Part I
“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” (John 14:6, NIV)
Summary
From the very first time man sinned in Eden, the question of deception, truth, and lies has been a difficult one. Our enemy, satan, is the father of lies. Jesus Himself said to the Jews, “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” (John 8:44, NIV) Jesus is the truth; satan is the deceiver. The question remains, who is our real father? We want our answer to be Jesus, and once we receive Him as Lord and Savior our salvation is sealed, and our names are written in the Book of Life, yet who’s character do we reflect? It seems a lie can often be excused if it is said with good intentions. However, lying is never excused or encouraged in the Bible, on the contrary, many are the warnings against it including the ninth commandment which exhorts us to never “give false testimony”. (Exodus 20:16, NIV). Although not an easy task in this fallen world, it should be a Christian’s desire to be more like Jesus, and “speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ”. (Ephesians 4:15, NIV).
Part II
Abraham’s Lies As the Bible relates in Genesis chapter 12, Abram and his wife Sarai (who’s names God would later change to Abraham and Sarah) were forced to travel to Egypt due to a great famine in the land of Canaan. Sarai was extremely beautiful, so Abram, afraid of being murdered by someone who would like to take Sarai as a wife, instructed her to lie and tell the Egyptian people that they were sister and brother. And indeed, Pharaoh himself thought Sarai was beautiful, and after giving Abram gifts of sheep, cattle, camels, and servants, took her into his household as a wife. God was gracious, though, and saved both Abram and Sarai from disgrace despite their lies. God brought about serious plagues on Pharaoh and his household and through them, the truth was revealed. It was undeniably wrong for Abram to ask his wife Sarai to lie for him. It not only showed a deceptive heart in Abram, but also a lack of trust that God would take care of him no matter the circumstances. It was the intention of his heart to deceive Pharaoh in order to save himself. This encounter served to teach Abram that God was in control and would bring to pass His promises, and that lies would have consequences, whether to oneself, or others. Once the truth was revealed, and Pharaoh gave Sarai back to Abram, the plagues disappeared. According to Yair Zakovitch, Abram’s selfish concern for his own safety over that of his wife was a foreshadowing of what would afflict his people at a later time in Egypt when once again, God would send plagues down on Pharaoh.1 Zakovitch concludes that “God, who determines the course of events, has changed Abraham’s white lies into unintended prophecies, thereby removing the need for any punishment”.1
Part III
Rahab’s Deceptions The role that Rahab played in the story of the Israelite’s conquest of Jericho is an important one. After 40 years spent roaming in the desert, the Israelites finally have a leader who is listening to God and taking them into the Promised Land. Joshua sends two spies into the city of Jericho and Rahab, a prostitute, hides them on the roof under stocks of flax. She is then questioned by the King’s messengers at which point she lies when she states, “Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they had come from. At dusk, when it was time to close the city gate, they left. I don’t know which way they went. Go after them quickly. You may catch up with them.” (Joshua 2:4-5, NIV). The story goes on to explain how Jericho was then taken, and Rahab and her family were saved. Without a doubt, Rahab lies to save the spies. Not once, but twice. Whether or not the spies realized she lied is not known, since they were hiding on the roof. Of course, God knew that she sinned, and He knew she was also a prostitute. And yet, despite her sinful nature He showed grace and saved her despite her lies. As 1 Samuel 16:7 explains, “the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.” (ESV) God knew Rahab was a sinner, and part of a pagan society, and yet she is best known for her love for God when she said, “Know therefore today, and lay it to your heart, that the LORD is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other” (Deuteronomy 4:39, ESV). God showed mercy and rewarded her heart, not her sin. Not only does God honor Rahab, and save her and her family, but she grows to know Him, and become part of the Israelite people. Not only that, she also becomes part of the lineage of Jesus when she marries Salmon, an Israelite, and has a son Boaz, King David’s great-grandfather. In Hebrews 11:31 she is honored in the “hall of faith” not for lying but for receiving the men with peace. James 2:25 goes on to ask, “was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction?” (NIV). “The approval, therefore, of the biblical writers is not based on admiration for “tricky” behavior or quick thinking. It is grounded on an appreciation of the fact that Rahab made a moral decision to leave lo-ammi (not-God’s-people) and join the ammi (God’s people)”.2 The Bible celebrates Rahab’s heart, not her sin.
Part IV
Absolutes, Commandments, and Guidelines The Word of God does not condone falsehoods. In fact, liars are grouped with those who will be sent to Hell if they do not repent. Revelation 21:8 exhorts that, “the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars--they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death." It is our duty and honor to “take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” (2 Cor. 10:5, NIV) as well as being renewed “in the attitude of your minds.” (Ephesians 4:23). This is easier said than done, of course, but thankfully we have a gracious and merciful God, who as He did with Rahab, looks at our intentions and our heart. The Bible is full of examples and exhortations to honor the truth. Verses such as “The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.” (Psalm 145:18, NIV) Or Proverbs 19:9 which warns us that “a false witness will not go unpunished, and whoever pours out lies will perish.” (NIV) Despite our shortcomings and sin, God promises “if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9, NIV).

