This was achieved by allowing users to create, maintain, and monitor a website dedicated to their cause, as well as to link it with social media and email (GoFundMe, 2010). This application offers a broad array of uses, from gathering donations for a sick family member to getting help paying for college tuition. While anyone can start a collection for something as selfish as buying a new sports car, it is primarily used for charitable causes and upstart businesses. This application is also unique in that if a monetary goal amount is not achieved for the stated cause, all monies are returned to those who donated using the all-or-nothing rule (GoFundMe, 2010). The most significant changes this brought about for users is allowing people to obtain funding outside of traditional means. In today's economy and bank market, it is next to impossible to be granted a business loan without the backing of other substantial investors. This was evidenced in the fact that they closed down stores in high crime areas that are also highly populated areas. Instead of closing these stores if a healthy relationship with the community was developed and maintained these stores would likely have not lost money and would have instead thrived. Secondly by only carrying high margin health conscious and organic products the company may be alienating the lower income areas. ...My field site project was helping victims of the Valley Fire that happened this past summer. Hundreds of houses and buildings were burned displacing many people, their families and their animals. It was a devastating loss for the community. It’s amazing how people in a community come together to help each other when a loss like this happens. There were many organizations that helped with the Valley Fire Victims during this time of need. Along with the Red Cross, the Redwood credit Union was accepting donations at any of their North Bay or San Francisco branches. Tri Counties Bank made an initial donation of $10,000 and was also accepting donations online or at their Lake and Napa branches. The Santa Rosa Birth Center was accepting baby clothes, wipes and other supplies for children. The Lake County Animal Care and Control was assisting in providing shelter to any displaced animals. They had to close two stores that were not making any money due to the crime rate in the area the stores were located.
