Rape of Nanking (1937-1938) is a phrase used to describe the hell that broke loose in china’s capital city of Nanking. In December 1937, Japanese imperial army marched into China and proceeded to murder 300,000 out of 600,000 civilians and soldiers in the city (The History Place, 2000). The war is viewed as the single worst atrocity during the World War II era and was the most dangerous act against humanity. The violence and wickedness portrayed were far beyond what the human mind could imagine. Ranging from rape, decapitation, death by shots from a machine gun, burying of humans while still alive and burning of fellow humans, the situation would not have been any worse. All these acts went against human rights. With the above analysis, it is imperative to highlight the significant effects brought about due to the violation of human rights in the rape of Nanking and the extent to which cruelty among humans was displayed.
Japan’s uncontrollable desire for aggression, expansion and imperialism drove them to China. During the war, the Japanese believed that fighting was a way of fulfilling the role of Samurai, the ancient warrior whose fate was conquest or death. While they were fighting against China, the Japanese found plenty of conquest and death. Due to their very harsh training they believed this with their hearts (History.com, 2016). The Japanese saw the Chinese as people who were morally deficient and therefore they saw them as lesser beings. Before hitting Nanking, the Japanese first attacked Shanghai and to their surprise they were met with very stiff resistance, and this angered them because they thought they would take down China within three months. This resistance tampered with their timetable. Japanese soldiers were so angry with their defeat, and their appetite for revenge grew against Nanking. After defeating Shanghai, 50,000 Japanese soldiers marched on to Nanking where they met Chinese soldiers who were poorly led and loosely organized (The History Place, 2000). They defeated them, and the survivors retreated. After four days of fighting, the Japanese troops smashed into the city with orders to kill all captives. That is when all hell broke loose in Nanking. It followed a period of murder, rape and many other crimes that went against the fundamental human rights.
Rape of Nanking saw a lot of crimes against humanity in degrees that could not be imagined. With the order to kill all captives, Japanese soldiers committed a lot of atrocities against the Chinese. Every act they did was a violation of human right. The Chinese troops that retreated were assembled and taken to the outskirts of Nanking. That is where the cruel acts begun. The Japanese soldiers conducted bayonet practice on live Chinese prisoners that led to their death (EyeWitness to History, 2009). They decapitated the soldiers and displayed their head as souvenirs while other captives were shot at with machine guns and killed. Other Japanese soldiers preferred torching the captives after binding them on posts and soaking them with gasoline. Some were forced to bury each other alive or to dig their graves where they would also be buried after burying other dead bodies. All the above acts violated the basic fundamental human right to live. The Japanese troops assumed the role of jury, judge and executioner and the young Japanese soldiers were encouraged to inflict maximum pain so as to strengthen them for future battles and to erase any form of mercy in them (EyeWitness to History, 2009). After the destruction of the Chinese soldiers, the Japanese turned their attention to the women of Nanking.
The women suffered some of the most unimaginable pain ever. The women were dragged off to be gang raped. The age range did not matter as older women of over seventy years to young girls of eight years suffered similar experiences. The total number of women raped is estimated to be more than twenty thousand (The History Place, 2000). After the gang raping, the women were stabbed to death or shot so that they may never bear witness against them. The soldiers did not show mercy even to the pregnant women. They raped them and after that, they slit their bellies and tore out the fetuses. No one could imagine such evil could exist in the world. In some other instances they soldiers would break into houses and force the fathers to rape their daughters, sons to rape their mother and brothers to take their sisters. While all this happened, they forced the rest of the family to watch every single bit of these inhumane acts. Xia Shuqin, a survivor, said, “The soldiers burst into their house suddenly and gunned down the father without flinching.” By then she was eight years old. The men then raped all the women of the household leaving only her and her younger sister alive. The Japanese troops established Comfort Women System that enslaved women to prostitution. These women existed only for the satisfaction of the soldiers sexual desires. John Rabe (1988) wrote, "The mother of an attractive young girl called out to me and threw herself on her knees crying and said I should help her. Upon entering the house, I found one soldier lying on top of an underage girl who was crying hysterically. After yelling to the swine soldier in any language it would be understood, he fled from there, naked and with his pants in his hand.” As if all these were not enough, the Japanese troops supplied drugs to the Chinese people irrespective of age and an estimated 50,000 persons became addicted to drugs.
Summarily, the Rape of Nanking remains a significant part of the Chinese history over seventy years later due to many reasons. As much as it is in the past, it does not mean that it is forgotten. It is always omnipresent because almost every spot in Nanking is politically symbolic. Rape of Nanking serves as a metaphor for war crimes to the world. It acts as a reminder of the effects of war. Nations should look at what war brought on to China and think twice about it because innocent lives are lost in the process and lost lives can never be recovered. References Chen, P., C. (2015). ...THE FORGOTTEN HOLOCAUST: THE RAPE OF NANKING “Chinese men where used for bayonet practice and in decapitation contests. An estimated 20,000-80,000 Chinese women were raped. Many soldiers went beyond rape to disembowel women, slice off their breasts, and nail them alive to walls. Fathers were forced to rape their daughters and son their mothers, as other family member watched…” The Rape of Nanking, Iris Chang One of the most horrific events in human history, the Rape of Nanking is an example of one of the worst crime against humanity the world has ever seen. This event was so horrific that it is sometime referred to as the “forgotten Holocaust”. Beginning on December 13, 1937, Japan invaded China and the mass execution of soldiers and the slaughtering and raping of tens of thousands of civilians, whom peacefully surrendered, took place in contravention of all rules of warfare. This horrific event occurred due to the fact that for millenniums, the Japanese soldiers and civilians had a contempt feeling toward the Chinese and thought of them to be an inferior race of Asian people, much like the German policies against Jewish people in Europe. The Japanese soldiers...