Part V
Health Professional Lessons Within the healthcare world, there are many lessons that can be learned from Abram and Rahab’s story. Abram story portrays the very real consequences that come from wrong choices made. God may use, and even have the grace to save us, from bad decisions. Many times though, these wrong choices bring consequences to us or those we love. Healthcare professionals especially need to be vigilant. Lying to a patient may seem tempting, and perhaps even the nicest thing to do, but because it is a deception, it could have long term and unforeseen consequences. There are plenty of occasions when a nurse or assistant has unwittingly informed a patient of the truth, and brought a sense of confusion and loss.3 Loss of trust between doctors and patients, the complex web of lies to cover other lies, and miscommunication problems due to partial truths can all lead to disaster. Even though Rahab’s story can be misinterpreted to mean that telling a lie can be beneficial, it’s true message of faithfulness and redemption despite lies and sin can be of great encouragement to those working in the medical and healthcare fields. No matter the mistakes made in dealing with patients, or disclosing right or wrong information, as children of God we can rest assured that He will use our mistakes for good. God will be just and right to forgive us, so that we can try once again to meet His standards. As He did with Rahab, God can also look into our heart and know our intentions towards Him despite our sin and brokenness. Jesus is the truth and is full of truth. “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14, NIV).

Reflection Paper 2

...Reflection Paper #2 Introduction On this reflection paper, the topics I choose were the “Baptism of the Holy Spirit” and the “Rapture”. I choose these topics because they both bring topics of debate with them. There are many different views on these two topics and I will try to shed some light on them. Through Biblical research and theological definitions, we will try to discover the purpose and meanings of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and the Rapture. The first topic of discussion is the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. This topic stirs up much debate in the denominational realms of the church. There are many different views and standpoints on this topic. John 1:33 states that when John the Baptist, after witnessing the descent of the Holy Spirit as a dove at the baptism of Jesus, recorded these words: “He that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizes with the Holy Ghost”. Later Jesus promised His disciples, “Ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence” (Acts 1:5). On the day of Pentecost, the disciples had a number of experiences involving the Holy Spirit, including the baptism of the Holy Spirit. The disciples spoke in tongues to address the gospel of Christ to many different nations in attendance of Pentecost. This event was the start of the church and its spread of the gospel of Christ to all nations. Many Christians today have confused...

...Holly K. Ballowe Professor Benjamin Quinn Theology 104 5 March 2015 Reflection Paper 2 I. Introduction Throughout this entire course, I have definitely received a better understanding of Scripture. Not only has my faith strengthened, God has also been working a miracle in my life. In this particular essay, my goal is to discuss the effects of prayer, as well as reconciliation. II. Part One a. Theological Definition The theological definition of prayer, according to the Web Bible Encyclopedia is “a conversation with God; the intercourse of the soul with God, not in contemplation or mediation, but in direct address to him”. b. Biblical Foundation The words pray or prayer is mentioned in the Old and New Testament a total of 313 times. In 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 God even states, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” c. Practical Application Since I became a believer in 2007, I constantly have been trying to have a better prayer life. However, in November 2012, my prayer life became number one in my life. Without going into too much detail, I began dating a guy whom my parents did not approve of. During this time, when my parents’ relationship with me was shattered, God began to give me strength to seek Him with my decision as to whether or not to continue seeing this young man. I sought after not man’s wisdom, but God’s alone and over a year’s time, God began to give...

