...My writing still needs to improve in word choice and transitioning, as I tend to use the same words repetitively, and struggle with making my writing flow smoothly. To make improvements, I will read other writing pieces to see how the authors built their sentences. This will help because most writers know more about balancing out their pieces. I believe that as you learn as a reader, your writing becomes smoother and easier to understand. I will also go through my writing more often to catch any words that I’ve used multiple times already. I don’t think I’ve developed independence as a writer, because I still struggle trying to write on my own. A lot of my writing is usually done when I’m supposed to for school, rather than when I want to. This causes my writing to seem bland and forced. I think to achieve that independence, practicing more and trying to just write down random thoughts will help. I usually don’t write because I can’t think of what to write about. Writing also seems to be hard for me because I don’t usually finish my writings (if I start a story, I’ll get bored of it and leave it unfinished). In my opinion, writing can be fun when you’re writing about something you’re passionate about and interested in. Other ways I could try to achieve independence as a writer is to set small goals for myself, so the writing process will be...

...Nasty Bits by Anthony Bordain is a book consisting of his random thoughts throughout all his trips. It is composed of 5 sections; salty, sweet, sour, bitter, and umami. Each one has a different tone to it even though they are all random. Only food and travel seem to connect the sections and stories together. Salty, sour, and bitter all seem to have an angry or annoyed tone to them. Sweet has stories that are a little better in tone and umami is just stories that he wants to talk about. The reader can tell Bourdain’s style in this book right away. It isn’t the traditional story book with one main focus. The style is telling the reader how he feels and telling little random stories. For being a non-fiction writer this style of book is interesting and effective. The reader can now understand how he feels during his trips. It allows readers to also see how his personality really is. In this book his personality comes out when he gets angry or happy about certain things. One noticeable thing about this book is his humor. It is kind of a dark humor and he makes fun of a lot of people. Some examples are when he is mad at fast food chains and calls them the evildoers (Bourdain 13). He also talks about a fat guy who takes up his whole seat and he complains about it (Bourdain 12)If he accepts any consequences with his humor than he can use it. He means what he says and people don’t need to be offended by what he says. Bourdain can probably take any mean jokes targeted at him so others...

...say I am me. I read manga, play football, can do Trig in my head. My personality is random and chaotic and my military back ground gives me little patience for stupid people and incompetence. If I like someone I joke and seem to make for good company, and I say what is on my mind. I am impulsive and aggressive, sarcastic and at times highly caustic, highly intelligent and often lazy. I am Me. My goals in this class are few. First off, My goal is to pass with an A or B+. Secondary to that would be to get back to writing like I used to, free writing and enjoying it. Slight problem with that is I am borderline dyslexic, and if one didn’t know that words isn't easy to spell. Beyond those I don't have much hope or goals for this class. What I hope won't happen, no it's not what most will say or the expected of writing. My fear for this class is to have the creative fire of the Muses stamped out by ridged guidelines and harsh and limited formal tedious papers. Most English classes limit writing so much that there is no point to it. What creates anxiety for myself, I have a chronic habit of procrastination. I do papers and assignments last minute. Then again looking back if I don't do it this way, my work suffers. Having the sword of Damocles hanging over my head brings out the best in my ability to write. Beyond that, random loud noises may trigger my PTSD. If a random bang happens and I dive under I desk, fair warning. As for level of effort I am...

...British inventor Edward de Bono coined the phrase "lateral thinking" as a counterpoint to conventional or vertical thinking. In conventional thinking people go forward in a predictable, direct fashion. Lateral thinking involves approaching the problem from new directions – literally from the side. De Bono defines the four main aspects of lateral thinking as: The recognition of dominant polarizing ideas The search for different ways of looking at things A relaxation of the rigid control of vertical thinking The use of chance There are dominant ideas in every walk of life – the assumptions, rules and conventions that underpin systems and influence people's thinking and attitudes. The idea that the Earth was flat or that the Earth was the center of the universe are examples of dominant ideas that polarized thought along set lines. Once the dominant ideas are in place everything else is viewed in a way that supports them. A paranoid person sees every attempt to help them as malevolent and manipulating. Someone who believes in a conspiracy theory will explain away any inconvenient facts as deliberately constructed by the powers behind the conspiracy. Most organizations have dominant ideas that polarize their view of the world. It is easy for us to criticize the makers of horse-drawn carriages who thought automobiles were silly contraptions that would never catch on. People now, however, are also the captives of established ideas. A Technique for Lateral Thinking A lateral...

...“What Is Your Writing Process” When composing, it is imperative that I am in the proper mindset. If I am not, I will remain at a standstill for hours. Being in the proper mindset the words and ideas come easily. Once I am comfortable I begin… 1. I must be in a quiet room. (Sometimes I play music for inspiration) 2. Have a cup of coffee or a cup of tea. 3. A clear mind. 4. Depending on the topic, I will read all required documentation, and do my due diligence on the topic if necessary. This allows me to process and formulate ideas in my mind. 5. I always scribble my first draft on a sheet of paper. This sheet will contain random thoughts and ideas that come to mind. It could be a word, a sentence, even a statement. As I continue writing...