Summary: The Rape Of Nanking

...Shockingly, what is often overlooked by Western society today, was that slightly more than a year prior to WWII (and the Holocaust), the Second Sino-Japanese war saw a horrifying episode of mass rape and murder. “The Rape of Nanking (or Nanjing)” happened over a period of six weeks, with the death toll estimates varying from as low as 40,000 to over 300,000 Chinese civilians/soldiers. Japanese soldiers tired from the war as well as “starved” of sexual interaction, preyed on and raped about 20,000 women (excluding the elderly and children). Applying Hsün Tzu’s view on the atrocity, helps explains the source of the evil behavior. To put it simply, Hsün Tzu believes the source of evil is the very nature of man. “There are words that invite disaster and actions that call down shame (Xunxi: Basic writings).” When the Japanese military permitted the murder and rape of the inhabitants of the city, the soldiers followed their nature and committed evil as they pleased. Doing away the proper military law, Hsün Tzu would make the claim, allowed the chaos and the soldiers loved the violence. Violence was not only a way to satisfy the evil...

The Rape Of Nanking Summary

...The Rape of Nanking” helped me to see a total different perspective about the participation of Japan during the World War ll. As you probably know I took some history courses that taught me the basic history about World War II, which resumed the participation of Japan with the detonation of the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. However, your book showed me that there was more information missing. First of all, the invasion that Japan started to plan to invade China. The maps gave me an specific idea of the invasion, they divided on three groups around Nanking. One was in Tai Hu a Lake between Nanking and Shanghai, while the other one traveled southern toward Nanking. The troops were commanded by Matsui Iwane (p. 37). Another important...

...The Rape of Nanking: The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II, wirttien by Iris Chang recounts the advancement of Japanese soldiers from Shanghai to Nanking during the war. The author inlcudes at the beginning of the bok that he main motive for writing about uch a gruesome event was the lack of coverage of it. Hardly anyone learns about the mass genocide of the Chineses in the far east. The beggining of the book is filled with statistics to give ample proof of the extent of the massacre of the Chinese. The Japanese soldiers followed a code of conduct while raiding the city that encouraged them to ravage literally everything in their path. Chang very clearly outlines the path the Japanese took to get to Nanking. She uses several personal accounts of Chineses citizens who lived through the ordeal to accurately describe the amount of destruction the Japanese caused. Chang uses a technique called the Rashomon perspective to narrate the events of fall f Nanking and the Chinese massacre. The first point of view she takes is the viewpoint of the Japanese military. The second is perspective is that of the Chinese victims...

