As I was picking my freshman courses during the summer, I had to enroll in a required ENG 105 course. Immediately, I thought that this course would be easy because all we will do is write essays. I thought I would be fully prepared by just going over Grammar rules and standardized test tips. In retrospect, after I have attended the class for almost the entire semester, I never expected to learn a new process of writing. During my time at high school, we never went over multiple stages of reflections, revisions, or writing skills. I usually just wrote for my enjoyment or for an assignment. I strongly believe that if I had learned these processes in high school, my papers would have benefitted greatly. As this semester comes to an end, I look back at everything I have accomplished in this class. I have acquired many writing techniques through annotations, in – class assignments, and multiple essays. Because of this, I have improved tremendously as a writer. Throughout the time I have spent in this writing course, I was reminded of how effective writing can be. As I further analyze my writing, I realized that I have learned how to become a real writer. The essays included will demonstrate the tremendous amount of strength I have gained in writing this semester.
I believe that I am good organizing my writing in terms of placement and topics of each body paragraph. An example of this is in my first essay about my literacy sponsors. I organized the essay by beginning each body paragraph with a sentence that corresponds to the last sentence of the paragraph that precedes it. I feel like this type of structure is widely used and is easy to follow to be able to hold the reader’s attention. Any writer will be able to easily transition into the next paragraph while knowing what is being talked about. Regarding paragraph placement, my second essay shows my attention to this

Reflection Essay

...Reflective Essay The aim of this essay is to reflect on an incident, which took place in a hospital setting during the first month of my Foundation Degree Assistant Practitioner course. It will explore the importance of communication amongst the health care professionals and how a good nursing documentation is an integral part of nursing. It will also demonstrate how reflection enabled me to make sense of and learn from this experience, as well as identify any further learning developments needed to improve my practice and achieve the level of competency needed for when I qualify as an assistant practitioner. While discussing the knowledge underpinning practice, evidence based literature will be reviewed to support my discussion and for the purpose of reflection the essay will be written in the first person. Spouse, J, et al (2008). Jonhs, C (2009) defined reflection as learning through our every day experiences, towards realising one’s vision of desirable practice as a lived reality. He also added that it is a critical and a flexible process of self inquiry and transformation of being and becoming the practitioner you desire to be. However, Ghaye, T et al. (2000) stated that for the health care professionals to develop a more reflective posture, they must fully embrace both the principles and the practices of reflection. It is about becoming more aware of how we learn and how this affects what we think, feel and do. There are different models for reflection; some are more...

Reflection Essay

...Unit 11: Reflection Essay At the start of this semester my feelings towards writing altogether was extremely negative, whether it was writing a short one paragraph letter or a five page essay I wanted nothing to do with it. Never seeing the point, I have always had a hard time just starting the essay. I could not find the inspiration to write what was needed to create the work of literature my teacher expected of me. With that being said, I can honestly admit that I have never actually completed any writing assignments out of class and next to none of the assignments done in class. Needless to say I have probably failed all but one year in English classes, and the one I passed was because the teacher received a death threat from a student and left the school. Most of the teachers simply spent his/her time keeping me in line so as not to distract the other students. This semester, however, I definitely feel my writing has improved. I have a better understanding of how to structure my entire paper, whether its sentence structure or paragraph layout, what parts of speech should not be used in a paper and to limit my use of contractions. This class has also taught me to spend more time outside of school working on perfecting my work which I plan to take into later classes. All of these changes were made possible because for the first time I had a teacher who was able to make the subject enjoyable and fun. I definitely had the easiest time with the assignments that allowed me to...

Reflection Essay

...English 1320 Unit 11 Exercise 1: Reflection Essay Antonio Parks R. Schaffer 03/06/14 I really didn’t care for writing at all before this course. I had not written anything longer than a sentence in over 35 years. My mind was clouded and I didn’t take time to write. When asking me “What type of essay had I written before this course”? My response is very simple. I have not written anything, well if you count writing a journal in the 8th grade then that would be it. My writing has improved immensely. I can write and wasn’t aware that I could. The essay that was the easiest to write for me was the memoir. I found that writing about something that I knew about gave me more control over my audience. The essay that would have been the hardest for me would have been romance. I guess I’m not quit in touch with my other side to write romance. My attitude toward writing at the end of the course is one of great interest. I have learned to enjoy it. I believe if I actually spent the time to write, I could get lot better and enjoy it more. Using my ePortfolio in the future will help me prepare for the job market in the future. Listing my classes, accomplishments, and posting my resume are the primary reasons for the portfolio. Thank you Mr.Schaffer for helping me realize again how important writing is in my everyday life. I will do my best to continue to...

