Not all marriages have happy endings, not all marriages last forever and moving on can be difficult. That is what the short story Reconciliation, written by Polly Clark, is trying to tell us.
The story is written in 1st person because we are able to read what she is thinking and feeling – even when she doesn’t know it: “It’s my first day, I cycled here” etc. It all starts “in medias res”, where the reader is thrown into the events and quickly forced to understand everything that is happening. The fact that it’s the narrator who tells the story gives a very good insight into her world and what she is thinking and that is very important when you have to characterize her.
The story takes place in an office and we follow the narrator and main character, Laura, as she has her first day at her new job. Not just any job, it’s also where her husband works. Her husband is called Vernon Pringle and Laura describes him as a turtle: “..His name is Vernon. He looks like a turtle. More specifically he looks like a turtle without a carapace which gives him a rather exposed and nervous air.” He is also described in a more bad way: “His arms in his shiny blue shirt are curved protectively around his papers, as if all of us, being human, are prone to cheating”. That shows how little he trusts people and is always trying to protect what is his from all others.”
When the story starts and Laura describes her clothing and appearance she seems very normal and not really too interesting. Laura has been married to Vernon “for half a life” which means she can’t be that young but I’d guess she was somewhere around her midlife or younger, even though the story never tells us. She knows Vernon very well and points it out a lot in the story: “I know every line of his face. That face has watched over me, that face has known me at my best”. She is very keen on making a good impression and

Reconciliation

...Reconciliation What is sanity? Some might say that sanity is the ability to see the world, as it is right now. If that is the case, how can we ever know, if anyone is sane? The question of sanity becomes topical in the short story "Reconciliation" written by Polly Clark in 2006 and the word reconciliation has a very central meaning for the main character. The main character and narrator, Laura seems to see the world a little bit different from other people. The narrator of the short story is a first-person narrator, and therefore she is, by definition, subjective. The story she tells us is seen from her point of view, and it is always a problem, if only one point of view is used on actions. Especially if the narrator has problems seeing the world as it really is. The narrator's mind seems to be quite untidy. At first, she forgets to bring proper shoes to work, and then she decides to explain it with mountaineering. That is probably one of the worst possible excuses for forgetting anything. This tells us, that the narrator's sense of occasion and sense of order is not the best. Furthermore, she tells us, that she has dry washed her hair, probably without success. That also does not witness about the greatest sense of order. Perhaps the narrator is looking for order. It could be, that she continuously searches amongst others for the one thing she cannot produce herself. It seems that the narrator is in a drastic psychological development. She is married, but yet she wants...

...Reconciliation What is insanity? Some would say that insanity is the seed of disorder in one’s mind, and that those who suffer from insanity, can’t see the world for what it really is. But what if insanity is just the society’s way of dismissing those with a different understanding of the fundamentals of the world. Many people treat those with mental disorders as less than humans, many people just dismisses everything they have to say. This question of disorder becomes very relevant in the short story “Reconciliation” by Polly Clark. The main character and narrator, Laura have developed a different view of the world than most people. The narrator of the short story is a first-person narrator, and therefore she is bound to be Subjective. The story she tells us is seen from her point of view, and it is always a problem, if only one point of view is used on actions. Especially if the narrator has problems seeing the world through uncoloured glasses. The narrators mind is a mess, this is clearly seen in the first line off the story in which she didn’t bring her shoes to work “It's my first day …. and I have forgotten my shoes” (p. 1 l. 1) This show that...

Reconciliation

...The short story “Reconciliation” is written by Polly Clark. The story is about a woman named Laura, who, in the attempt to get her husband back before they get divorced, applies at her husband’s work. She gets the job as a temp at the office and has to work with her husband, Vernon. At the office, Vernon gives her a task to mark the figures which are the same on each sheet. The numbers, which do not fit with a partner, remains unreconciled. The story is written in first-person narrator, where we get the story told by the narrator Laura. The story is chronologically constructed with an open end, which is typically for the short story genre. The narrator is a middle-aged woman, who has not found the meaning of her life yet “It’s my first day (…) and I have forgotten my shoes”, her life is very disorderly and chaotic. Her sense of well-prepared is not that good either, not only because of her forgotten shoes, but also the way she tries to save time, tells us that she is not prepared well, “I’m wearing the clothes I slept in. It saved me 20 minutes this morning (…) I could sleep a little longer”. Laura’s self-worth is not good, which appears at the office when she meets Janny. She gets very jealous at her,” I don’t think I ever longed to be someone so much as I long to be her”. This tells us that she is a very unsteady person, and does not believe in herself. Laura and Vernon have been together for a long time, “We began our relationship – half my life ago (…)”, but the relationship...

