...Media Reaction Lockett James SOC/315 Media Reaction The illegal immigration is the act of violating American immigration policies and laws by entering or remaining in the country without receiving authorization from the federal government. We have seen that immigration is a big issue here in the United States was as before it wasn’t an issue. The origin of illegal immigration was in the late nineteenth century. ❖ 1875 the federal law passed that no convicts and prostitutes are to enter the United States. ❖ 1882 President Chester Arthur allowed almost no Chinese immigrants in the United States. ❖ 1892 Ellis Island in New York was a federal immigration station that ended in 1954 in processing over 12 million legal immigrants that was to prove their identities. ❖ 1921 Congress passed a Quota law that only 357,000 immigrants a year are to enter the United States. By 1929 it was reduced to 157,000. ❖ In 2007 Edward Kennedy held a firm hold on the immigration reform that his supported while others tried to delay by hammering out more of the details on the bill. Edward Kennedy was one of the architects of the Immigration and Nationality Act in 1965. He was the United States Senators of Massachusetts and served almost 47 years and was known as one of his major players on the immigration reform. And what the immigration reform does is that it supports or not supports the primary numbers...

...Individual: Media Reaction SOC/315: Cultural Diversity University of Phoenix Abstract The views are many regarding the issue of immigrations and whether or not immigrants should be allowed within our borders illegally. Some politicians express that illegal immigrants should be sent back to their lands immediately; some say the illegal immigrants should be allowed to stay in this country, but pay back taxes. The religious groups express that the immigration issue is a human issue and the Bible has the answer as to how immigrants are to be dealt with. Although the views are different one thing remains the same immigrants are people looking for something better than where they are leaving and the United States seems to have what they are looking for. The Arizona Legislative Bill Number SB1070 was created as a way to legally deal with the influx of illegal immigrants that cross the borders daily. The rights of these individuals are very important and legislation must take that into consideration. The issue of immigration is not only a concern for the United States; it is an issue that affects the entire world. The historical framework of the illegal immigration issue began in the United States in the late 1800’s. The current issue began in 1882 when the industrialists began building the railroad that connected the United States and Mexico. The workers for the railroad consisted of undocumented immigrants that crossed the border just before the new train crossed the...

...Media Reaction SOC/315 Abstract I am a firm believer that education should be available to anyone who wants to continue their education after High School. But there is one issue that I do have a problem with and that is the state of California offering Financial Aid to “Illegal” undocumented students who have come into the country to better themselves. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think that they should be banned from doing so; I just think there needs to be a line that has to be drawn. During this article I am going to write I will point out some of the drawbacks I see from the “California Dream Act” the way it has affected my family directly and how it has prevented them from continuing their education and get to where they want to be in life. I believe every one is entitled to their opinions on anything that is brought up regardless of what the topic is. Financial Aid for Undocumented Students The “California Dream Act” states “An undocumented high-school graduate or GED recipient would be eligible to adjust to conditional lawful permanent resident (LPR) status if they have been physically present in the United States for at least five years and were younger than 16 when they first entered the country. (Immigration Policy Center, Para 6, 2010) I am all for today’s youth receiving an education and moving forward with their lives, but I have a problem when them receiving their education and continuing their lives gets in the way of my family...

In addition, Greece has received support financially more than the other states between 2007 and 2011. According to the courts in Europe, the human rights are not respected, as a result the Commission is monitoring human dignity. The treatments of the immigrants have been awful so as a result they have closed the worst camps. Incidents have shown that supervisors are let go due to their behaviors towards migrants. The Neo-Nazi Golden Dawn Party has also showed racism attacks towards the migrants. Migrants are still applying for asylum in Europe because of the Syria crisis. It shows that there have been 332,000 requests for asylum in Greece in 2012, which is higher than last year (European Social Policy, 2013). In the overview, it first started by simply informing its readers what the definition of immigrants actually is. According to the overview, immigrants are individuals who have left their country or area of origin to settle in another country or territory. It also told us what immigrant really was. When dealing with immigrants and immigration, there are two main categories for the reasons of their migration...

...Media Reaction Paper Jennifer Dockery SOC/315 9/5/2011 Shannon Burke, MA Media Reaction Paper Hispanic immigrants are handy scapegoats for the problems in local communities, from crime to overcrowded schools. Even legal immigrants are victims of this mindset, in spite of immigration not being the root cause or even a major factor in any of the issues. Immigration has always been an issue. Those making up the majority of the population are all immigrants from other nations, having descended from those who immigrated here over the course of the last 400 years. Some of the areas in which Hispanic immigrants are most numerous were at one point the property of the Hispanic nation of Mexico. Immigrants built this country, and certain segments of the immigrants have always been accused of ruining this country. Recently, Arizona passed a law, SB 1070, which requires the police to question the legal status of those they suspect are undocumented immigrants. Additionally, it sets the official immigration police as ‘attrition through enforcement’, stating that they intend to be so harsh that immigrants flee in fear. (Martinez, 2011). Currently, the law is on hold due to challenges by the US Department of Justice for usurping federal jurisdiction on immigration. However, the law has set a horrid precedent, one that has resulted in boycotts that are costing Arizona more than $330 million dollars over the next two to three years. (Martinez, 2011)...