Reflection Essay

...Unit 11 Exercise 1: Reflection Essay Over the course of these last eleven weeks I have discovered more about my writing skills than I thought I had. In the beginning I had neutral feelings about how well I would do in this course. I’ve always known that I had good writing techniques, but have been out of school for over 10 years and wasn’t sure if I could still write like how I used to. When I was in high school I remember writing essays, research papers, and even memoirs but was only the basics of how to properly write. It gave me practice on my vocabulary as well as sentence and paragraph structure. It also allowed my imagination and thoughts to come out on paper and let the reader indulge in my stories. But how good of a writer was I? After taking a course called Composition 1 in college, I found that my writing skills; even though pretty good, had to be improved. I feel that my writing has improved due to learning how to properly brainstorm ideas and set up my research findings before I put them on my final paper. I also learned how to cite my findings which is a skill they don’t stress about in High School. Writing Essays, or Research Papers aren’t difficult for me, however I must say that writing a Memoir would have to be the most difficult because I don’t like talking about myself let alone have people know personal details of my life. Now that I’m at the end of my course in Composition 1 My attitude and feelings toward writing now has changed. I feel more...

Reflection Essay

...hard this semester. Uncomfortable at first, I gradually caught on to the quick but efficient pace our teacher had required from us. Although there was a significant amount of work this semester, I look back now with a smile. I feel that all that work truly paid off, because now, I feel confident that I could write a much better essay then I use to. And it’s very important for me because it was the first English class that I ever took in my academic experience. I have learned how to focus on well combining of grammar, writing mechanics, and citation format. Expanding a writing ability can be difficult and often times frustrating, but when done well, writing can change the opinions of thousands. In Introduction to Writing 101S I learned that the first step in writing an essay is to read and comment the articles that belongs to the essay’s topic. Another important element of an essay is the thesis statement. It is always the most important sentence. I have learned the necessity of combining the most important information out of an article into one sentence. The thesis statement captures the reader’s attention and sets the tone for the rest of the essay. Over the course of the semester, I struggled with writing the informative thesis. I could not seem...

Reflection Essay

...When I was first told to find a topic for my academic research essay, I was perplexed since there were a large number of topics to consider. At first, I decided to think about global warming which had always been a popular topic. However, without much academic background on it, I found it quite difficult for me to write. Therefore, I made a decision to search for something in sociology, in which I’ve been always interested. Suddenly, a hotly debated issue came into my mind: Should death penalty be abolished in China? Then I determined to take a look at this. To begin with, I typed in “death penalty” on Google and a plenty of results appeared. Unfortunately there was too much information to read, so I tried to look for “death penalty” under One Search which is a web page of PolyU’s library at http://onesearch.lib.polyu.edu.hk. Also, all kinds of materials including videos and books, which I do not require, were displayed, so I returned to the search bar and clicked on Articles to narrow down the range and searched again. All articles related to death penalty were shown on the screen. I clicked on the first article which was released in 2014. Nevertheless, this article was not really good as it was filled with personal opinions. As a result, I had to go back to the former page. I noticed an article marked with Peer Reviewed Journal, so I clicked on it. After reading, I found that it was indeed a suitable essay with good structure. Then, when I tried to save that one as my...

Reflection Essay

...Sandhya Pandey Dr. Boone 16 December 2015 Analyzing Before this class, English 110, I was accustomed to writing the traditional five paragraph essay about whatever topic my teacher had told me to take a side on. And as always I had become used to being praised for my argumentative essays. But, English 110 had something completely different in store for me. It challenged me to think beyond my boundaries, and join forces and communicate with the entire class to write about my topic and somehow make connections with them all. In Module I, about the article “writing and thinking analytically” By David Rosenwasser and Jill Stephen really showed me as a writer how to analyze; which was as the class went on was quite a difficult task for me. I had to understand “To analyze something is to ask what that something means” (Rosenwasser & Stephen, 1), I had become familiar with the way my thought process worked, and how I analyzed day to day things. And now I realized that analyzing is something we all do all the time without even thinking about it. And to become a better writer is to “become more aware of your own thinking process, building on skills that you already possess and eliminating habits that get in the way” (Rosenwasser & Stephen, 1). This class helped me to stay away from making judgements and steer closer to asking myself questions and explore outside of just agree and disagree. From doing the different assignments, I really found myself engaging more and...

This has had a profound impact in my writing this semester. It has given me comfort in writing difficult prompts from moodle or readings in our books. This e-portfolio assignment is the best work that I done all semester. It demonstrated what I’ve learned through the explanation of the reflections and the revision of the assignment that are improved drastically. When I was first writing my revisions, I was looking over the areas that need the most fixing. I read the comments on the previous assignments and used that as a guide. Two areas that needed improvement was the thesis and the supporting details. When revising my second assignment,...

