It was finals week now, but not that it mattered. Rebecca was too scared to leave her apartment to go to class, so she failed them all anyway. Rebecca’s mom was looking into getting an apartment nearby so she could be close if something ever happened, which, thanks to people failing their finals and moving out of town, was easier than expected. Carol was touring an apartment on the other side of town today. Her mom had offered to bring her with, but the idea of being alone in her own house was more comforting than going out in public where he might see her, even if the comfort increase was only minuscule. “You were so drunk, baby. So, so, so, drunk. All your friends, well I wouldn’t call them friends, left you and you had no ride home. You let me drive you back.” Rebecca remembered nothing of that night, but she did remember the wire-taps in the house. She couldn’t stand to her held by this man any longer, in fact every second he held on to her the more she felt like she had bugs crawling up her arms, but getting him to talk about what he did was her best chance of getting him arrested. Even though his speech was slurred from his obvious alcohol problem and hard to understand at times, there was a chance that Officer Erickson would check in on the taps. Besides, if he was going to do anything with her, she wanted to at least know why.
“What else happened that night? Did we…?” she asked, trying to sound as sincere as anyone could when they are trying to repress tears. The thought that she may have done something intimate with this man made her want to puke.
He smiled in a way that reminded Rebecca of Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland. “I obviously wasn’t going to take advantage of you. God, what kind of person would I be if I took advantage of some girl when she was intoxicated?” He laughed. “No, I just dropped you off on your couch. But I wanted to make sure you were safe, so I happened to check in every now and then. It was my gentlemanly duty to do so, seeing as I knew how to get in the building.”
