it shows that he has changed. Which means that, the best leader in this case would have been Ralph, because he has stayed grounded, and has not drastically changed, he is more of a logical thinker, doesn't give in to the savagery, and always keeps...

Ralph Lord Of The Flies Quote Analysis

...Ralph was a well-structured leader because he not only wanted for everyone to be rescued, but he also yearned to build shelters and for everything to be in order like a civilized world. Ralph’s motivations were to build shelter, keeping everything organized and stable and figuring out methods to be rescued. “I was talking about smoke! Don’t you want to be rescued”, (page 45). The quote signifies that while Jack and the littluns were to busy horseplaying he was focused on keeping the fire going in order to be rescued. Ralph states, “We need shelters” (page 42). As Ralph gives that statement, it displays how he wanted an area for everyone to feel secure and away from harm. “Listen, everybody. I got to have time to think things out. I can’t decide what to do straight off. Everybody must stay around here and wait and not go away” (pg). That shows that Ralph is trying to keep everything arranged and make everyone stay calm. Ralph did contribute to the tragedy of the group splitting up and becoming savages by not allowing Jack to hunt and demanding them to keep the fire going so they can be rescued. “You and your blood, Jack Merridew! You and your hunting! We might have gone home-”(page 58). The idea that Ralph shouts at him for not keeping the fire going endlessly is what caused Jack to make...

Lord of the Flies

...Lord of the Flies Full book report 1. A person’s behaviour is determined by several causes through out his life. The phase already begins when we are born. As a child we’re taught how to behave by our parents. Later on our teachers and surroundings influence our behaviour towards a more and more civilized one. In a society we’re kept as civilized as possible by following rules and laws. If we as human beings are placed away from a society, will we be able to maintain our civilized characters, or will we become savaged barbarians? This is the theme William Golding creates in his novel The Lord of the Flies from 1954. Golding takes his readers on a journey, where he shows what mankind is capable of doing through youngsters. The question is: can the young kids maintain civilization? 2.c. The Lord of the Flies is a novel about a group of young boys who crash on an island. While they’re stuck on the island they manage to establish some order and civilization by choosing a leader and by using a conch shell to arrange meetings between the boys. The established civilization crumbles as the book goes on because some of the boys can’t control their animalistic qualities. The boys waddle between the human instinct of savagery and the civilized ways of order, which they’re taught from home. Despite the fact that they try to establish order they become more and more drawn towards savagery throughout the book. The sow’s head and the conch shell are both symbols of power, but...

Lord Of The Flies Persuasive Quotes

...Soledad O'Brien states, “I've learned that fear limits you and your vision. It serves as blinders to what may be just a few steps down the road for you” (qtd.in “Soledad O'Brien Quotes”). Being apprehensive can lead one astray from his or her goals, and can cause complete change within a person. In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, a group of British boys are stranded on an island, without any any adults, after their plane crashes. Amongst the boys, some, such as Ralph, Piggy, and Simon are rational and still have their minds and bodies invested in being rescued. The other’s, under the command of Jack Merridew, have let rumours of of a beast, and a blind, burning, passion to hunt fog their minds leaving only the lust for savagery...

...A Guide to Writing the Literary Analysis Essay I. INTRODUCTION: the first paragraph in your essay. It begins creatively in order to catch your reader’s interest, provides essential background about the literary work, and prepares the reader for your major thesis. The introduction must include the author and title of the work as well as an explanation of the theme to be discussed. Other essential background may include setting, an introduction of main characters, etc. The major thesis goes in this paragraph usually at the end. Because the major thesis sometimes sounds tacked on, make special attempts to link it to the sentence that precedes it by building on a key word or idea. A) Creative Opening/Hook: the beginning sentences of the introduction that catch the reader’s interest. Ways of beginning creatively include the following: 1) A startling fact or bit of information  Example: Nearly two hundred citizens were arrested as witches during the Salem witch scare of 1692. Eventually nineteen were hanged, and another was pressed to death (Marks 65). 2) A snatch of dialogue between two characters  Example: “It is another thing. You [Frederic Henry] cannot know about it unless you have it.” “ Well,” I said. “If I ever get it I will tell you [priest].” (Hemingway 72). With these words, the priest in Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms sends the hero, Frederic, in search of the ambiguous “it” in his life. 3) A meaningful quotation (from the book you are analyzing...