Reflection on Mentorship Practice

...Examples of Reflective Writing Example 1 I arrived on the ward at 7:30 ready to begin a 12-hour shift. After receiving handover, my mentor assigned me the job of bathing Mr B with the help of a healthcare assistant. Mr B has Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), a progressive disease of the nervous system with rapid deterioration due to spongiform encephalopathy. He is not expected to live to Christmas, even though he is only 19 years old. He is mentally aware of what is going on but is physically unable to demonstrate activities of daily living, including eating and drinking, has limited communication skills and is doubly incontinent. He is unsafe on his feet so mobilises with a wheelchair. I approached Mr B’s bed and asked his consent to take him for a bath. While the bath was running we began helping him to undress. He looked rather nervous. At the thought of myself being in his position, being the same age as him, I began to feel embarrassed too. I thought that I could not possibly be a professional individual if I let my embarrassment and sympathy get in the way of my nursing care. We assisted Mr B into the bath and started his wash. I knew he was uncomfortable and wanted to be able to wash himself, but was unable to do so. I was finding it difficult to look him in the eye, especially when it came to washing his genitalia. I tried to ease this by making conversation, but in a way this made matters worse. After the bath we dried Mr B, dressed him and returned him...

How to Write a Personal Statement

...How to Write a Personal Statement
 by
UNM Prof. Elizabeth Archuleta Through a personal statement, you introduce yourself to the university; it reflects your personality and intellect. It is important that you read each question carefully and make every effort to understand and respond to it with well-considered responses and in a persuasive enough manner to hold the reader’s interest. 1. Understand and Explain Yourself
One of the main problems when writing is that applicants fail to take a thorough and analytical look at themselves and their objectives. Admission committee members are looking for interesting, insightful, revealing, and non-generic essays that suggest you have successfully gone through a process of careful reflection and self-examination. 2. Set Yourself Apart
Committees are looking for something PERSONAL and ANALYTICAL. This means sharing information you rarely share with others and assessing your life more critically than usual. This approach is key to a successful personal statement. Exercise: In order to begin writing your personal statement – your story—you’ll need to answer some basic questions to prepare yourself. Questions: * What is special, unique, distinctive, or impressive about you or your life story? What details of your life (personal or family problems/ history, any genuinely notable accomplishments, people or events that have shaped you or influenced your goals) might help the committee better understand you or help set you apart...

Reflective Practice

...al 2002). Reflection is a necessary process in order to comply with Post-registration education and practice (PREP), continuing professional development standard, as required by the NMC (2006). Reflection can therefore be regarded as a fundamental process for all professionals registered within the NMC. This essay specifically focuses upon reflection in relation to the student Specialist community public health nurse (SCPHN). Reflective practice in nursing can be guided by models of reflection. Using a model or framework can be beneficial in aiding practioners and students of nursing and health care to, reflect upon incidents, and critically analyse those incidents, therefore helping the practioner to learn and move on (Ashby 2006). This essay aims to explore the concept of reflection. It will discuss and critically analyse Gibbs (1998) theoretical model of reflection whilst also considering other models and their use in relation to the role of a student SCPHN working within a children and family community setting. Reflective practice is not a new concept. It originated in the 1930's from work carried out by American educationalist John Dewey. Dewey (1933) developed the idea of reflection as a way of learning in education. This idea has since been drawn upon in the works of many others; Schon (1983) similarly highlights the idea of reflection as a way of bridging the gap between theory to underpin professional practice. Other definitions include: “Reflection is a process...

Critically Evaluating Reflective Practice

...[pic] Reflective Practice EDU 2071-N Critically Evaluating Reflective Practice. Leigh William Adams. M1106275 D.O.S: 10/12/2015 Word count: 2000 Introduction. This essay will look at the use of reflective practice in a vocational construction setting, it will look at various practitioners’ theories and how they may be implemented into the current strategy. Reflective practice can be an essential tool in vocational based professional learning settings where people learn from their own experiences, rather than from formal learning or knowledge transfer. It may be the most important source of personal professional development and improvement. It is also an important way to bring together theory and practice; through reflection a person is able to see and label forms of thought and theory within the milieu of their work. The essay will also look at the use of reflective practice with learners at a behavioural school. Each section will cover different topics, section one will cover the understanding of critical reflection, section two will show how critical reflection is used for behaviour, section three shows its use in the construction industry and section four will briefly cover other authors and their respective models. Section 1. In order to be effective teachers must be reflective; they must continuously review their practice, discuss it with their colleagues, consider their learners’ responses and seek to develop...
