Araby:
In James Joyce’s short story, “Araby,” an anonymous young boy narrates his attempt at abandoning an austere existence in exchange for a more exciting lifestyle; his opportunity arrives in the form of Mangan’s sister, whose charm persuades the narrator into traveling to the bazaar. Throughout the story, Joyce incorporates contrast in his setting to display polarizing moods. The intricate descriptions of the setting emphasize the narrator’s monotonous life in his neighborhood, the change in perspective caused by his love, and the heavy symbolism behind the closing bazaar. Joyce begins his story with descriptions of the lifeless street on which the narrator lives, creating a despondent mood. In the opening sentence, the narrator states that the street is quiet, “except at the hour when the Christian Brother’s School set the boys free” (1). This depiction not only asserts the generally desolate atmosphere of the setting, but also suggests the narrator’s mundane life in his neighborhood. He goes on to note the uninhabited house at the end of the street, along with other houses that “gazed at one another with brown imperturbable faces” (1). The portrayal of the houses as having “imperturbable faces” conveys the uneventfulness of the narrator’s life. Everyday, the narrator and his friends run through the “dark muddy lanes behind the houses,” to the “dark dripping gardens,” into the “dark odorous stables” (1). Here, the repetition of “dark” depicts the dullness and bleakness of the setting, which furthers the despondent atmosphere. His life is fettered by monotony, as he and the neighbors are stung by cold air and the houses grow sombre as they play outside. Employing distant and hopeless diction, Joyce succeeds in creating a dreary mood, ultimately portraying the narrator’s inability to escape from his stodgy life.
In contrast to the bleak atmosphere established in the beginning, the mood changes upon the presence of Mangan’s sister. The narrator’s daily searches through the front parlour window for Mangan’s sister strike his heart with excitement. Blinded by infatuation and, physically often, by tears, the narrator’s outlook lifts whenever he sees her. Suddenly, desolate streets become “flaring streets,” and his senses become acute: “We walked… jostled by drunken men and bargaining women, amid the curses of labourers, the shrill litanies of shop-boys who stood on guard by the barrels of pigs’ cheeks...” (2). Joyce vividly creates depth to the setting through copious details and sensory imagery, ultimately portraying the shift in the narrator’s perspective. Moreover, Joyce exemplifies sound to further contrast moods. Silence encompassed by shadows and darkness juxtaposes the “shrill litanies” and “nasal chanting” that, “converged in a single sensation of life for me” (2). His sensations that are aroused by her image follow him, “even in the places most hostile to romance,” bringing optimism to his melancholy. Through juxtaposition of atmospheric setting, Joyce clearly illustrates the narrator’s enamored perspective, empowering the sister’s character and filling the narrator with false hope. When the narrator arrives at the bazaar, the morose tone returns, accentuating the theme of vain and obscured love. While Araby is vital to the setting, it is also symbolic of the narrator’s unconditional desire for Mangan’s sister. When he finally speaks to his love, he becomes euphoric. The all-encompassing silence is broken by the cry of Araby in which his “soul luxuriated and cast an Eastern enchantment” (2). Through this elation, Joyce illustrates the narrator’s pounding desire and anxious hope. However, his angst soon turns to unrest as time passes with no sign of his uncle: “I sat staring at the clock for some time and… its ticking began to irritate me” (3). Here returns the bleak mood through “high, cold, empty, gloomy” (3) rooms. Though after an “intolerable delay,” he boards a train that “crept onward among ruinous houses and over the twinkling river” (4). Joyce’s juxtaposition of “ruinous houses” and “twinkling river” in the scene draws a parallel to the narrator and Mangan’s sister; the narrator’s dark soul is enraptured by the illuminating light that radiates from his love. Upon arrival at the bazaar, he is again immersed by the hall’s darkness and silence, “like that which pervades a church after service” (4). Remembering his task, he visits one of the last open stalls and sees jars that “stood like eastern guards at either side of the dark entrance…” (4). The image of lined-up guards in identical poses provokes a sense of banality resembling his life. The narrator leaves the vacant hall with disappointment and forfeited love, signifying that his lifeless reality is impossible to overcome and his desires are in vain. Three settings epitomize the distinct states of the narrator: the neighborhood his satisfaction with a prosaic life ; the time with Mangan’s sister his fantasy of a glamorous lifestyle; the bazaar his recognition of being helpless when it comes to his endeavour at discarding his life of insignificance. Regardless of his former ecstasy with both Mangan’s sister and the bazaar, both dissipate in their initial appeal. Joyce punctuates on the ineptitude of the narrator in changing his lifestyle. Even when the narrator’s head brimmed with thoughts of Mangan’s sister, Joyce underscored the dejection of the surroundings. The narrator, no matter how desperately he struggles, remains incapable of departing his dull life, and finally surrenders to this truth.

