...Recreational Drugs Tiwander Aleck COMM/156 March 4, 2012 Instructor: Cheryl Mason Recreational Drugs We are risking our lives without knowing it! Any substance with pharmacologic effects used for satisfaction or personal pleasure rather than for medicinal purposes, is called recreational drug use. Examine this, individuals young and old have answered the question whether, recreation drugs are good for you. They have answered this question by suffering the consequences of misusing recreational drug. Society needs to be aware that recreational drugs such as Cocaine, Alcohol, and marijuana have contributed to health problems, criminal activity and addiction. Awareness of the effects of these drugs, without a doubt needs to be addressed in the United States, to help lower the negative statistics recreational drugs have caused, which will give individuals a chance before they decide to participate or misuse recreational drugs. Alcohol is one of the most used recreational drugs today. Alcohol can cause a variety of feelings such as relaxation, happiness, drunkenness and sleepiness. Any consumption of alcohol goes directly into the bloodstream and physically affects are body and mind. Alcohol is mainly used for sociability; it is very common for binge drinkers to abuse alcohol, and result with the disease of alcoholism. ...Recreational drug use is defined as the consumption of narcotics to have a altered state of mind, usually to create a positive atmosphere (White 2012). In Canada the judicial opinion on recreational drug use is that it is illegal. In the cases of R.v Malmo-Levine and R.v Caine have challenged the constitutionality of the criminalization of recreational drugs. R.v Malmo-Levine ran an organization that attempted to reduce the harm associated with marijuana, police raided his club and he was charged with the possession of marijuana and for trafficking. R.v Caine was caught with marijuana in his car and was also charged for the possession of marijuana(Dyzenhause et al 2007). In the case of R.v Malmo-Levine and R.v Caine have argued the criminalization...

Essay: It is a general economic rule, that as long as there is a demand for drugs there will always be a supply, unless scarcity occurs, but it doesn’t appear as if Colombia is running out of cocaine anytime soon. It is very difficult to control drug imports. There is no way to stop drug imports completely. By keeping a drug off the streets, its price soars, which makes the drug profitable. Drugs cannot be stopped by making them more profitable. This simple concept the government does not seem to understand. Each time the police makes a drug bust, it makes the monster bigger, the drug more profitable. The only way to kill this monster is to make it collapse on its own weight. By legalizing drugs the whole black market would crumble, making illegal drugs as expensive as prescription drugs, the whole world economy would also benefit greatly. South American countries could finally get out of debt by legally exporting drugs. The United States of America are acting as a world police. They are fighting a “War on Drugs”, but there is no way that the United States is going to stop the whole world from producing drugs. ...Principles of Sociology I do not believe that recreational drugs should be legalized for a number of reasons. In my opinion, if they were legalized children and teens would have much easier access to them. Even with an age limit, such as we have for alcohol and tobacco, they would still get into the hands of our youth. Secondly, with the legalization of recreational drugs, there would be an increase in crime and motor vehicle accidents due to the fact that a much larger number of people would be drug users and many of these recreational drug significantly alter a persons judgment and some can also have hallucinogenic effects. Personally, I cannot think of any positives of legalizing recreational drugs in America. As for gambling, I do believe that it should be legalized. In my opinion a large part of the reason for which gambling is illegal is so that the government can keep track and tax and and all income an individual were to take in. Legalizing gambling doesn’t hurt anyone but rather puts one less hand in the pocket of the American citizen and thus forces thee government to cut back or recoup that revenue elsewhere. In the matter of whether or not to legalize prostitution, I believe that the benefits of legalization outweigh the draw backs of doing so. Men and women have one time sexual encounters with each other every day with no exchange of payment. Paying for sex is no different than paying a misuse for a massage. You’re in a secluded area where in most cases...

Nowadays in the US society, people have started to use marijuana for recreational purposes, and it is responding to obvious abuse damages of human health. Whether the use of marijuana for recreational use should be legalized or not is still a question that bothers many generations of human society. In my paper, I will be against...

...There has been endless debate about the public health risks and benefits of cannabis. Legalization of cannabis for medicinal and recreational use has been a one of most disputed issues in the United States. This has become an important issue in public health because, although some risks and benefits are known, more research is needed to determine other harmful and therapeutic effects (Wilkinson, 2016). There is not enough evidence for wide-spread clinical or recreational use. Laws, initiatives and policies for making marijuana legal may lead to, “increased clinical and recreational usage, a wide range of methods for consumption, and conflicts between state and federal laws. However, these policies would focus on guarding the health and safety...

...Washington made momentous and almost entirely novel choice to legalize and regulate recreational marijuana use. In spite of clear conflict with Federal drug laws; the voting majorities in Colorado and Washington , decided that their states should lead the way through experimentation. On July 8th, 2014, Washington State opened it's first recreational stores. Their sale portions, would fund research on reform's effects. the state built test equipment starting day one with a dedicated funding stream to provide continuity and political independence. attempting to create a multifaceted picture, that is taking place across multiple state agencies including DSHS ,the department of health, and liquor control board just not relying on one point of view or information source but focusing on a wider spectrum of the issues that can help focus discipline for the political debate. policymakers seek to empower themselves proactively regulating legal marijuana; nevertheless, inform and influence the informational battles that will surround legal marijuana. can you say economic benefits, Washington state will bring in nearly $50 million in new taxes, initially proceeds being used to better education, such as , new schools, higher teacher salaries, extra school activity's, and school based clubs. legalized marijuana frees up law enforcement to seek out more destructive illegal drugs such as cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine. legalized marijuana will help by reducing...

