Religion Service Paper

Due to my watching of certain horror elements, I have a rather irrelevant fear of the elderly. I believe it is due to my hesitance toward the letting go of my youth and that eventually I have to realize that things change and that someday I might be one of those residents that require assistance. It is not that big of a fear that I scream in benevolent horror when I see my grandparents, however it does serve as a slight hindrance when being near those who are considered extremely old. There are seldom moments of pure fear when I am near the elderly. Yet, I do service that requires being near older people more than often despite my fear.
Last year for my service, I did most of my hours at Healthwin. This year I decided to continue the same type of work. However, this year, I decided to carry on my service at Wellbrooke across the street from school. On thing I did was help the residents who aren't able to feed themselves at social events. Another thing I did was invite residents to social events that were taking place on the first floor. Often times I …show more content…
One of them I helped eat on my first day of volunteering. While I was there talking to her after she finished, she told me all about her children and her grandchildren. As I was getting ready to leave, she suggested that I visit her again and that she enjoyed the time I took out of my day to come volunteer. Another resident that personally affected me was a resident I first met while looking for residents interested in playing Jeopardy. We had one major thing in common and that was a love for cats. She was very friendly and urged us to pet her cat. I have visited her quite often and everytime she tells the same story about how to she worked at the same place for her entire life. In the end, they had an impact that I would not be able to get anywhere

Inclusion Activities Workbook

...Office of Human Resources Diversity & Inclusion Activities Diversity and Inclusion activities are simple ways to get people talking and listening to one another. It is only through understanding each other that we truly gain knowledge and can move forward together. While we can’t always walk in someone else’s shoes, we can take the time to inquire about how the shoe fits and if its path is smooth or riddled with pebbles. Social Justice • PO Box 6031, 412 Knapp Hall • Morgantown, WV 26506 • 304-293-8948 http://socialjustice.ext.wvu.edu/ Objectives Office of Human Resources There are many reasons you may choose to use and icebreaker or activity: to warm up or relax your group, to bring your group back together after a break or intense session, to introduce the next segment or to present your group with challenges that, as a team (together or divided into small groups or teams), your group must either overcome or address. Age & Appropriateness Icebreakers and activities are adaptable to your group and situation. When considering an icebreaker or activity, be sure to keep specifics about your group in mind, such as age and meeting focus. Please don’t overlook an icebreaker or activity because you think the group is too mature for it. Many groups, once aware that it’s ok to relax and have fun, will enjoy the experience of “being able to let go,” if only for a moment. Personal Reflection Paper

...Personal Reflection Paper BSHS 345 August 26, 2014 Personal Reflection Paper Invidious comparison is the act of comparing one person to others according to their class, race, sex, or religion. This act can have a negative effect on people who are aware of it. Growing up in California, where the predominant Hispanic races were of Mexican and Central American origin, I was constantly compared to those Hispanic backgrounds. This was frustrating because I am Colombian and the Colombian Culture is very different from the Central American culture. My mind could not understand why people would compare me to them if I am South American. The traditions, food, music, slang, and even accents were different. American non-Hispanic people would call me, among many other things, a “dirty Mexican” or “wet back.” This was extremely frustrating because neither one of my parents hopped the border nor were they dirty. My young mind did not know how that these people were just ignorant so my frustration turned into anger and total repulsion of races of those other backgrounds and countries. A sense of insecurity and even self-hate would overcome me. I did not want to be Hispanic, I wanted to be white, and I wanted to be accepted. My way of seeing things changed in 2006 when the Immigration Equality Movements became popular. Latino activists would speak at events and in a sense give the people a sense of empowerment and hope. Attending these events made me feel proud of my Hispanic heritage...

