There are several examples in the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton that illustrate that Ponyboy is out of touch with reality. One example is one page 150 where Ponyboy says “ He isn’t dead…… I convince myself he isn’t dead.” This quote refers to Ponyboy being delusional because he believes in his mind that Johnny is still alive, but as the readers we know that he died in the hospital as a result of his injuries from the fire in the church. Another example is on page 151. Here it’s stated, from Ponyboy’s point of view, that “ I might have stumbled around all night.” This proves that even though Ponyboy had grown up in that same town all his life the death of Johnny really knocked something out of him. A sign that someone is not in their

Killing Daniel

...examining our refusal to open our eyes to brutal reality. Helen Garner exposes the horrific and brutal story of Daniel Valerio, whom in society permitted to be beaten to death at only the age of two by his own mothers ‘boyfriend’. Garner comments that as a result of societies apathy, and refusal to open our eyes to reality, we allow evil to prosper within the society we live in. Expository texts open our eyes to the harsh reality of life and encourage us to take action against societies apathy. In the text killing Daniel, Garner comments on apathy within contemporary Australian society by describing those who lack action and concern towards those considered as ‘outsiders.’ By the use of descriptive language Garner describes apathy within the professional’s walls of society. Garner remarks that people with profession’s dealing with aberrant abuse can become desensitized to these situations, which often result in horrific consequences. This is reinforced by Garners comment that doctors were “impressed in court by their lackluster quality. Their manner appeared limp, their language feeble and non-committal.” By the use of the words lackluster, limp, feeble and non-committal, Garner suggests that authority figures such as doctors, are evasive towards the aberrant child abuse in society and act half-heartedly towards those effected. As a result from constantly dealing with such incidents doctors have become desensitized to the harsh realities in society....

Rhetorical Analysis On David Denby

...In this passage David Denby's purpose was to explain the stereotypical high school movie genre. In these typical teen movies there's usually a pretty, popular cheerleader, her jock boyfriend, and the weird outsider that doesn't fit in. Denby wrote this to explain what a typical high school is like for teenagers, while knowing that this is nothing like what high school is like in reality, its just the way people who are outcasts perceive school. These outcasts see high school like a place that is ruled by one individual and their popular friends, when all these outsiders really want is to have what these popular kids had. Denby used rhetorical devices like pathos when he described how the characters felt. This passage was more...

...their world, a world that has been shattered. They attempt to reach their allotment dream, and the downfall of those who attempt to reach its imaginary goals. ...profit. Consider the likenesses to movies about Native-Americans, where they are driven from their own property for the purpose of people with weapons needing to take their territory to live on and mine for gold and land. This is something that has been going ahead since human species have walked the earth, and it goes much more profound than simply Native-Americans. Hitler endeavored to do it to all of Europe, uprooting whoever he felt was mediocre, however it truly descended to his requirement for force and longing to have what those individuals had property, belonging, and so on). They weren't going to offer it to him, so he took it. Avatar essentially decide to recount this account of bigotry and genocide differently, utilizing "outsiders" as the indigenous individuals, and over-fanatical, cash hungry earthlings looking for a valuable mineral as the villain. It's truly only a retelling of what Americans did to the Native- Americans here, and what regimes and tribes have been doing in African nations for a large number of years. Everything comes down to a greater human advancement assuming control over a littler one, so they didn't need to go far when composing Avatar they just took a gander at world history and after that changed over some of earth's most prominent tragedies onto the planet of Pandora. ...not as bad as it sounds.” (Huckleberry Finn) Compare how the theme of outsiders is presented in Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn, D.B.C Pierre’s Vernon God Little and Sylvia Plath’s Ariel. Throughout the history of literature, the idea of an outsider unable to find his place within society is explored frequently in all three texts. The theme of the outsiders is presented in all novels but separated due to the different time periods in which they were set, thus resulting in controversy and criticisms making it difficult to find a place within literature. Mark Twain’s ‘Huckleberry Finn’ is the story of a young boy, Huck Finn, who is faced with a restraint enforced upon him by society and later acknowledges this restraint once he comes to the realization that there is no escape from the society. ‘Vernon God Little’, like Huckleberry Finn, is also a story of a young boy framed as an accessory in a High School Massacre and is rendered to be an outcast in a society which revolves around manipulation and gullibility. Both Pierre and Twain portray the limitations and issues placed upon a young boy growing up in society. Sylvia Plath was viewed as a feminist icon, her collection ‘Ariel’, adopts the theme of outsider, as she believed women were classed as second-tier in a male dominant society and posed as a response to patriarchy in which oppressed women. The three texts intertwine in the portrayal of the outsider and act as a commentary on the societies in which these writers lived in...