...Should Marijuana Be Legalized? One of the major and most talked about concerns in the United States today is whether or not marijuana should be legalized. As news stories continue to take a NO stand, many states are debating and deciding to go ahead and legalize recreational marijuana. I take a stand saying YES, marijuana should be legalized for many non-controversial reasons. Cannabis dates back to 6000 BC when the Chinese used cannabis seeds in their food (2). Since then it has evolved from creating clothes to smoking for medical and recreational purposes. The United States is one of the few countries where cannabis is actually illegal. There is no real answer on why it is illegal and the answer tends to change every time the topic is brought up. Most officials say they are preventing people from harming themselves or others but I feel if that’s their case then alcohol and caffeine shall be banned too. Marijuana is also very expensive to enforce. Milton Friedman and a group of over 500 economists stated that it cost the government just about 7.7 billion dollars a year just to enforce the drug (1). That seems to be way too much spending just to enforce a cheap and wildly grown plant. Enforcement also consists of over 700,000 arrests per year just for possession. Many people are being charged as first time offenders and being taken from their jobs and families just because they decided to get a little high. Since 1996, 19 states have legalized medical Marijuana. Medical...

...The U.S. government spends as much as $20 billion per year to fight the war on Marijuana. Marijuana has been a hot topic lately, and the debates really been heating up. The main question is how much would our country benefit from the legalization of recreational marijuana? Our citizens and political leaders have a chance to cash in on one of the biggest cash crops in existence today. Legalizing marijuana for recreational use has the potential to be very lucrative and beneficial to our country and society. To fully understand the debate on legalizing marijuana, you must know what marijuana is and how it came to be outlawed in the U.S. in the first place. Marijuana is a plant that produces flowers or buds that can be smoked to produce...

Today I've chosen a development that affects not only the world around me but also the choices of friends and people who support the use of recreational marijuana. There are two states in the US that has legalized recreational use of Marijuana. The first state to legalize this gateways drug was our Nation’s capital. Following in the footsteps a few years later the great state of Colorado joined the movement. Today I will be focusing strictly on the state of Colorado. There is seemingly more publicity and problems for the state...

...Marijuana is a plant that has been smoked for thousands of years. In 1920 between 1930 recreational marijuana was legal and became associated with jazz music, but in 1937 recreational marijuana became illegal. More than 61% of Americans support legalizing marijuana. Legalizing recreational marijuana will reduce the crime rate, ensure product safety, and create much needed jobs. The crime rate would go lower in states with legal recreational marijuana because marijuana is less harmful then alcohol. The crime rate would go down because it would be less DUI and more would be driving while high and most people are more focused when they are high. Traffic deaths dropped 11% on average in states that legalized medical marijuana. Legalizing marijuana end the costly of enforcement on marijuana because no one would try to steal the marijuana from the store because they would be a steady price and wouldn’t jack the prices up. There would be less drug deal and street gangs happening outside and the jail rate for illegal marijuana would go down. It would be less bad drug deals where people get shot that would happen because if someone wants marijuana then they would go to store. Studies show that medical marijuana dispensaries decreased crime in their neighborhoods because of an increased security presence and...

...The existing supply avenues will most likely decrease but will still be around in the background for the better on the illegal side and should increase for the legal side. Legal users will be able to get it illegally from an existing supply avenue. If marijuana were legalized for medicinal purposes only, most people would still use illegal marijuana for recreational use. However, I think both purposes (medicinal & recreational) should be legalized with restrictions on buyers and growers just as there are restrictions on cigarettes and alcohol. In my opinion, the demand for marijuana would definitely increase if the drug were legalized for either purpose. You then would have people who would try marijuana for recreational purposes for the first time simply because it is legal. Legalizing marijuana would attract more users for both purposes creating a new group and need for demands. Cannabis has been legalized for a long time in the Netherlands, so we should consider the usage there compared to other countries under marijuana prohibition. Legalization would lead to a positive revenue impact generating billions of dollars in federal and state tax revenue annually. However, there is no evidence that the demand would increase or decrease, for example, California is the 8th largest economy in the world and already has a multi-billion dollar marijuana industry. To suggest legalization will spark a sustainable increase in demand for grow systems is to suggest legalization will...

...Many people wonder what marijuana is and if it should it be legalized. Marijuana comes from the hemp plant, it is the dried leaves of female flowers. Marijuana has been called a gateway drug for years, making many people believe that if they use it they will then become addicted to hard drugs. However, unlike cigarettes that contain tobacco and other illegal drugs such as speed, cocaine, and heroin, marijuana is not addictive. Marijuana is a misunderstood plant that many people assume is dangerous. The usage of marijuana (also known as cannabis) can actually be very beneficial not only to oneself but also to their country. The legalization of marijuana in the United States would benefit the States society economically, socially, and medically. The economic benefits that the legalization of marijuana would bring to the U.S are enormous. Oregon, Colorado, and Washington have already legalized marijuana for both medical and recreational use. When the rest of the U.S legalizes marijuana and places the high tax on it, it will create a larger budget for every state. In the state of Colorado, According to the article Experimenting with Pot: The State of Colorado's Legalization of Marijuana “By regulate marijuana like alcohol the state collect about $134 million in taxes from medical and recreational marijuana sales in fiscal year 2014-2015” HICKENLOOPER, G. W. (2014). If all of the states in the U.S was able to bring in at least that much extra revenue imagine what could be done. It...