...The internet; a wonderful place full of useless information, random pictures, and halfway decent homework help. First invented for the government to use, it now open to the entire world… and by the entire world, of course, I mean the United States of America. America, the greatest country in the world, has come up with the one most addicting thing that humans crave. We have become extremely addicted to social media. It has overtaken the human race like a zombie invasion from Mars. Sharing, posting, and liking have consumed America as a whole. More specifically: Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Snapchat. Each has its own addicting property and has its own clique: The Facebookers, Tweeters, Bloggers, and Snappers. All are a different species from one another, and for those who do not religiously use social media who cannot spot them in real life, you can use this to help find them. First, we have the Facebooker. Facebooker’s are very common, as most everyone has one. Facebook is a social media app that allows people to share photos, posts, and all around random crap with “friends” (we all know...

...going to use “empathy” for my word for today. But Elias, my ten-year-old firstborn son has taught me so much, I would be remiss to leave him out. Being a mother has changed me in ways I didn’t expect. It’s brought out all sorts of fears and anxieties, but it also helped me rediscover my creative, fun-loving side. I do things for Elias that I would not do for anyone else, even myself. He’s curious, enthusiastic, kind, smart, generous and forgiving. I could go on all day, but I will spare you too much of the proud mom talk. He makes me want to be a better parent, a better person. He teaches me more about forgiveness and kindness than I could ever hope to teach him. One day when he was in first grade, I was walking him to his classroom. If you have a boy, you know that when they see wide open spaces, this screams to them RUN! So instead of walking nicely beside me all the way to his class (and what boy does that anyway?), he ran ahead of me. When I finally caught up to him, I took him aside and lit into him with a lecture about walking with me, not running down the hall, yada yada yada. He said not a word the whole time, just stood there and looked at me. When I was done, he stood there for a second, looked right at me, and gave me a big hug before going off to class. Talk about feeling like a schmuck. Now that he’s ten, he does get mad at us more often, but it never lasts long. In five minutes, he’s back to normal, asking ten million random questions a minute. Kids have...

...1) The Question of Origin A Secularist believes that the entire universe and all of the living beings are based off of a random process accomplished without any divine guidance. They believe that the universe created itself and that it has always existed in one form or another and that it is always evolving. The Christian worldview believes that God created everything with a meaning and purpose. Nothing that was created by God was by chance as it was all planned and executed by God to please him. Secularists believe that everything has evolved over time with a scientific and naturalistic reasoning. In a Christian worldview, we do not believe that anything evolves but it can adapt with certain changing conditions. 2) The Question of Identity In Charles Darwin’s book “On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or The Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life” he states that “life forms had resulted from natural, random processes and not from the pre-design of an intelligent Creator.” Secularism believes that everything contains matter and it is continually evolving....

...language, but that is just the style that these kind of rappers use. In most of the song, they are trying to make other people look bad. They are “dissin’” them. Almost every sentence, has got a meaning in it’s own way. You can relate it to another song from the rappers, they’re past, they’re religion or something that has happen in their community. For example, the Game uses this following sentence ”sniff a fucking unemployment line of cocaine”. This maybe just sound like some random sentence, but the definition of it is actually, that in the economy class, which these rappers have tried to be in. There is an abundance of unemployed people. So the Game relates it to his large lines of cocaine, I personally think, the reasons he does that. Is because, he wants us to know, that he has been down that road. Tyler the Creator, uses three words, to make one sentence, which has a lot of meaning “Jesus, motherfucking Theresa”. Tyler is an Atheist, and he doesn’t mind being sacrilegious at all. Here, he makes fun of three holy, figures. Jesus, mother Mary and mother Theresa. Tyler actually refers to mother Theresa as, motherfucking Theresa. He does this to show that he is not afraid of God, and doesn’t have any fear for retribution. You could also take it to a whole new level, a much worse level. Some people see this sentence, ass Jesus’ mother (Mary), is having sexual intercourse with mother Theresa. “Jesus, motherfucking Theresa” Which would course, that Mary wouldn’t be able...

...bring order into it. An overt reference to this is Wilde's famous observation given through the voice of Miss Prism, describing her own three volume novel: "The good ended happily, and the bad unhappily. That is what fiction means." (The Importance of Being Earnest, Act II, Emphasis Mine). To Wilde fiction tried to take the chaotic quality of the unfairness of life and turn it right. Perhaps Poetry is pleasant to human ears because it attempts to the most random of things, human speech, and tries to bring it into some sort of order and pattern. Order and Pattern formed by Rhyme: Most students think that poetry is made when words are brought together which have the same kind of sound at the end of them, but this is only one type of the many kinds of rhyme. Old English poetry, for example, is works with alliteration, that is when a series of words begin with the same letter while remaining in beat. Meanwhile, the kind of poetry we are used to has end rhyme. Even this pattern can be slightly altered by having the end words match in two syllables [singing and flinging]. This is named feminine rhyme (why, I don't know), and while there are times that it appears in serious...
