...AED/202 Reading and Writing Development Sandy Mackey June 28, 2013 Kristen Weiss Reading and Writing Development As a future educator I believe that reading and writing is the utmost import thing in a child’s education. Without these two skills a child will not be able to succeed in school. For my essay, I chose two age groups that I want to teach; middle childhood, ages six through ten, and early adolescence, ages ten through 14. The reason I chose these two developmental ages is because I believe that children enjoy learning; they are like sponges, always trying to absorb as much as possible. The reading development in middle childhood children and early adolescent childhood children seem somewhat different. Middle childhood children start by identifying letters and matching letters with individual sounds, knowing what a word is, and interpreting spaces and punctuation are the earliest building blocks for reading skills (www.education.com). Early adolescent childhood children, usually do not have an issue with reading; they can identify vocabulary words in a book and sound out the words. Children of this stage usually enjoy reading. Writing skills for both middle and early adolescent children develop in the same way as their reading skills. Middle childhood children are more focused on what they are writing, their spelling, spacing, punctuation, and coherence has improved (www.education.com). As for the early adolescent children...

...Associate Level Material Appendix F Reading Strategies Worksheet Identify two reading goals, one short-term and one long-term. • Long-term reading goal: Become proficient and efficient reader • Short-term reading goal: Determine what reading strategies work for me and which do not. Write a 100- to 150-word response to each of the following questions: • How do you currently approach the weekly readings in the course? Currently my approach is a bit lazy. I will skim through each chapter and pick out the important parts. Those parts I will read, after reading a question I will go back to the reading and re read what I need to. I think I might have to reconfigure my approach and just read through the material the first time, take notes and use highlighting methods to comprehend the readings more. I find that the readings have been fairly easy so far and that may be giving me a false sense of confidence, so rather than being hit by surprise later I will be proactive and start using these methods now. • How might you incorporate three of the suggestions covered this week into your study time? I learned a lot about reading strategies and the best one I see that can be incorporated immediately is highlighting key sentences or phrases. I can also use the reading with concentration method, by removing myself from any and all distractions while reading I believe I will comprehend more information that I read. Last note taking and using flash cards...

...University of Phoenix Material Reading Comprehension Worksheet Respond to the following in 50 to 100 words each: 1. Describe your outcome from this week’s MyFoundationsLab® assignment. I received a master’s score on this weeks “MyFoundationsLab”. I found the material helpful and insightful because it taught me ways to become a better student by improving my study scores. I mostly enjoyed the video parts of it because I feel like I learn the most from them and they are not as boring as always reading the information. 2. Identify the skills you’ve learned this week. How could each of these apply to your academic work? How could each of these apply to your professional work? The skills that I learned from this week that I can apply to both my academic work and professional work are taking notes as I read important material, and how to understand and remember information. Taking good notes will help me in my academics because it will help me put the main points in my reading material in my own words while creating a short version of a study guide for myself. This also helps in a work setting because if I learn something new I can take short hand notes to help me remember all the important aspects of the job. Along with writing the notes I also have to make myself understand the information and retain it. This is the most important skill for me because I often forget things shortly after learning it. When I improve this skill I will be able to recall more information...

...CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Reading is a way of life. We do reading in our day to day activities, from boarding the bus with the designated signboard to deciphering warning signs in the roads, business letters, and correspondence in the offices schools and even in our own homes. We need reading skills in cooking, reading the labels and instructions and even following directions in using our household gadgets. Reading is a complex process between a reader and a text. (Wedgewood J. 2009). It is simple yet difficult task because it is composed of many interconnected sub-skills that once mastered will make reading flow easily as normal as breathing. As Richard Steele had enunciated, “Reading is to the mind as exercise is to the body.” Another important aspect of Reading is that between the written text and the reader, there should be interaction. This interaction is called comprehension. It is a phase of reading where after decoding the text people react to it. Hence, reading without the concept of understanding is not reading but vocalizing. Putting it simply, reading should have comprehension. Unfortunately, poor comprehension is the prevalent disease of learners today. Thus, the researcher has initiated this action research to show the importance of encouraging the mastery of reading. Make everyone aware of it as an important tool to be incorporated in all subjects. Through this Reading Remedial Program, development of comprehension will be enhanced with activities focusing...

...Teacher Tip #1 Students can record themselves reading a book from their home computer. Have them record a favorite story with bells or dings to signal page turning (the Next button) and allow younger siblings to listen to the read-aloud while following along. Teacher Tip #2 When students have read and listened to all books in their assignment/level, assign a running record for a Benchmark Book or Benchmark Passage to determine student accuracy and readiness to move to the next level. (If Raz-Kids is used during centers, have the student record their reading.) Teacher Tip #3 Use the Assignment report to see at a glance how much of the current assignment a student has completed and whether it may be time to assess a student's reading progress. Teacher Tip #4 Giving students access to the Book Room will help build listening comprehension, increased awareness of differing text structures, and broader vocabulary as students listen to books at higher levels. Teacher Tip #5 Play Raz-Kids songs on an interactive whiteboard during class transitions, and challenge students to be cleaned up and in their seats or in line before the song is complete. This includes self-plagiarism. It is school policy that all works be the student’s own original thoughts unless clearly cited.