...forever been an indispensable component of human nature. Whether we move back to the hard times of the Great Depression or come to the modern day’s society, we find a strong reflection of racialism everywhere. These aspects have been well reflected in the movie ‘Crash’. The movie ‘Crash’, released in 2005 was directed by Paul Haggis and written by Paul Haggis and Robert Moresco and won three Academy awards. The movie revolves mainly around the overlapping or interlocking events in the life of whites and blacks, rich and poor, cops and criminals, Iranians, Koreans and Latinos - everything defined ultimately by racism. The idea is that “moving at the speed of life, we are bound to collide with each other”. It is based on everyday racial reactions in the human society. How we react to situations adds hue to our perceptions of living life itself. All the people involved are guilty of the discrimination but sometimes through indifference, they rise above these. Assuming something about the person before us is rather a dominant feature in Crash. Crash describes a number of people with almost equal importance and shows the psychological inhibitions each of them has based on these narrowness of discrimination. The movie contains coldness, cruelty and pain, but finally unfolds to generate sympathy from general audience and an expectation that people would learn to share similar hopes and fears. As far as Crash is concerned, the symbolism revolves around that of the idea of a traffic crash...

...Jonathan Escalier Introduction to Mass Communication Reaction paper 1 A) How do we in contemporary society make use of mass media: transmission of culture selective exposure, source of information, entertainment, etc.? Contemporary society makes use of Mass Media in many ways. One example is the exposure of favored information through beliefs, attitudes, and decisions. Twitter a social networking site has brought many towards opinions of from many races on todays world event and celebrities. Twitter starts with a tweet and is then re-tweeted to several people to expose the trend. It also allows for a communication with celebrities and who is following whom in order to be a part of his or her’s opinions and be up to date with their daily activities. Another way that the contemporary society uses Mass Media is through commercials. Commercials are a great way of being able to influence what he or she is thinking and lead to a decision based on the commercial. For example, In sport games there will be a big amount of pizza commercials that allow the person if he has a group of friends over his house to order a pizza in hope that he does not miss a minute of the game. Lastly a good commercial on microwable foods will feature an emphasis on quality and how fast it is prepared. Stouffers lasagna is a popular dinner that feeds a family of 3-4. Companies like Red bull pay people to drink their energy drink in hopes to get an opinion of a new taste that they are testing such as Coca...

...Reaction Paper Regarding the Flow of Influence and Social Meaning Across Social Media Networks Mahalia Miller Daniel Wiesenthal October 6, 2010 1 Introduction One topic of current interest is how language and sentiments are transmitted in the blogosphere and how individuals affect the sentiments of those in their online sphere of influence. Therefore, the focus of this reaction paper is threefold: (1) to summarize four journal papers related to sentiments and influence, (2) to critique the methods and scope of the journal papers and (3) to brainstorm directions for the term project. 2 2.1 Literature review Java et al. 2006 Java et al. (2006) explore models that determine the blogs with the most influence on the Blogosphere. The paper defines influence as a link from blog a to blog b implies that a influences blog b. They further create an influence graph that weights edges by a function of the amount of links. This paper evaluates various heuristics, such as Pagerank, indegree, and greedy algorithm, to determine which blogs have the most influence on the Blogosphere. The analysis shows that PageRank is rather efficient and converges quickly. The paper also analyzes the effect of splogs, i.e. spam blogs. The results indicate that not removing splogs greatly impacts the accuracy of the influence models. As such, the paper uses some algorithms to identify splogs, and then, and only then, do the heuristics converge to within 70% agreement on the predicted number of influenced...

...Week 2 Reflection Angela Smith SOC/ 315 Mr. Richardson September 16, 2013 University of Phoenix Week 2 Reflection In week two we talked about how to explain the concept of culture is used to construct group identity. How to analyze the social concept of race. And also how to describe how behavioral and thinking patterns apply to diversity issues. We also went over are African Americans still experiencing racism? Racism can also be seen as a system of advantages based on race. It allows us to see that racism, like other forms of oppression is not a personal ideology of racial prejudice, but also a system involving cultural messages and institutional policies and practices as well as the belief of individuals. We went over inventing Hispanics and how particularly important for understanding the future of diversity in American Society. To be Asian in America. Asian Americans face the perception that they are all the same. We also talked about hate crime when offenders are motivated to choose a victim because of some characteristic. We also discussed prejudice which is a negative attitude toward an entire category of people. Discrimination is the denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups because of prejudice or for other arbitrary reasons. We also went over racial profiling and how any police initiated action based on race ethnicity, or national origin rather than the person’s behavior. In this...

The additional features improved the quality of service Facebook provides and made it easier to keep up with the latest happenings not only within our circle of friends, but also to our whole community. These advancements have helped some Facebook users to bridge the gap between them and their loved ones . But somehow, others ended up abusing it. The video of the “amalayer” girl in 2012 became viral in Facebook. It had been shared from one’s profile to another and received various reactions from different people may it be positive or negative. People also found social issues entertaining by means of making memes. Instead of taking these seriously and participating in sensible debates, some just tend to shrug these off. This study aims to know the reaction of people to negative Facebook posts and what particular actions they will take. We, as future media practitioners, should be careful in using social networking sites for we represent our network. The reputation of a network is always at stake whenever journalists post personal opinion about a particular issue. We are now in the 21st century wherein technology...
