Explain Why Civil War Broke Out in China in 1946

...Explain why civil war broke out in China in 1946 to 1949 The nationalists began the Guomindang offensive against the communists in Manchuria, 1946. This was to be the start of bloody civil war that would last for three years, until the communists assumed their victory in october of 1949 and Chiang fled to Taiwan. One key factor in the reason for the civil war were the conflicting ideologies between the communists and the nationalists. They did not agree on any matter regarding China and their opinions on the policies and methods to improve China were very different from the other. These differences prevented both parties from coexisting peacefully. Whenever peace was negotiated, one party would attempt to alter it or simply disregard the terms, so peace was impossible to achieve. The Guomindang, for example, was supported by business men and landlords and aimed for a capitalist, private enterprising system in China. The communists however, aimed for a revolutionary overthrow of the regime and to confiscate all the land from the landowners and businessmen and to create an equal, classless society where all the land and business was shared by all the people. The Communists and Nationalists shared a very turbulent past. There had been existing tensions between both parties for many years now, and the tensions were only increasing. Years upon years of conflict and rivalry between the Nationalists and Communists had left a legacy of mistrust and suspicion between them. After...

The American Civil War

...The American Civil War Jill Ayala HIS/115 February 19, 2012 Jody Ault The American Civil War “In the course of four years, more than 2% of the population of the United State lost their lives in the American Civil War, between 618,000 and 700,000 people” (American Civil War, 2012).  Never before or since has there been such a tragic event occur. There are many different opinions regarding the American Civil, why it occurred, and what the actual reasons for the War were. A Nation Divided In 1861 the American Civil War erupted after many years of conflicts between the North (the Union) and the South (the Confederacy). These conflicts included western expansion, States rights versus federal authority, and slavery. With the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 seven Southern states (South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama) declared their succession from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America. Four more states (Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia, and Arkansas) joined the Confederation after start of the Civil War. The Confederates wanted to remain slave State. The Union wanted to bring the country back together as one single, unified nation. Why the North Won the Civil War In 1860 he South’s population was 1/3 slaves. The South relied heavily on the slave trade and not only wanted but needed the slave trade to continue for economic purposes. They wanted to become and independent nation...

...University Of Phoenix Civil War Paper By Shane Iverson 12/23/2012 HIS/115 The Civil war was a huge war fought over territories and freedom. Over 600,000 Americans lost their lives in this war, with the North having been more effected. The North had no regrets about the war. They were satisfied that the slaves were free, and the Union was preserved. The South began to glorify what they called “the lost cause”. The generals from the south became mythic heroes. As they looked back at the war they almost regretted surrendering. Historian Shelby Foote left us with this note. “Any understanding of this nation has to be based . . . on an understanding of the Civil War. . . . The Civil War defined us as what we are, and it opened us to being what we became, good and bad things. It is very necessary if you’re going to understand the American character in the 20th century to learn about this enormous catastrophe of the mid-19th century. It was the crossroads of our being”. What does this tell us about the United States? What did Foote mean when he spoke these words? We may also think to ourselves. Why didn’t the South win? There leaders were supposedly brilliant and they lost fewer men then the North, right? What did Historian Shelby Foote mean in his quote above? He is saying that it is necessary to learn about this huge catastrophe that happened in...

Historical Response 2

...History 165 Third Response Paper 2 December 2012 The Civil War stemmed from many issues mainly, the economic differences in the northern and southern states, states’ rights, slavery, the election of Abraham Lincoln and finally the southern succession were the driving forces behind the outbreak of the civil war. Moving into the 19th century, the southern and northern states began to develop different industries and therefore different class systems. In 1793, Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin. This invention made cotton extremely profitable and prompted many southern planters to begin farming cotton instead of other crops. In the production of cotton, there is a high need for labor. In the southern states, labor meant slaves. Although there was other options for labor in the south, slaves were the cheapest labor and to planters, cheaper labor meant higher profits. The wealth that was associated with plantation life, led to an agricultural focus in the south. As soon in Visions in America, there was a definite class system present in the south with planters on top, followed by landless white men, and then finally slaves. In the north, the economy was based on industry. The northern economy depended on purchasing raw goods (including those goods manufactured in the southern states) and using those goods in factories and producing finished goods. Because of the increase in factories, people from different cultures and classes began having more interaction. Immigrants, native whites...

Why Did Texas Fight In The Civil War Essay

...wanted slaves. A month later on April 12th, 1861, The Civil War had began between the Union, and the Confederacy. So, why did the Texans fight in the Civil War? Back in the 1800’s, slaves were allowed by several of the southern states. The north however, had a much different opinion than the south (all documents). In the north, slaves were prohibited. As stated earlier, Texas had seceded from the union, because the union did not tolerate slavery. Governor Sam Houston felt strongly against secession of the union, for it took so long for them to be accepted, that they became one of the last states to secede, and join the confederacy. Sam Houston, who did not believe in slavery, unlike most of the Texas population, refused to take the oath of loyalty to the confederacy and was...