Reflectionessay

...Reflection Essay DeVry Comparative Religion 448 Reflection Essay Religion has been viewed as one of the most controversial topics in society. There are many different religious groups worldwide with even more subcategories within each religion. I would consider myself to be a part of the Jewish faith, but I do not practice my religion. Therefore I interviewed my girlfriend who is a part of the Christian belief system. Although she doesn’t claim to be a devout Catholic who attends mass every Sunday, she respects and acknowledges the traditions of her religion and observes the many holidays. When belonging to a specific parish, it involves being an active member of the Catholic community. This entails attending mass on Sundays, as well as the holidays throughout the year. It also means partaking in activities, and donating money and services to a specific church. Often, a parish will have a school for children to grow academically as well as spiritually. My girlfriend growing up attended a private Catholic school from the age of 4-18. Throughout her fourteen years, she was actively involved in her parish, including receiving all of her sacraments. My girlfriend considered receiving the sacraments to be an emotional experience as well as a ritual. There are seven sacraments in the Catholic Church that are not mandatory, but considered to be necessary for salvation. Many Catholics do not receive all seven. This could directly be an example of some...

Current Issues Paper - Buddhism

...Current Issues Paper: Buddhism Mark A. Fekete REL/133 04/18/2016 James Finch Current Issues Paper and Class Handout Religion is a cultural system of behaviors and practices, mythologies, world views, sacred texts, holy places, ethics, and social organizations that relate humanity to what an anthropologist has called "an order of existence". The world is comprised of a wide range of religions that impart regular practices and convictions to each other and this paper will inspect normal qualities that Buddhism offers with different religions and in addition examine how Buddhism has reacted to challenges in the current and what has changed about the roles of females in Buddhism after some time. Buddhism The History of Buddhism spans the 6th century BC to the present, starting with the birth of Siddhartha Gautama in Lumbini, Nepal. This makes it one of the oldest religions practiced today. Its roots started in India from the encounters noted by Siddhartha Gautama, a “mortal prince born miraculously to Maya who was kept from all the evil and misery of the world throughout his youth” ("Siddhartha Gautama," 1996). Siddhartha was forbidden to leave the royal grounds; in any case one day he defied those request given by his dad and went to a close-by town where he saw what is known as the four passing sights. The four passing sights were “an old man, crooked and toothless, a sick man, wasted by disease, and a corpse being taken for cremation. Then...

Rome

...Andrea Jaramillo Reflection Paper Christians in the Roman Empire Todays class lecture made me want to reflect on the persecutions on Christians during the Roman Empire and how they remained so strong to their religion. The persecution of Christians began with Caesar Nero in the year 64 d. C. The letter to Diognotes gives us more insight on the real thought of the Romans of the Christians: Christians are distinguished from the other inhabitants of the Roman Empire not by customs but for their behavior. So they stand out for their exemplary behavior. Also, he says that while living on earth, know that they will one day live in heaven. But it also tells us that they are insulted, persecuted and punished as if they were criminals. Christians however, following the teachings of Christ, loved his pursuers. There are reasons why Christians were prosecuted: - They refused to do military service. -They not involved in the terrible circus shows. -No worshiped the emperor and saw this as an affront to God. -Many people see Christians as strange beings who performed clandestine meetings of questionable content. -They were accused of infanticide (killing young children), of cannibalism (ie cannibalism) and grave moral disorder. -They were accused of going against atheists and Roman customs, because the Romans were polytheistic and monotheistic Christians. -They were accused of many things that did not as the famous fire of Rome in 64 d. C. -The intellectuals of the time...

Value Reflection Paper

...Values Reflection Paper Thomas Guerrero CJA 474 November 24, 2014 David Pettinari Values Reflection Paper Regardless of whether people work in the government or private sector, military or civilian, they will commonly ask, “what are my core values?” Most people are taught personal values from the early years of childhood, and throughout adolescence. In addition to parents, many public figures instill some values (such as respect) in the minds of young adults stronger than other values. Respect is one of my core values, and something that most kids from inner-city Chicago learn about. This paper focuses on core values. In this paper, I will reflect on my core values, describe the development and change of values, and explain the nature and importance of human values in the workplace. Core Values With the numerous amounts of social influences today, it may be hard for adolescents to decide which vales they believe to be most important. However, adolescents and adults are constantly faced with the question, what do you want to be or do in life? According to De Janasz, Dowd, & Schneider (2001), “Identifying your values will help you answer the question “What do I want to achieve with my life?” Once you determine your values and why they are important to you, you can then work on a plan for achieving your goals (p. 51).” Growing up in the tough neighborhoods of Chicago, it is easy to learn the values of right and wrong. It’s learned from award ceremonies...