Reconciliation

...ACCOUNTING FOR INCOME TAXES RECONCILIATIONS REQUIRED BY IFRS AND ASPE RECONCILING WHEN USING THE ACCRUAL (DEFERRAL) METHOD IFRS requires that the notes to the financial statements include a reconciliation of the accounting income before income tax multiplied by the statutory tax rate for the year and the income tax expense for the year. When the accrual (deferral) method is used, as is required by IFRS, temporary differences are accounted for through the deferred tax expense for the year so there will be two types of reconciling items. These are the tax effects of permanent differences and the effect of rate changes on deferred tax asset and liability balances. Non-taxable revenues will result in a reconciling item equal to the tax that would have been recognized in income tax expense if the items were taxable. This will be the amount of the non-taxable revenue multiplied by the tax rate for the year. Non-deductible expenses will result in a reconciling item increasing taxes by the amount that income tax expense would have been reduced if the expenses had been deductible. This will be the amount of the non-deductible expenses multiplied by the income tax rate. The impact of the change in income tax rates can be calculated by determining the amount of the temporary differences at the time of the rate change and multiplying by the change in the rate. This can be done for each temporary difference (and then summed) or can be done on the net temporary differences at the...

This is seen in the conflict, where the narrator meets her husband, whom she is getting divorced with. The first person narrator is also the main character who is called Laura. We hear about her first day at her new job in the credit control department. I hope he understands what it means, the seriousness with which I take him, and us.” She wants to be taken serious. The main character struggles to act normal and she is insecure, since she takes off her trainers, because she thinks they would look weird with her skirt. She is crazy and superficial, because she is lying about thing she hasn’t done. Laura feels that she has flaws and maybe that’s why she must be divorced because she told Vernon about those flaws. The narrator is jealous of Janny and she wants to be her, because Janny is the woman her husband loves and she is a confident young and stylish woman. The relationship between the narrator and her husband is weird. Mr. Vernon Pringle is Laura’s manager and husband. In the beginning we only know that Vernon is her manager. She doesn’t say that he is her husband. It is from Vernon we learn that they are married, when he says Laura is my...

Essay - Reconciliation

...The short story Reconciliation was written in 2006 by the author Polly Clark. The story gently touches the area of which you go from sane to insane. After reading the story you could ask yourself; what is sanity? And where do we draw the line from a person being sane, to a person being insane? The question about sanity is a valid subject to discuss after reading “Reconciliation”, because the main character and narrator Laura seems to be quite strange and she doesn’t seem to know how to interact with other people. These things are shown very early on – as well as the first small signs of her being on the edge of sanity. At first she forgets to bring proper footwear on the first day at her new job. That combined with her not washing her hair properly, but instead doing a rather unsuccessful (her own words) “dry wash”, could be blamed on her just being a rather untidy person. The first real sign of her being on the edge of sanity is when she explains why she is walking around the office bare footed. She blames it on mountaineering which – let’s face it – is the worst excuse possible. Other signs that show that her mind is rather dysfunctional are the narrator’s use of imagery in her head. She compares her husband – Vernon – with a rhinoceros and a turtle and she describes his shoulders as being like branches in a gale. All of this could be her way of making him lesser human and therefore making herself seem more normal. She even refers to her lacking the skills of being normal when...

