Ever since I started college some months ago, I have had the chance to meet amazing people that have taught me great things and certainly, Martha Salinas is one of them. I met her at a Bible Study group that is held in Spanish and we connected pretty fast. Martha is 19 years old but if you ever meet her, you will see that you cannot make assumptions of her based on her age. Martha was born in Chiapas, Mexico and was brought to the United States when she was a kid. Martha has spent majority of her time living in Decatur, Alabama. She graduated from Decatur High school and now she is studying her freshman year in Berea College. Martha plans to double major in Education and Child and Family Studies. Martha lives with her dad and she has an older sibling. The reason behind hanging out mostly with her sister is that she wanted to avoid the judgement that came from other students that saw her as a different individual because she is Hispanic. Salinas mentioned how in her school she was always classified as Caucasian because the system does not even count with a Hispanic option in most schools. I believe it is interesting to see how someone can be treated different from her look but categorized as the same within the system. Salinas describes her school years as usually constituted by, “one Hispanic in a room full of white people” which usually brought stares and judgments and she grew up feeling like she needed to prove them that even though she looked different she could do great things and she could fit