The Pros And Cons Of An Outsider

...Some outsiders have a phase of denial and when they see a self-reflection of themselves through another entity, it fuels hate. If they can see the same faults others have that they have as well, it causes the individual to not only hate those people, but themselves as well. It is the outsiders who are now looking in. The outsider is looking at themselves through another outsider. These hurdles delay or halt the logical reasoning. Especially for children, illogically transitions to a conclusion can form unnecessary hate. The temptation of reverting back to old habits becomes increasingly tempting. Appearance In The Outsiders, By S. E. Hinton

...Don't judge my looks I’ve looked around and noticed that Appearance is key in Today’s society. Today's world is a world of hypocrite that say don't judge people by their looks but that’s exactly what they do. In the book The Outsiders by S.E Hinton has a great way of showing this. In this essay I will be explaining that appearance can mean everything. Most people look at what a person is wearing atomically assume. This is showed in the beginning of the novel The Outsiders Ponyboy, the narrator, is describing how the people he knows look like. An example of this is when Ponyboy says “we wear our hair long and dress in blue jeans and T-shits, or leave our shirttails out and wear leather jackets and tennis shoes or boots”(3). Ponyboy is trying to say that they dress like that because that’s how they know to dress, they grew up dressing like that. He uses the word “we” to show us that when people see someone dressed like that they assume that their greasers. Another example is when a Socs say “we’re gonna cut all that greasy hair off” (5). How Does Hinton Present Gold In The Outsiders

...In the novel The Outsiders, the author presents gold as valued items in life. Gold can be friends, innocence, or a good heart, which Dally sees in Johnny making Johnny his gold. S.E. Hinton argues that gold will not last forever, so it should be cherished and appreciated for as long as it lasts. Gold cannot be preserved forever. The poem Ponyboy recites while watching the sunset says, “so dawn goes down to day.” (Hinton, 77) Johnny describes dawn as everything new and day as when you get used to everything. (Hinton, 178) Gold is dawn, for new things are special and appreciated. However, dawn will not last forever. At some point, it will become day, so gold should be valued until it is gone. Rhetorical Analysis: Latino Lives In America

...Do we as Americans make immigrants feel like outsiders? A flashback into 2012 reminds us Americans of our newly elected President Barack Obama, the outrage cry for equality in gay marriage, and the controversial death of Trayvon Martin. For authors Michael Jones-Correa and Louis Mendoza- 2012 however, was a year for increased immigration as well a time for equality with immigration. Both authors raise questions for its proposed audience. While Jones-Correa purpose is to inform and Mendoza to persuade, both prove to be very convincing in their arguments. Although both writers seem to be credible and effective in logical reason, Author Louis Mendoza achieves a more effective rhetorical analysis through his use of emotional appeal. Jones-Correa being a professor of government at Cornell University automatically has a strong set level of credibility. As well as being the co-author of the book “Latino Lives in America: Making It Home”. However, to strengthen his credibility he takes an informative stand point for his targeted audience. With an informative piece and/or standpoint its sole purpose is to do exactly that, inform. Relying solely on fact based interpretation, thus leaving no room for bias in his article. Keeping bias out of his work...

Identity In Hinton's The Outsiders

...The Outsiders shows that teens join social groups to help create their identities. In joining these cliques, the adolescents take on both the positive and negative characteristics of them. Looking at life as an outsider and feeling as though one is being treated as an outsider is a matter of perspective or point of view. Adolescence is a time when teenagers may consider themselves to be adults, but in reality teens are still under the control of others. Parents, teachers, and other authority figures are always telling them how to live their lives. This loss of control inevitably leads to the feeling that life isn't fair. For example, Ponyboy knows that he is not safe walking the streets in his own neighborhood. He could be attacked solely...