Freedome Riders Journal

...A Freedom Rider De’Shunda L. Davis-Brown HIS/145 The American Experience Since 1945 December 15, 2014 Instructor: James Green Looking back to 1960 and 1961, I am reminded of a time of fear, despair, inequality as well as accomplishment. Being an African American was hard during those times, but, as an activist and active part of the change seen today in 2014, I am proud to say I was a tremendous part of the Civil Rights Movement. Patterned after a 1947 Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) project known as the Journey of Reconciliation, the Freedom Rides began in early May with a single group of thirteen Riders recruited and trained by CORE’s national staff. We were a diverse group of volunteers, black and white, young and old, male and female, secular and religious, Northerners and Southerners (Arsenault, 2006). In 1960, the US Supreme Court expanded upon previous rulings and declared segregation in bus terminals, waiting rooms, restaurants, restrooms, and other interstate travel facilities unconstitutional. A year later, SNCC joined forces with the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) in an effort to test the will of local and federal officials to enforce the new legal decisions. Black and white “Freedom Riders” (as we called ourselves) traveled together on bus rides into the Deep South. During these rides, we challenged the government to protect participants from mobs of Klansmen (members of the Ku Klux Klan) and violent segregationists. In 1961 CORE undertook a new...

Essay of Reconciliation

...Reconciliation Marriage has through centuries if not millennia been a vital key for the well-being of the average human being. Literally it's a legal contract between spouses, but in reality it's much more than. Marriage is in present day the physical and mental attraction between two who dearly love each other. Yet sometimes the spark of love begins to fade and a divorce is required. Sometimes the divorce is wished by only one of the participants; the other person might want to 'Reconciliation' is a short story written by the author Polly Clark. The short story was published in 2006. The story is about Laura; a middle-aged woman who is desperately trying to regain the contact to her soon-to-be former husband, Vernon. Laura is the character who is the medium of observations and thoughts in the story, and as such, the short story is written in a first-person narrative. The duration of the story is around a single day of work, even though Laura is thinking about her morning, she is speaking in past tense. The structure is chronologically structured and uses the 'In medias res' narrative technique. Throughout the text, the impression that Laura is self-conscious is given, and off the bat we see that she's concerned about fitting in. To dress nicely and wear matching clothes isn't really for your own sake, but to acquire recognition from your fellow human beings and thus it's a way of showing to others that you're "up-to-date" so to speak, and thus it can be concluded that Laura...

Freedom Riders

...Freedom Riders John Smith HIS/145 September 17, 2014 Freedom Riders Journal entry December 12th 1961: It has been difficult living in the era that we do. Being an African American in Alabama is not the life I had envisioned for myself. The benefit of going to college, which is handed to white people, is often unobtainable for the black person. I have always known I was destined to do something more with my life. The Jim Crowe laws constantly remind me that I am not an equal to those around me. Last year 1960, the Supreme Court ruled that those very laws are illegal. Shortly after those rulings my sister took part in a sit-in at a drug store, which led to that store changing its policy. Later she met Ella Baker an SCLC activist and was invited to a conference at Shaw University in Raleigh in April 1960. That conference led to the creation of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. That committee took nonviolent actions ever more forward by organizing freedom rides. This was a direct challenge of segregation on interstate busses as the Constitution protected interstate commerce. Inspired by my sister’s actions I have made up my mind to join those people. To stand up and stand out in order to see that discrimination comes to an end. There are some 400 freedom riders putting the Supreme Court ruling to the test. We often go in inter-racial teams from somewhere North in to the Segregated South. Essentially backed by Boynton v. Virginia, (1960) ruling that segregation...

Conscientious Objector In Antigone

...A conscientious objector is defined as a person standing up for what they believe to be right. A person in the real world, like Rosa Parks, or a character from a play, such as Antigone, can be conscientious objectors. Antigone and Rosa Parks both fit the description of a conscientious objector. The reason why they fit into the description is because both women had the courage to do what they thought was right. In the play Antigone by Sophocles, the character Antigone can be described as a conscientious objector. An example in the play that shows her righteousness would be when Antigone buried Polyneices, her brother, even though Creon had made a decree saying “no one shall bury him”(Sophocles 688). Creon prohibited anyone from burying Polyneices because he betrayed his people by attacking them. Polyneices’ brother, Eteocles, is considered a hero for dying for his people, so that they were protected. Since Eteocles died as a brave hero, Creon buried him “with military honors”(688) and “gave him a soldier's funeral…”(Sophocles 688). Therefore meaning that Polyneices did not receive a funeral. Antigone was filled with anger and believed that leaving Polyneices out on a field for carrion birds to feed on was not the right thing to do. She went on her own to go look for Polyneices’ corpse and buried him. Antigone’s motive to do such was to follow the “laws of the gods”(Sophocles 689). The laws said, anyone who does not receive a burial would never be able to rest in peace. Eventually...