...Personal Reflection Paper Personal Reflection Paper Invidious comparison is a harmful correlation that demonstration one’s individual view of others as indicated by another as per their class, race, sex, or religion. This is a negative practice to adapt to. I work daily trying to redirect my mind from comparing myself to others; it is human nature to have these thoughts. I have notice when I do compare myself to others I become sad because I have not reach the level of their success and the flip side to this is I never compare myself to anyone less fortunate than me. No one win at comparing themselves to others. The direction I have taken to stop invidious comparing myself to other are concentrating on my own beauty. I have created a habit in tell myself how beautiful I am every time I look in the mirror. I made a short and long term list to help me keep up with my progress. Watching my list advance keeps me center on and therefore, I can see my growth. These habits have helped me to appreciate who I am. I enjoy writing in my journal several days a week it helps to shift the atmosphere from comparing myself to other. A saying I like to quote is “doing unto others as you would have them do unto you”. To me, that quote is telling me to be kind to other people and help them. If this is done I won’t have time to compare myself to anyone. Last, I stay focus on the positive things I do in helping other and this help me to appreciate what is positive in me. The definition of vicarious...

Personal Reflection Paper

...Personal Reflection Paper Personal Reflection Paper In this paper, I am going to identify a point of time in which I experienced invidious comparison and vicarious traumatization. While identifying theses to aspects, I am also going to address how to stop invidious comparison. As well as identifying strategies that I use to avoid vicarious traumatization in my own personal life. I will also go in to depth to show how to avoid vicarious traumatization as a human service worker. Lastly, I am going to address the strategies that can be considered or developed to avoid vicarious traumatization. What is invidious comparison? Invidious comparison is the comparing yourself to others. It can be through race, sexual orientation, and religion. Invidious comparison can make a person feel that their self-worth is not wanted and even take its toll on the person doing the comparison themselves. It can send you into a depressive state where you develop levels of stress. To stop invidious comparison, we must first get an understanding on others and accept the different views that other may possess. Everyone is different in their own way. There will also be an individual that may excel in different things that you may have thought you were good in. Some may be incapable of abilities that one may have. By understanding these aspects we must acknowledge the strengths that we have and do not have without dwelling on the weaknesses of others. Everywhere we go there are comparisons, it is important...

Personal Reflection

...Personal Reflection Paper BSHS/345 November 10, 2014 Personal Reflection Paper Invidious comparison and vicarious traumatization are two very real concepts in life. However, when working in the human service field, both concepts must be controlled to avoid negative outcomes. This paper will describe two concepts and how each has played a part in my life. The first concept of discussion is invidious comparison. The second topic of discussion will focus on vicarious traumatization. Aside from how both concepts have affected me personally, I will examine strategies that can help me avoid vicarious traumatization as a human service worker. The first concept of discussion is invidious comparison. According to Merriam-Webster (2014), invidious comparison is defined as “tending to cause discontent, animosity or envy”. In other words, invidious comparison is when a person compares themselves to others by class, religion, sex, and race. While this concept occurs to everyone, and seems to be a normal part of human nature, negative ramifications such as poor self-esteem, depression, and stress may result if not directed in the correct manner. The concept of invidious comparison is one I can relate to well. For many years, I used to compare myself to those who had more money that I did. While I am ashamed to admit how shallow I was, this comparison brought me into a state of depression. It was during my depressed mode that I realized that I needed to take control of...