...Random Drug Testing: Waste of Time Her grades fell. She was always tired. She never seemed to be able to focus at school. Classes she used to be interested in became utterly mundane. Friends she used to care about became replaceable. She stopped spending time with her family. She sat on the bench at every soccer game instead of becoming the star player her coaches thought she could. This is what addiction to drugs can do to a young person’s life. Addiction can take away everything that once made that young person happy. The only thing that matters anymore is the drug, getting high, and getting higher. It is a horrible and tragic thing that destroys so many young lives. Some people think that in order to prevent these situations, the best solution is random drug testing. But this is not a reasonable solution whatsoever. Many more students are using and selling drugs as they roam around the campus, but will never be “caught” with such a fickle and illusive process. Random student drug testing is not a plausible solution for the drug problem in public schools; it is unreliable and it infringes on the lives of those students involved. Those who support random drug testing argue that the growing trend of drug testing a small population of students in a school is effective at attacking the drug abuse problem, because fewer students will use when there is an obvious consequence (Drug Testing in School Activities 2). ...Fascism in Germany The Holocaust was the mass murder or genocide of Jewish people, homosexuals, gypsies, blacks, and other minority groups. When the Holocaust is brought up, the most common question I’ve heard is “how did the German people get away with this, and why did anyone support them?” By the time the holocaust took place, a precedent to anti-Semitism was already historically present. In the late 19th century and early 20th century there was a strong presence of social Darwinism and a eugenicist world view, which declared certain types of people to be biologically better than other inferior groups. After the great depression hit Germany, it led to the idea of euthanizing the mentally ill, or physically disabled to save costs across the country. This opened the idea of euthanasia as a way to solve any problems with unwanted or undesirable people. By the time the Nazi party came to power the idea to preserve the valuable people, and rid the world of undesirable people was already common among society. Hitler was very open about his hatred for the Jewish people, but was careful to proceed slowly while introducing the hatred to fellow members of the Third Reich and other German citizens. It started with limits for the Jewish people, such as careers they could have, places they could go, assets they could have or obtain etc… Then the introduction of the Jewish Ghetto’s took place, to separate the unwanted people from the non-Jewish Germans. Several families would be forced...

...against the group happened when I was in college. I worked at clothing store at the local mall. One of the requirements for working there was that you had to wear the clothes that were sold there or clothes similar to them. After working there for a month or so I stumbled upon a few of the girls taking clothes off the shelf and putting them in the back room. I was then told that sometimes the girls there would “borrow the clothes and wear them to work in that day and then put them back on the shelf for customers to buy. I did speak up and tell them I thought it was wrong. They then informed me that even the manager of the store did it. That she would even get merchandise and take it home and keep the tags there and pay for some of the stuff a little bit along. I was in shock. I proceeded by calling the home office and calling the district manager and reporting the issue. A few weeks later the district manager came in the store. I was then fired. All the girls told the district manager that I was causing arguments within the group and I was a trouble maker. I did find out later that the home office did their own investigation in the store and all of the girls even the manager ended up getting fired. Even though I was fired from the job, I felt good about doing the right thing. I could have easily conform to the group for the sake of my job but due to my ethical beliefs I could not do...

Moving to a Different Country

...Steps to Moving to a new country Mayar Lampkin Everest University Ever wonder what it is like to move to a new country? Well wonder no more I will tell you. Moving to a new country can be fun and exciting adventure but it takes a lot of work and planning. Before you go and experience the new culture make sure you do research on the country. Another is to make sure you have the right paper work and documentation. The last step is to make sure you pack up essentials. It sounds like a lot and hard work but in the end it is all worth it. Doing research about the country you will live in is very important because you will be informed about the cultures and customs of the country. Also researching what cities are safe to live in and what cities are dangerous is good way of keeping yourself safe and out of trouble. Make sure to research living situations is it mostly apartment/condo living or is it houses? Knowing that information is good for when you are packing because you will know how much space you will have. A good way of research is finding a group on a social media website and asking them questions about the country and living situations. This step will be the most important step out of all three. Having the right paperwork and documentation is very important or you can get in serious trouble and or road blocks along the way. Making sure you know what you need is important. For example if you do not already have a passport make sure you apply for one right...

...20 September 2011 Topic Proposal The topic that I am using from the Affluenza book is Stuff Wars at the Airport on page 35. The angle that I am approaching this topic is from an airport employee stance. I worked at an international airport in several different capacities and think it provides a unique perspective. My guiding questions will be the basic such as: * What is the topic? * Why has this topic been chosen? * What is the focus of the topic? * How is the perspective and understanding conveyed to the reader? The concerns for this topic are the type of information that can be found other than personal experiences but believe that resources can be found in several areas on the internet, online databases, and library. Deciding on how specific is another concern, but believe that staying within the confines of the stuff wars specifically at the airport will keep the topic within the boundaries of the project. It is difficult to determine the time frame it will take to research the topic. It will take approximately two weeks to come up with an appropriate thesis and outline for the project. It could take two weeks to focus the topic on specific questions to ask but as soon as that is complete, it is easy to make a list of factual and interpretive questions for the reader to understand the research. After all has been completed, the research has a good foundation and is ready to start. To complete the essay will take one week to compile, rewrite, and finish...
