The movie about Genie goes to show how important a child's development is and how significant others play a huge role in a child's social and developmental stages of its life as a child. While Genie didn't experience any interaction with her parents, peers or even experience any type of relationship with anyone because she was locked in her room by herself she didn't get to experience anything in her childhood which is very depressing.
Genie suffered from a lot of conditions such as The Piaget stages of Development where she suffered from sensorimotor stage where the level of human development was of an individual experiences the world through their senses, which takes place in the child’s first two years of their life. Also preoperational stage where a human develops their first language and other symbols at the age of two.( Macionis) Next the concrete operational stage where human development takes place in an individual first sees causal connections in their surrounding between the ages of seven and eleven. Finally the formal operational where from the age of twelve and into a young adult the development of an individual to think and abstract and to critically think. (Macionis) Where I feel Genie really suffered from being isolated in her room and not being able to experience any of these life stages in her life and I feel if she did she would have had more of a chances to make it to grade school and be able to talk. Throughout these important are during the childhood and in the years Genie was locked and isolated in her room. In the textbook there are a couple stories about Anna and Isabelle that were in the same situation as Genie but no isolated for a long period of time like her. I feel is if Genie would have been found in a shorter amount of time than thirteen years she could have had a lot more progress and it wouldn’t have been so

Re: Hello Class

...In his new York times essay “where sweatshops are dream” writer Nicholas D. Kristof makes a number of points regarding what he sees as an adverse effect of labor standards compliance on the economic development of low-income countries that we feel require some clarification and comment. His purpose in this essay is to let people know that sweatshops can help people. Kristof assumes his readers are Americans that are repulsed by the idea of importing products made by barely paid barely legal workers in dangerous factories. By establishing his credibility, building his case slowly, and appealing to both logic and emotions, Kristof succeeds in writing effective argument. Most of us think that we make our decisions based on rational thought. However, Aristotle points out that emotions such as anger, pity, fear, and their opposites, powerfully influence our rational judgments. Due to this fact, much of our political discourse and much of the advertising we experience is directed toward moving our emotions. Kristof appeals to pathos by using words or images designed to move readers and appeal to the reader’s emotion. Emotional appeals can use sources such as interviews and individual stories to paint a more legitimate and moving picture of reality or illuminate the truth. “The miasma of toxic stink leaves you gasping, breezes batter you with filth, and even the rats look forlorn.” “Many families actually live in shacks on this smoking garbage.” This examples show how Kristof creates...

Hello Kitty and Dear Daniel - Why They Appeal to Such Broad Segments in Asia.

...Happy Meal promotion by McDonalds in Singapore in 2000 where McD’s customers could buy a Hello Kitty or Dear Daniel doll for $2.60 Singapore dollars caused such a frenzy (and a ruckus too) that it has caught the interest of both the media, global marketers and academics alike. In the end, this Hello Kitty McToy promotion increased the interest and sales for McDonalds; but with a different consumer; and not the intended target group - the prepubescent girls and boys! The reasons for this unexpected and overwhelming appeal for this McToy campaign in Singapore and the rest of Asia can be postulated to the following. They are however divided into two categories – the first covering the Asiatic region in general; and secondly, specifically to the Singapore market only: A) Across Asia: i. The Growth, Charge and Impact of the Kawaii Concept: Kawaii is a key concept that characterizes the modern Japanese culture. Literary translated as “cute” in English or figuratively as “things that are desired”, this culture originated with the 15 to 18 year old girls in Japan. Soon, marketers and advertisers in the fashion, publishing and the cute-little-gadgets industries recognizing the wide potential and appeal of this niche segment began to leverage on it. As this market segment is typified by the characteristic “not how much they spend” but “it’s that they all buy the same things”, hot items (like Hello Kitty) when caught by the wave can easily reach 100% market penetration in weeks! Sorry for Disturbing You