...Reflection Paper Thomas Stevens Liberty University Theology 104 Prof. Scott Manor June 08, 2014 Reflection Paper 1. Introduction: This reflection paper that I am writing has given me pause as I had thought about the two topics that I would like to discuss. I have gained a better understanding about many of the topics, but I have chosen to write about Prayer and Sin Nature. Man is naturally a sinner and as we sin, we can use prayer to ask God for forgiveness. I believe these two topics relate to each other in so many ways that they would flow together easily as I write about them. The first topic I would like to discuss is Prayer. 2. Part One: Prayer The theological definition of prayer can be summarized as a conversation with God. Prayer may be oral or mental, occasional or constant, and informal or formal (Easton’s Bible Dictionary, Bible Gateway.com). The Bible gives a lot of leeway when it comes to how we pray or what we say to God in our prayers. The Biblical Foundation can be defined by how many times it is mentioned throughout the Bible and there are some very powerful examples of prayer represented. Samson prayed to God and God showed him a well to quench his burning thirst, and lived on to judge Israel (NKJV, Judges 15:18-20). Matthew: 6 gave us the Lord’s Prayer as a prayer to model ours after and give us a good foundation as to how to pray correctly. Practical application just means that prayer is a communication tool Christians use to communicate...

Theo 104 Reflection Paper 2

...Jenna Erickson THEO 104-D14 5/4/15 Reflection Paper 2 I. Introduction For my second reflection paper, similar to my first, I am choosing two topics in which can somewhat go hand in hand with each other. The two topics I am choosing are: Creation and the Fall of Man. In today’s primarily secular culture, the teachings of creation and the fall of man are topics that are too commonly misrepresented and misunderstood amongst many. Both creation and the fall of man are fundamental foundations to establishing a Christian biblical worldview. In two separate sections, I will present creation and the fall of man, while going in-depth into the theological definitions, biblical foundations, and practical applications for both. I will tackle these topics in the order in which they happened, and discuss how this relates to myself and how this class has helped me to get to this point of a better understanding of the scriptures teachings. II. Part One – Creation a. Theological Definition The ideology of creation preaches that the one true God created ex nihilo, or out of nothing, the universe and everything within it. God created the “heavens, the earth, the fish, the various kinds of species of animals, and man as the crown of His creation” (Townes, Origin). This doctrine claims that there was nothing before His creation; no time, substance, space, energy, beings, area or etc. God’s existence alone stood before creation and is solely responsible for everything there is and continues...

Introduction In today’s predominately secular culture, the doctrine of creation and the doctrine of the immaterial “heart” of man are topics too commonly misrepresented and are profoundly misunderstood amongst many Christians today. The doctrine of creation and the doctrine of the immaterial nature of man are fundamental cornerstones within the Christian worldview that promulgate a rational coherent, consistent doctrine that when properly taught can equip Christians today with important theological knowledge that facilitates their pursuit of effective ministry. Divided into two separate topics, I will subsequently expound upon the Christian doctrine of creation and the doctrine on the immaterial nature of man, outlining the theological definition, biblical foundation, and practical application for each. II. Doctrine of Creation a. Theological Definition The doctrine of creation propagates that an eternal, infinite and immaterial Triune God created ex nihilo, or out of nothing, the universe and everything within it. God created the “heavens, the earth, the fish, the various kinds of species of animals, and man as the crown of His creation” (Townes, Origin). This doctrine asserts that there was no preexistent material existed before creation, emphasizing God’s existence alone before creation, and affirming His infinitude, eternality, self-existence, self-sufficiency, omnipotence...

Focus 2 Career Reflection Paper

...Focus 2 Assignment – Reflection Upon completing the Focus 2 career assessment program, I am quite impressed at the quality of information it presents. It allowed me to not only look at careers that would fit my personality, but also those that take into consideration the fields I am already interested in. Also, as with any form of self-assessment, there were strengths and weaknesses that I did not expect based on how I feel I live my life currently. Beginning chronologically, the program had me complete two subjective, current measures of my professional career. Specifically, the Career Planning Readiness results were some I found a bit embarrassing, given I really have not done a lot to investigate the career I foresee as much as I should. I have concluded that it is a tricky balance to focus on school while also looking beyond consistently. As a result, I have noticed myself increasingly trying to find more information about physical therapy, but I know my best resource would be physical observations of their services. The Academic Strengths portion...

