...MGT 218 Chapter 4: An investigation into how Business Process Re-engineering (BPR) and Lean concepts could improve the effectiveness of Sheffield University and give them a strategic edge. 4.1 Introduction The University of Sheffield (TUoS) is currently among the world’s top higher learning institutions, largely due to its high quality staff members and modern infrastructure. To maintain and improve its status among the world’s elite, it is fundamental for the University to understand and implement Business Process Re-engineering (BPR) to its existing processes. BPR can be defined as the fundamental rethinking and radical redesign of business processes to achieve dramatic improvements in critical, contemporary measures of performance, such as cost, quality, service, and speed (Hammer & Champy, 1990). This chapter aims to dwell deeper into how changing or adding on to existing processes and systems can benefit the University and its stakeholders 4.2 The Current State Of The University’s Systems and Processes In the past, many universities have restructured the way they ran their business. One good example would be the Montana State University in the United States, which in 2006 reviewed their old financial and administrative processes and subsequently identified areas for improvement. As a result, they managed to increase overall efficiency and eliminate unnecessary costs. The University of Sheffield currently runs SAP software, and have been doing so since 2007. One...

...known as Soccer in the U.S.) was and still is the most popular sport in regards to viewership worldwide. In 2006 it was estimated that the sport of football was played by more than 265 million people, and continuing to grow (These estimates were up from 2000, estimated 42 million). Profession leagues exist throughout the world and the most popular teams were in Western Europe. The history of modern day soccer dates back to 1863, although there was early evidence of soccer being played as a sport in China between the 2nd and 3rd centuries BC. In China, it was mentioned that people dribbled leather balls by kicking it into a small net. Recorded facts also support the fact that Romans and Greeks used to play ball for fun and leisure. (Jetzen, 2013). Background of Nike: Co-founded by Phil Knight (former University of Oregon Track Athlete) and Bill Bowers, initially under the name Blue-Ribbon sports in 1962. After a business relationship ended with their overseas manufacturer, they changed the name in 1972 to what is now known as Nike. In 1975 Nike signed its “first” of many big name athletes in Steve Prefontaine. A local University of Oregon track athlete who at the time who held every known track record from the 2k to 10k meters. (Please note that ultimately, Steve Prefontaine was #1 in his sport as this has meaning throughout the case to Nike’s overall strategy). By 1979 Nike owned 50% of the “running shoe” market share (As this was there focus). After taking the leap and going public...

...servant, and situa- tional. A review of the experiences of six leaders who embody these styles reveals that each mode of operating has its pros and cons; there is no sin- gle best approach. Being aware of one’s leadership style and that of others makes it possible to lever- age strengths and compensate for weaknesses and to properly match individuals to a particular role or task—for the good of the entire organization. ©C 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Whether they are involved in politics, corporate America, or a nonprofit endeavor, the style in which managers and other professionals exert their lead- ership can determine the outcome of their efforts. As the American businessman and political fig- ure Erskine Bowles said, “Leadership is the key to 99 percent of all successful efforts” (Kruse, 2012). But what is the best leadership style to use? There is no simple answer to this seemingly simple ques- tion. One’s leadership style depends on several fac- tors, including the personality of the leader, the or- ganizational culture (and the many subcultures that may exist within it), the personalities of the people to be led, and the overall state of the organization. Certainly, exploring the leadership styles that have proven to be successful in a variety of environments can help pinpoint those that might work best in in- fluencing people and bringing about positive orga- nizational change. What Is Leadership Style? The ASPIRA Association (2012) defines leadership style as: “a form...

...Coming up with creative ideas for photo taking can be challenging enough, but getting the lighting right can be even more challenging. Lighting contributes many different feelings and effects when it comes to pictures. It can change the image, the mood and even the point of the photograph. Back lighting, artificial lighting, and simple portrait lighting are just a few examples of all the different types of lighting that can be used in photography. The image above illustrates back lighting. http://www.vistaview360.com/photography/contre_jour.htm. Back lighting is when light is behind your subject and is directed at your camera. Lighting in back often creates silhouettes easily which is demonstrated above. When mixed with fog or different atmospheric conditions, this can increase the dramatic effect of the photo. This may take practice or multiple shots since “an over exposed (too dark) photograph can result when the light is coming from behind the subject or when the subject is against a much brighter background, such as the sky” (Freeman Ch. 3 Pg. 70). Silhouettes are not the only purpose of backlight photography. Backlight photography can be used to achieve many looks. This next image is another example of using backlight, which looks completely different. ...Part IV Katie Schulz Mrs. Polski Modern Problems May 2, 2013 Introduction~ Animal experimentation began in the early 3rd and 4th centuries BCE with the Greeks performing the first experiments on living animals. Ever since these early periods there has been a search to answer the question of whether animal testing is ethical. This question is proposed due to the suffering of animals during medical experimentation. Veterinarian, Peter M. Henrickson, found this to be the case in his experience during a veterinary class. The research began on Rodney a shepherd mix. “The first thing we did was neuter him, a seemingly benign project, except it took us an hour to complete the usual 20-minute procedure, and an anesthetic overdose kept him out for 36 hours. Afterward, he recovered his strength quickly and felt good” (Henrickson, Par. 4). They then proceeded to do an abdominal exploratory, opening his abdomen and then closing him again. “This was the first major surgery for any of us, and, with inadequate supervision, we did not close him properly. By the next morning, his incision had opened and he was sitting on his small intestine. Hastily, we sewed him up again, and he survived. But it was a week or more before he could resume walks he had come to eagerly anticipate” (Henrickson, Par. 6). After Rodney’s slow recovery they once again put him under anesthesia. “We broke his leg and repaired it with a steel pin. After this, Rodney seemed in almost constant pain, his temperature...

...examining this situation people can get self-awareness when trekking the back country in search of entertainment and adventure. In recent years the increment of people participating in winter events like snowboarding or skiing has created more and more accidents in which many people have lost their lives. In accordance with American Avalanche Association there have been 27 fatalities between December 2013 and May 2014 (American Avalanche Association, 2014). Also in accordance with this organization after 35 minutes, a buried victim has an only 27 percent chance of survival (American Avalanche Association, 2014). By reading this paper one will learn how to become aware on how to survive an avalanche and how to help other victims of avalanches. Another important aspect of survival is to remember when a situation like surviving an avalanche happens is to keep the faith. Avalanche Survival Is it possible to survive an avalanche? Avalanche survival depends on several factors: knowledge and/or experience, the right gear and luck. Self-rescue techniques and avalanche survival courses are other good options to keep in mind. About a year ago a woman survived being buried alive in an avalanche at the Alta ski area east of Salt Lake City. The woman survived because she deployed a special air bag and other skiers were able to rapidly dig her out. One of the rescuers, Joe Campanelli used an avalanche beacon and a probe to find the woman's location. She had been buried in several feet of...
