Art and Empathy

...Kenny Smith April 20th, 2003 The role of men in society has been a vital. Men were subjected to the same inhumane and horrifying events that happened during the Holocaust. When one thinks of a man, you think of father, solider and other manly things. A great deal of pride comes along with being and man. Along with pride, testosterone, intensity, and all sorts of other factors key into the characteristics of men. However, the Holocaust completely stripped men of most of these characteristics. The Holocaust did not allow men to be men. Holocaust art, the “Tale of the Sprinter” by Sudeep Pagedar, and Vladek Spiegelman in the memoirs Maus by Art Spiegelman are examples of how men suffered during the Holocaust and the amount of empathy produced from the suffering of these men. Empathy is the ability to see something from somebody else's point of view and to walk a mile in their shoes if you will. Men are very prideful individuals who are very dominating members of society. The atrocity of the Holocaust has been displayed and expressed through various pieces of art and literature. Famous Holocaust painters like Felix Nussbaum have expressed this atrocity through art. Felix Nussbaum was a prisoner at Auschwitz who died there in 1944. The image to the right is one Nussbaum’s paintings that survived the Holocaust. Besides the man sitting on this wooden box, you see two other men in the rear who appear to be using the bathroom. The condition that these men were forced to live in...

Hawthorne Plastics, Inc.

...Hawthorne Plastics, Inc. Hawthorne Plastics, located in Hawthorne, California, specialized in the fabrication of plastic parts as a subcontractor to companies marketing plastic products, such as manufacturers of toys, kitchenware, fishing tackle, etc. Most of its production involved the molding or extrusion of plastic raw materials and over half of its production was for two major manufacturers of toys, located nearby. The vast majority of its customers were located in Southern California, with a few in Arizona, Nevada, and Northern California. In its market area the company was known for its high quality, low cost products. Its low cost was based on extremely efficient production methods, so efficient that on some items it produced at prices lower than the costs of the company for which it was subcontracting. Other items were produced for companies lacking their own production facilities. Still others (about 40% of total dollar volume) were produced as “overflow” for companies whose own production facilities were operating at capacity. On October 10, 1968 Hawthorne had just signed a contract to deliver 100,000 lbs of plastic strapping to the David F. Pynes Strapping Co., located in nearly Gardena, California. Pynes produced and sold a line of plastic strapping, the fastest growing part of which was used for bundling such items as magazines and newspapers. Plastic was rapidly displacing bailing wire in this segment of the strapping market. The cost of wire and plastic were...

...1. As completely as possible, explain the supply chain for Zara -- from raw materials to consumer purchase. 5 pts. Zara makes 40% of its own fabrics and produces more than half of its own clothes. Work that has to be contracted out is done by local companies to maximize time efficiency. Zara stocks all raw materials/ fabric, cuts its own fabric and contracts the sewing to local companies. By stocking the raw material, Zara cuts down on time for getting end product to consumers. Having all this material and labor done locally to include stocking end product and shipping via jets, to distant locations and by truck to local locations, has streamlined the logistical process for Zara and is a role model for new businesses. 2. Discuss the concepts of horizontal and vertical conflict as they relate to Zara. 4 pts. Horizontal conflict is conflict that occurs among firms at the same level as opposed to vertical conflict which occurs between different levels of the same channel. Zara has minimal vertical conflict due to headquarters receiving data from individual stores where 300 professionals carry out the designs. Individual store managers spot trends, send data to Zara headquarters and "shazaam" a new design is on the market sometimes in less than two weeks. This is a prime example of teamwork at its best and shows in Zara's bottom line profits. Zara's approach to design is closely linked to their customers. Ops Game

...Simulations Games And Experiential Learning in Action, Volume 2, 1975 OMSIM: AN OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT GAME George A. Johnson Idaho State University Thomas E. Hendrick University of Colorado INTRODUCTION This paper describes a new game oriented towards a production/ operations management environment called OMSIM [4] (Operations Management SIMulation). The authors have been developing and refining OMSIM for the past three years and are currently subjecting it to extensive classroom testing on over 400 students in nine course sections taught by four different instructors at the University of Colorado. The early responses from students are gratifying; most say that it is challenging, realistic, properly frustrating, and provides an integrating decision making experience. Our stimulus to build OMSIM was not caused by the absence of several excellent games which emphasize production/operations decisions; pedagogical simulators in this area have been commercially available for about six years. PROSIM [3] and The Decision Making Game [2] both appeared in 1969. A year later JOBLOT [1] was published, with PROSIM V [5] following in 1971. Having utilized [2], or attempted to utilize, [1], two of these games at the University of Colorado and reviewing the structure of the other two, we would characterize The Decision Making Game and PROSIM as games of beginning to moderate complexity, with JOBLOT and PROSIM V being classified as complex. GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF OMSIM OMSIM has been designed...

Make to order (MTO) The business strategy used by Eastern Gear, Inc. is Make-to-order. In a nutshell, this meant that products are built according to customer-dictated blueprints. The beginning construction of a product only after the design is confirmed represents longer downtime between order and readiness of ordered goods as compared to an organization which operate in a more conventional manner of selling template, mass produced products which are readily available at point of purchase. Adding on to the fact that customers usually do not pay in full during initial placement of order, this may cause cash flow retardation. Furthermore, customers with heavy considerations with regards to the time factor may be put off by the waiting time. 2.2.