...”Sorry for Disturbing You” By Richard Knight A A common perception of our society is that friends come and go, but you will always have your family for better or worse. Sadly that does not count for all. In the short story, “Sorry for Disturbing You,” we meet one of those who are not as lucky as some of us are. The short story, “Sorry for Disturbing”, is written by Richard Knight. He is bringing men’s generally incompetence of showing their feelings and how we are handling these people and communication into focus. The composition is mainly chronological. It starts in medias res as Ian reflects over his meeting with Michael Phelps. This is the only place where there is a breach of the chronologically time line. The story spans over a couple of hours, from the moment Ian opens the door to when he returns home to his wife and daughter, Karen and Corinne. It is told by a third person limited narrator as we only get an insight view on Ian thoughts. This means that there is no outer description of Ian, but the reader is able to follow his inner life. It also means that the portrait of Michael is made based upon Ian’s perception of him and how he appears in the dialogue. Michael Phelps, the other narrator, suddenly shows up really drunk and confused at Ian’s doorstep – claiming to know the previous owners of the house, Edie and George Higham. Ian, the other main character of the story, finds this bothersome and wonders why Michael seeks for help when he could...

Sorry for the Loss

...Sorry for the Loss “Sorry for the Loss” is a short story, written by English writer Bridget Keehan in 2008. It is written in third person, from the main character’s point of view. The main character is Evie, who works at a prison as a Catholic chaplain. The story starts in media res, with the sentence “Evie has to tell Victor his Nan is dead.” We get no background info about Evie or the prison; we just go straight into the story. As the title indicates, there is a loss in this story. The loss is an inmate’s (named Victor) Nan, who is dead. Victor is a young and good looking boy, and when Evie goes to his cell to tell him about his Nan, she immediately feels sorry for him. Compared to Evie, who is very religious, and likes to say prayers, whenever she has some spear time, Victor isn’t that into religion. Sure, he is a Catholic, but he is also interested in learning about other religions as well. The atmosphere in the prison intimidates Evie, and she doesn’t like to be there because of all the loud noises. She is a bit scared of the inmates, because she doesn’t understand how they can do such a thing, which has led them into prison. She has her religious morals, but they don’t. When Victor gets the news about his Nan’s death, he doesn’t seem to care. Instead he is looking at the pigeons flying around outside his window. They are politely making small talk, until Evie leaves. She doesn’t understand why he didn’t showed any emotions, when she told him about his Nan...

Japanese popular culture is also portrayed through physical forms such as products, celebrities, personalities, maid cafes and may others. SMAP is a Jpop boy band with immense popularity from Japan and is one form of Japanese popular culture. Darling-Wolf suggests that SMAP's popularity is due to its careful construction of appeal and masculinity. SMAP is not well-known for their talents in singing, but rather for depicting Japanese personalities. Darling-Wolf refers to SMAP members as 'life-sized' pop idols (Aoyagi) who personifies a typical Japanese boy or girl which allows audiences to relate to them well. This is supported by Yano's research which highlights that fans form emotional bonds and connections with celebrities due to their charisma and personalities. Darling-Wolf that SMAP is popular is due to its intertextuality from appearing in TV shows, movies, talk shows and many more media forms which allows fans to feel a proximity or closeness. Intertextuality allows SMAP to be able to portray their personalities better and reach out to more audiences, which enables them to connect with their audience. Darling-Wolf argues that SMAP's fame is highly due to its constructed appeal of masculinity, which creates the 'perfect female fantasy'. Derivatives

...Case Question 1 In his 2002 letter to shareholders, Warren Buffett referred to financial derivatives as the "financial weapons of mass destruction" and a ticking "time bomb" waiting to explode. His perspective may well be derived from his own experience with some derivative positions his company, Berkshire Hathaway Inc, inherited from the $22 billion purchase of General Reinsurance Corporation in 1998 (Berkshire Hathaway Inc, 2002). Unable to find an agreeable counterparty to buy the General Reinsurance Securities, a subsidiary of General Reinsurance Corporation that deals with derivatives, Buffett decided to close it which required him to unwind the subsidiary's derivative positions. The complexity of the derivatives positions took him years to complete the unwinding and at a pretax loss of $173 million for General Reinsurance Corp in 2002 (Berkshire Hathaway Inc, 2002) and $409 million in cumulative pretax loss as of 2008 (Berkshire Hathaway Inc, 2009). He likens the unwinding process to entering hell, stating that derivatives positions were "easy to enter and almost impossible to get exit" (Berkshire Hathaway Inc, 2004). In 2002, trades in derivatives were growing rapidly in recent years and they pose a "mega-catastrophic risk" that could harm not only their sellers and buyers, but the whole economic system for the following reasons: 1. Mark-to-market accounting (Investopedia 2011) is a legal form of accounting for a venture involved in buying and selling securities...