The Dogs of War

...In the novel “The Dogs of War,” Emory M. Thomas presents a valid argument that once the dogs of war are allowed to run free they turn into erratic and intolerable animals. His outlook describes how certain misunderstandings dominated the way the Union and Confederate states observed one another. Mr. Thomas’s reflection of the war explained how the war was created and gives details about the events that extended the nation’s first bloodbath. The analogy dogs of war were used to compare both sides failure to consider that things may not go as planned. According to the author, Abraham Lincoln underestimated the Southerners love for the south and Davis doubted the Northerners strength believing that the North would not even last through the first battle in the war. The purpose of this essay is to evaluate Emory M. Thomas’s argument on how America couldn’t handle something it had started; given that several martial moments had steered, extended and destroyed what we knew as the Union and the Confederate era; the art of not knowing or maybe just not even considering other possibilities were reasons why the American Civil war had transpired in the first place. Mr. Thomas insists that martial moments led up to the Civil War; one being the battle at Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina. According to Emory Thomas, the war that began that fateful April day had been coming for a long time. He explains that when Confederate general Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard Chestnut uttered...

Historical Matrix

...Events leading up to the Civil War University of Phoenix There were many factors that led to the Civil War in 1861. Most people would say that slavery is the leading cause and the only reason for the Civil War. It was one of the reasons, but not the only reason. There were five leading causes that led to the Civil War and they were: economic and social differences, state versus federal rights, slavery, the Abolition Movement and the election of Lincoln as President. Economic and Social Differences The invention of Eli Whitney’s Cotton Gin in 1793 led to many differences between the North and the South. Cotton became a very profitable crop for both and the time to process it had been greatly reduced by the machine. In the South, more plantations began to produce cotton, which increased the need for slaves. The North on the other hand was based more on industry than agriculture and was purchasing the raw cotton and turning it into finished goods. The ever evolving northern society encompassed people of different races and cultures working together. The southern states continued to hold onto their social pecking order. (americanhistory.about.com, 2011) States versus Federal rights Southern states were in favor of state’s rights over federal rights; northern states were in favor of a federal government. States rights would enable the states themselves to decide if a federal law was constitutional or not and whether or not that they were willing to accept it. When they were...

The Role Of Photography In The Civil War

...Civil War Photography Photography in the Civil War was very important. Photography was very important because it showed what happened on the battlefield and what the soldiers looked like, photography was a new invention and different types of photography were invented during the Civil War, and finally, photographers became well known and more famous. One reason that photography was important in the war was that it showed what happened on the battlefields. Sure, there are paintings of the battles, but most of the time the artists aren’t actually at the battles. Photographers are actually at the battles and sometimes on the battlefields taking the pictures. Photos are more accurate than paintings. Another reason why photography was important to the Civil War was that photography was a new invention. Photography was originally invented by Nicéphore Niépce in 1826. The most commonly photography used was wet-plate photography. That process was invented by Frederick Scott Archer ten years before the Civil War began. Wet-plate photography was a very difficult...

Cause of Civil War

...Over the years people have thought of many different causes for the civil war that took over 600,000 American lives in 1861-1865. Many people believe that the only true cause of the civil war was because of slavery but the war itself was fought over something much bigger than just slavery it was fought over the great political difference between the North and South. The actions of the Democratic politicians from the South and Republican politicians from the North kept the conflict between the states at the center of the political debate for years and made the war inevitable. Key political causes of the civil war include the acts congress passed, the split that happened throughout the years between congress, and most importantly the election in 1860 that elected Abraham Lincoln as president. Congress, throughout the years since America won independence passed laws they believed would help their nation. But as slavery became more of a problem in the nation, acts passed by congress became more important and affected the outcome of the American nation and its citizens much greater. Congress passed many acts throughout the years leading to the Civil War, but some very important ones that both held off the civil war and pushed the civil war are the Missouri Compromise of 1820, the Connecticut Compromise of 1850 and the Kansas – Nebraska Act of 1854. The Missouri Compromise was passed in 1820 after Missouri requested in 1819 to be part of the Union as a slave state. Missouri’s request...

The period runs from the beginning of WWII thought the end of the 1960’s. The Vietnam War period was a very tumultuous period for the United States and a counterculture was created. Women and minorities continued to make advances and even had some victories in the Civil Rights arena. There were several major tuning points that occurred during this time period but, I selected WWII and the Cold War because I believe they had the greatest impact. The first turning point to be discussed will be World War II. The war prompted a tremendous mobilization of America Resources, at a level not seen since the Civil War. The American Economy ramped up from that of the low-production Great Depression years to the most powerful economy in the world. The economy showed the most remarkable improvement, Wartime mobilization boosted production, increased demand for labor, and rescues the economy from the depression.