...Team A Weekly Reflection HRM 513 Team A Weekly Reflection The purpose of this paper is to summarize the key discussion points from the learning objectives during week two. This week’s topic focused on the functions of a job description. Objective 1: Explain how a job analysis is used to create a job description. A job analysis is defined as “the process used to break a job into its component duty or functional areas and the task statements associated with those duty areas” (Hartley, 2010). The job analysis identifies requirements and duties involves in the job. It will also establish guidelines on the education level, skill set, and work environment. The completed job analysis will be used to create the job description.  The US Department of Interior (1998) website states that a job analysis “can be used to identify documents and other elements vital to the candidate evaluation, referral and selection process, such as measurement methods and interview requirements”. Each member on the team understands how the job analysis is used and the purpose. A job analysis provides an understanding and specifications for a position. A job analysis consists of a job description and the specifications required. The team agrees that an analysis should be reviewed periodically to remain current and not waste unnecessary resources. Potential problems exist with a job analysis. The accuracy and stability of an analysis could prevent a precise job description...

...Professor: Dr Moulay- AFTS370-01 3/14/2013 Reaction/Reflection Paper #2 : Lowney, chs. 11 & 12, Menocal, pp. 174-188 We learned that Muslim’s invasion of Spain provided economic, architectural and social developments in this area. In these readings (Lowney’s and Menocal’s) we can see that Muslims also had significant importance in medical and mathematical world. Maimonides was one of the most important physicians in Jewish society and he had many intellectual contributions to Judaism. He had important position as a physician. The important part is that where Maimonides inherited his wisdom? His medical secrets were based on ancient authorities like Galen and Hippocrates which were forgotten in the West but revived in the Islamic East. There were many successful philosopher-doctors in Islamic world like Ibn Sina (Avicenna in the West). Ibn Sina’s book was translated by Gerard as a Canon of Medicine. It was the Europe’s first translation about health and medicine. Ibn Sina’s (Avicenna) knowledge pushed European’s medicine forward. Moreover, there was another Spanish Muslim Abu-l-Qasim, also known as Abulcasis who became the practical companion to Avicenna’s theoretical Canon. He have gotten his hands dirty and actually practiced surgeries like amputating limbs, removing bladder stones and artificial teeth from beef bone thanks to Ibn...

Reflection Instructions

...Reflection Paper Assignments Due Dates: March 20, April 3, May 1 Overview These reflection papers are the chance for you to review your recent journal entries (or the sum total, if that helps) and to synthesize some thread of thinking or learning that you find in there. You might build on a single entry or on something bridging multiple entries, but the point is to capture something that you are learning. We expect the paper to have some over-arching, coherent argument so that it is not simply a string of thoughts. A string of thoughts is fine for your journal entries, but here we do want some synthesis. You should not spend time summarizing your activities, unless that is essential for your argument. Grading Criteria The criteria we will use to evaluate the papers are listed below. Note that you do not have to address all of these criteria in one paper. We want you to address all of them over the course of the semester, but any single paper can focus on only one or two of these. Regardless of what you choose to write your reflection synthesis on, your paper must demonstrate clear, coherent argumentation. 1. Expression of Learning 2. Discussion and/or synthesis of course readings 3. Reflection on assumptions and cultural frames of reference 4. Connection to proposal process Word Count The reflection papers, except for the final one, should be at least 500 words, but not a lot longer than that. The final paper should be around...

...Experiement 9 Melodi Hay Tuesday 2-3:50pm October 27, 2014 Purpose: The purpose of the experiment is to study the laws of reflection, refraction, and total internal reflection; to measure the focal lengths of the mirrors with convex and concave surfaces; and to measure the index of refraction of water. Theory: If a ray of light is incident on a flat surface: the angle of incidence a is the angle that the incident ray makes with respect to the normal, which is a line drawn perpendicular to the surface at the point of incidence. The angle of reflection r is the angle that the reflected ray makes with the normal. The incident ray, the reflected ray, and the normal to the surface all lie in the same plane, called the place of incidence, and the angle of reflection r equals the angle of incidence a – the Law of Reflection describes the behavior of the incident and reflected rays: a = r When light strikes the interface between two transparent materials, such as air and water, the light generally divides into two parts. Part of the light is reflected, with the angle of reflection equaling the angle of incidence. The remainder is transmitted across the interface. If the incident ray does not strike the interface at normal incidence, the transmitted ray has a different direction than the incident ray. The ray that enters the second material is said to be refracted. When light travels from a material with refractive index a into a material with refractive index b,...