...ENGLISH HANDBOOK -“Welcome to my evil lair…” -Mr. Braiman Brooklyn High School of the Arts www.mrbraiman.com http://handbook.mrbraiman.com “EVIL” Welcome to my evil classroom lair. In order to become full-fledged evil “minions,” you need to read this handbook carefully. It explains everything you need to know. “English,” as you may know, is shorthand for “English Language Arts.” Being that we are in an Arts school, but one where academics must and always do come first, it is important that we approach the subject as what it is: an art form. How does one study the arts? What exactly do we do when we study drawing, sculpture, music, or dance? Well, anyone who has studied the arts will tell you that studying the arts essentially involves two things: • Learning about, and developing an awareness of and appreciation for, existing works of art in that particular form; • Developing the skills and techniques associated with the art form, in order to create our own works. In the case of language arts, much like any other art form, we will be studying existing works of art (i.e., reading books, stories and poems), and developing the skills to produce our own (i.e., writing). That’s what English Language Arts is. We will also be preparing ourselves for New York State’s Regents Comprehensive Examination in English, which we’ll all be taking in June. This two-day, six-hour, four-part exam requires no specific knowledge or content, but it does require the skills to listen, read,...

...A, THE BRITISH ACADEMY SOMERSET HISTORICAL ESSAYS SOMERSET HISTORICAL ESSAYS By J. Armitage Robinson, D.D, Fellow of the British Academy Dean of Wells 1921 London: Published for the British Academy By Humphrey Milford, Oxford University Press Amen Corner, E.C. PRINTED IN ENGLAND AT THE OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS BY FREDERICK HALI, 76$ J 9 2/ PREFACE The writer of these pages makes no claim to be a historian, but he is concerned with the materials which go to the construction of true history. Occasionally he is led to revise the verdicts of historians on the ground of a renewed investigation of some isolated problem, or in the light of fuller information which has but lately become available. He hopes that he has done this with sufficient modesty. As a rule he has avoided direct controversy and has preferred a positive presentation of the revised position. He is well aware that when offered thus silently the corrections he desires to make are less likely to attract immediate attention than if he directly challenged fallacies which shelter under honoured names. But he writes from mere love of the subjects to which he has been drawn by the circumstances of his position and by local patriotism ; and he has experienced more than once the temporary blindness pro- duced by the dust of conflict. On the other hand he asks for criticism, ...

Bloodlines of the Illuminati

...Bloodlines of Illuminati by: Fritz Springmeier, 1995 Introduction: I am pleased & honored to present this book to those in the world who love the truth. This is a book for lovers of the Truth. This is a book for those who are already familiar with my past writings. An Illuminati Grand Master once said that the world is a stage and we are all actors. Of course this was not an original thought, but it certainly is a way of describing the Illuminati view of how the world works. The people of the world are an audience to which the Illuminati entertain with propaganda. Just one of the thousands of recent examples of this type of acting done for the public was President Bill Clinton’s 1995 State of the Union address. The speech was designed to push all of the warm fuzzy buttons of his listening audience that he could. All the green lights for acceptance were systematically pushed by the President’s speech with the help of a controlled congressional audience. The truth on the other hand doesn’t always tickle the ear and warm the ego of its listeners. The light of truth in this book will be too bright for some people who will want to return to the safe comfort of their darkness. I am not a conspiracy theorist. I deal with real facts, not theory. Some of the people I write about, I have met. Some of the people I expose are alive and very dangerous. The darkness has never liked the light. Yet, many of the secrets of the Illuminati are locked up tightly simply because secrecy is a way...