Nanking Massacre

...seventy years since the Nanking atrocity of 1937-38. This event is better known as the “Rape of Nanking” or “Nanking Massacre” (Wakabayashi). Even today, there is no healthy dialogue between the countries of China and Japan in regards to the atrocity that occurred there so long ago. The last time that there were any concessions made in regards to the atrocities in China were during and after World War II. Much of the historiography has been limited due the amount of silence that has been present throughout the world. Because of this, research about the atrocity had just recently begun to surface. Due to this fact, there are many factors that are brought into question when looking specifically at a historical event, especially one that is tied to such brutal emotion. The authors I have chosen each attempt to explain why there has been such a delay in Nanking’s historiography and at the same time attempt to explain what actually occurred there in 1937-38. I selected three books for this paper. The first is The Nanking Atrocity 1937-38 by Bob Tadashi Wakabayashi. The book was released on the 70th anniversary of the fall of the Chinese city of Nanking to the Japanese army. The perspective offered is by majority non-American with the exception being two contributors. Wakabayashi discusses what lies at the core of bitter disputes over history, wartime victimization, and postwar restitution that hinder healthy Sino-Japanese relations to this day. The Nanking Atrocity, which is both...

There are many war tragedies we could discuss and debate over. But today we will look at two horrific tragedies and decide which is worse. The Bombing of Guernica or The Rape of Nanking. As tragic as both of them are the Rape of Nanking is worse. The Rape of Nanking is worse for a few reasons. It was far more personal for the victims, it was far more brutal and terrifying. With the Rape of Nanking you saw more of it happening, like as in you saw more of how terrifying a human being could be. Torturing and raping people like savages. This event, resulting in further degradation of Sino-Japanese relations, wrests the title of the most horrific atrocity from all other World War II theatres, excluding the Holocaust. Following this mass carnage, asking why such an event transpired is permissible. The Allies charged and executed Japanese General Iwane Matsui for his role in the Rape of Nanking [war crimes], because the Rape of Nanking was not the result of a breakdown of discipline, but the successful...

The Rape Of Nanking: Quote Analysis

...Oscar Wilde once said “Any fool can make history, but takes a genius to write it”, but how does one interpret this quote? This quote means anyone, regardless of their education, can create history as long as one does something significant. However, it does require someone who is well educated to record history. One needs to be well educated in order to avoid bias, and document down all important events as accurate as possible. For example, many Japanese soldiers went down in history as a result of The Rape of Nanking, but Japan does not educate their population about The Rape of Nanking. The majority of the Japanese soldiers were poorly educated compared to today's standards, but they were still able to create history. Japan not educating...

...20th Century Genocides The Rape of Nanking The Rape of Nanking was the invasion by the Japanese imperial army in December 1937, which marched into China’s capital city of Nanking and proceeded to murder 300,000 out of 600,000 civilians. Three reasons contributed to the attack. One reason was that the attack was preceded by a tough battle in Shanghai that began in summer 1937. Another was that the Japanese wanted to eliminate all surrendered soldiers, who were considered with utter contempt, therefore unworthy of life. The last reason was the stubborn resistance by the Chinese troops, which upset the timetable, with the battle dragging through the summer into late fall. All these factors infuriated the Japanese and whetted their appetite for the revenge that was to follow at Nanking. Senior members of the Japanese high command bearing direct responsibility for the mass atrocities in China included the Emperor Hirohito, who made all the military decisions, including the one to invade China in 1937. The motivations for these attacks were simple: revenge. Through a span of 6 weeks, Japanese soldiers gang-raped more than 20,000 females (with some estimates as high as 80,000), then stabbed them to death with bayonets or by gunshot so they could never bear witness. Those who were not killed on the spot were taken to the outskirts of the city and forced to dig their own graves, large rectangular pits that would be filled with decapitated corpses resulting from killing contests...
