...Introduction Artist Mary Stevenson Cassatt, who shared the revolutionary ideas of artists such as Degas and Monet, was born on 22 May 1844 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Although women were not encouraged to pursue a career, Mary enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts at the age of sixteen. She quickly felt frustrated by the male faculty and students who were patronising and resentful of her attendance. Regardless of these obstacles and her father’s disapproval of her career choice, she continued to pursue art and painting. Cassatt, an impressionist painter, did not conform to standard male images of women and therefore her paintings differ from the more general male representations, especially of women readers during the Victorian period. Cassatt expresses her world through women and therefore “…offers a new vision of the unconsidered facts of everyday bourgeois life…” (Yeh, 1976:359). Cassatt’s work is regarded by Yeh (1976:359) as women-centred art as she regards women as complete within themselves. In her work she represents women as independent, pursuing interests which are not necessarily directed toward the need of her family. Reading women, portraying the reader’s inner strength often occur as a theme in her paintings. Femininity in the Victorian era In the latter Victorian period women artists and their work were considered inferior. In an attempt to overcome the stereotypical female image their work became increasingly more vocal and confident and promoted...

...mean in the eyes of a male. Kimmel wants the audience to see how the good guys are silenced and the perpertrators and bullies are encouraged, and how we need to reverse that for a greater good. What the author is wanting us to think after we read the text is to understand why masculinity is so important to men. The author wants the audience to realize that men are highly influenced by other males, fathers, etc. Kimmel wants the audience to know that every manarism, movement that men make contains a certain coded gender language. Wealth, power, status, strength and physicality is derived for constant proof that a male isn’t seen as ‘unmanly.’ Kimmel wants us to know that a mans masculinity is always needed to be proved. The author uses a great deal of evidence to convince us of her argument. She uses examples from studies that have been done, to help support her claims. Kimmel has asked multiple male students what it means to be a man,...

...micro-inequities…that chip away at girls’ achievement and self-esteem” (Sadker & Sadker, 1994). Research studies shed light on significant decreases in girls’ achievement rates in math and science as early as middle school that continues to decrease into high school. Although the achievement gap in math has declined in recent years (AAUW, 1999), girls consistently score lower on the SAT and ACT than boys do, and the gap does not narrow in college. Researchers struggling to identify the origins of gender differences have examined a range of theories, including biological, environmental, cultural, and cognitive developmental approaches to gender differences. What is Gender Equity? Gender equity implies being treated equally fair for both male and female. Gender refers to the social roles of men and women, and boys and girls, as well as the relationships among them, in a given society at a specific time and place. Gender equity is still a major point of discussion in modern-day education circles, although, Title IX, a groundbreaking statute intended to end sex discrimination in education, became the law of the land on June 23, 1972. While most famous for its requirement that schools provide girls with equal athletic opportunities, the law...

...gap in achievement has been studied. Researchers have studied this trend for many years. They attribute this discrepancy in gender achievement to a number of various factors. Possible influences in this gap include: culture, biological factors, theories in gender behavior, and school attitudes and factors (2008). The longtime concern regarding the role gender plays in academic success has been the grounds for numerous studies around the globe. Our culture has strong imbedded ideals on the role of males and females. Although, changes in these roles continue to evolve there continue to be underlying ideals and behaviors, which are often unintentional, which dictate how we view the two genders. A study entitled, “Children’s Early Approaches to Learning and Academy Trajectories Through Fifth Grade, “found that “….. gender differences in achievement have been detected consistently in the (testing center) with the girls trailing boys in math and boys lagging behind girls in reading.” 3 The article suggests that a significant factor in their findings may...

I am very much grateful to the NSU students, who have cooperated and taken their time to participate in answering my research questions. To my family and friends who have extended their efforts and understanding by helping me find respondents for the questionnaires, albeit some of them were prodded into doing so. A special mention goes to my dear friend, SK, who lent me her laptop when my own laptop sadly stopped functioning in my time of need. Lastly, to Almighty Allah for giving the strength to compile information needed to input into completing the research paper in due time. It has been a difficult topic to research on. ...successful. “In a nutshell, the girls liked the jocks the best, and sometimes decide to give the time of day to the other team, the computer nerds” (Walker, 2004). After playing sports and videogames the last thing boys want to do is crack open their books and study. Sports and video games contribute to the decline of academic success among boys. While boys have become content with average academic performance, females have chosen to rise above and set new expectations for themselves. Over time females have become increasingly encouraged to rise above academically. Girls have excelled in school far more than boys. In 2005, David Brooks author of “Mind over Muscle”, stated that “This year 133 women will graduate from college for every 100 males.” I believe boys are...

...the world of reading, our interest is one of the most salient factor that needs to be consider. It depends on the reasons why we read a certain material. We read because we are force to do so, for school requirements or we read we like it. If we like to read, reading materials matters most. Among the four macro skills in learning, Reading is the most important that a person needs to acquire because it is a vehicle that can be used to know and discover the world of learning and experiences. Reading defined as the process of decoding the printed materials. It is the very important aspect in education. It is basic tool of all subject areas. As stated by Santiago (2003) of Department of Education, National Capital Region. Reading is the mother of all skills. Reading is one of the myriad vehicles that provide readers with opportunities to anchor their spaceship of eagerness and interests – to know and discover the secrets behind the wonderful planet of vision and ideas. (Violesa S. Adrian) However, students nowadays, reading is taken for granted. They access to almost anything electronic such that old habits like playing street games or even reading have almost gone extinct. And one important educational issue is to increase the amount of interesting reading that students engage in. ...writing “Is He Boyfriend Material?” is, “teenage girls’ magazines play an important role in shaping the norms of the millions of girls who read them.” (Firminger 298) Also, the author’s motivation for writing this article is to show the audience how magazines can “shape the norms of expectations during a crucial stage of identity and relationship development.” (Currie 1999, Firminger 299) The main argument of this article is, how are males and male conduct depicted in well known adolescent girls' magazines? The author wants us to be able to understand what male focused content entails & female focused content entails within a girls’ magazine. ...A Study of Middle Grades Students’ Reading Interests, Habits, and Achievement Nichole Lynnette Smith A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctorate of Education in the School of Education. Chapel Hill 2009 Approved By: Dr. Barbara Day Dr. Frank Brown Dr. Sandra Hughes-Hassell Dr. Teresa Petty Dr. Xue Lan Rong i © 2009 Nichole Lynnette Smith ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Nichole Lynnette Smith: A Study of Middle Grades Students’ Reading Interests, Habits, and Achievement (Under the direction of Dr. Barbara Day, Advisor) Reading has become an area of concern among the American culture in the past decade. The amount of time the American public spends reading is declining quickly, and its most frequent drop has been among its youngest readers, elementary school students (National Endowment for the Arts, 2004). McKool’s (2007) research has found that there is a “strong relationship between the amount of out-of-school reading a student engages in and his or her success in school” (p. 111). It has also been found that students’ academic levels do not remain the same with no growth, but their academic levels actually drop if they do not read in their free time (Hughes- Hassell & Lutz, 2006). The current literature focuses on younger students, especially those in elementary school. The purpose of this study was to investigate potential differences of what influences...
