...REACTION PAPER “FREEDOM WRITERS” By: Racel Emmanuelle R. Mendoza There is an obvious discrimination shown in the movie “Freedom Writers”, where everybody hates everybody and they got no choice but to live in a world full of pandemonium. Random cultural implications are shown in the movie. Where one has to accept his/her society since birth, or someone has to really join a gang to keep up and belong to a hood. In the case of the students in the movie, they are just simply hopeless and what they all just do is to keep raging flames in their hearts. Until one tough and undeniably smart professor came on their way to take action – Ms. Gruwell. As Ms. Gruwell came into the movie, I just thought that there will really be one person who will unexpectedly cross one’s life and lead you towards impunity. Same with the world or certain country where there is rampant chaos and a peacemaker leads to fight for the right. At first, Ms. Gruwell had dismay that she wasn’t able to understand everything. And because she thinks and considers the factors she sees in her current endeavor, she came up with a very unique plan that a usual professor wouldn’t think about. – FREEDOM WRITING. I guess, the maker of the movie wanted to disseminate how the therapy of writing one’s feelings comes into such a relief to those whose minds are insane and broken. This is a very good twist in the movie, where in cultural liberalism takes place. Series of difficulties are shown in the movie, and how brave Ms...

...Within the past decade, fanfiction has enabled community members to put their own ideas down on ‘paper’ for the world to read, comment on, and contribute to. Fanfiction is defined as stories written by members of a fandom that base themselves on a plot, canon, or different works that take the current story on a new path (Thomas, 2011). The most important part of fanfiction, however, is the interaction with the storylines and the dominant ideology. “While activities of fans may take many forms, writing stories deriving from one or more source texts has long been the most popular way of concretizing and disseminating their passion for a particular fictional universe” (Thomas, 2011). This freedom that community members within a fandom have to connect, create, and discuss are what makes fandom such a strong force in the digital world. The online world has opened up doors for fans no matter what age they are, what country they live in, or how talented they are as a writer (Schaffner, 2009). This is where the consumer fan versus creation fan comes into play because, just because you may not like to write, you can still read and interact with those that...

...Running head: ESSAY 6.1: THE STORY OF AN HOUR Essay 6.1: The Story of an Hour Jeremy Todd Macy ITT Technical Institute Essay 6.1: The Story of an Hour Freedom!!! Liberation!!! The idea of living your life for yourself, not others; it is something that we all dream of at some point in our lives, but how many of us actually achieve that? Whether we feel trapped in a job that we hate, a bad friendship, or a bad marriage, there is something inside us that yearns to be free. We long for that weight to be taken off of our shoulders. Kate Chopin’s The Story of an Hour takes us through these emotions, only to find out at the end that these emotions are fleeting, and then reality sets in. What will be discussed in this paper is the plot of the story and those feelings that are experienced, Kate Chopin’s life experiences and how that experience influenced this story, as well as my reaction to the story. The story starts off with Mrs. Mallard( we don’t know her first name) being told some distressing news. Josephine, her sister, is trying to relay this horrible news in the most delicate matter. Mrs. Mallard has severe heart problems, although she is young. Brentley, her husband, was killed in a train accident. She weeps, with “sudden, wild abandonment”, at the news (Woodlief, Study Text). She then sinks into an armchair, and begins to ponder the future. The sky opens up, showing the calming blue. Her horizons seem to broaden, she gets a feeling of starting over, fresh. She is still...

...decided to devote his powers of speech and prose to fighting it. Douglass wrote three biographies about his life as a politician, slave, and abolitionist. However, the historical value of these works does not remain as important as the quality of the works themselves. Frederick Douglass’ writing deserves recognition in the canon of great American authors, because his work meets the chosen criteria for inclusion in a collection of important literature. Douglass influenced many famous abolitionists with his literary works, and this impact, coupled with his desire to write an expose about oppression in America, makes him a winning candidate. Although his published works, mostly autobiographies, received much acclaim from abolitionists, this paper explores the quality of Douglass’s work from a literary standpoint. To fully appreciate the impact of Douglass’s autobiographies, we must examine violent period in which he lived. Douglass, born in 1818, grew up as a slave on Colonel Lloyd’s plantation in eastern Maryland. At the time, abolitionist movements started gaining speed as popular parties in the North. In the North, pro-slavery white mobs attacked black communities in retaliation for their efforts. By the time Douglass escaped from slavery, in 1838, tensions ran high among abolitionists and slaveowners. Slaves published accounts of their traumatic escapes, and their lives in slavery, mainly with the help of...

...Cultural Identity Stances of 20th Century Writers Throughout the past centuries many authors have taken stances on the societal happenings perspiring around them. Focusing around the turn of the 20th century, specifically the subsequent decades, the main dispute was between two concepts: assimilation versus cultural heritage. Assimilation is a controversial topic that some writers deemed necessary to live in a new culture, whereas others believed that expressing and retaining cultural heritage, or the mosaic idea, is essential. A specific poet and writer that supported the mosaic was Sherman Alexie. Like Alexie, countless others used poetry and literature as a call to action for their beliefs, whether it was assimilation, mosaic, or a mixture...
