During week two our class objectives were to learn about planning function of management, analyzing various factors that influence strategic, tactical, operational, and contingency planning. As well as analyzing the effect that legal issues, ethics, and corporate social responsibility have on management planning.
As discussed by Team D, we most certainly agree that we learned the stated, not only as a team, but as individuals. We all come from different walks of life and backgrounds; this diversity is what makes working together as a team so great. We all agree that we can apply what we learned to our professional or personal lives. Analyzing week two, we agreed that we had an inside look on what the six steps are during the planning process. These steps are situational analysis, alternative goals and plans, goals and evaluation, goals and plan selection, implementation, and finally monitor and control. We agree these steps are most important in the planning process and play an important role in setting up alternative goals and plans. We also concur it is a good idea to have an alternative plans, in case the original plan falls through the cracks. Having a backup plan is a great way to run a business and minimize risk. Areg from our team shared an example of how he has applied this to his life, when he was coaching basketball his duties were to analyze the other team and make plans, so the team goals would be accomplished. The kids in his team had to be monitored and controlled as well as the other team to make sure my kids are staying healthy and also to know if something happened to the other teams’ players. Greg, also shared how some of what he has learned is being applied in his professional life. Greg, is a

Management In chapter one, we learned about the four key elements that make the current business landscape very different from the one we knew in the past. These are known as globalization, technological change including the development and applications of the Internet, knowledge management and collaboration across organizational boundaries. Managing in the New Competitive Landscape We learned that globalization is one of the most important part is any business. ...Learning Team Reflection Angela Lewis (Alcoset), Dawn Nyberg, J. Troy McMurtrey, Tammie Scott ETH /316 January 16, 2012 Ted Haas Learning Team Reflection Simulations administer a productive learning environment for students. The use of simulations in education is becoming an effective tool for students and offers several benefits. A major benefit of simulations is that it enhances the problem solving skills of a student. This week Team D went through two simulations that allowed us to make ethical decisions based on the four lenses, where each had a different perspective in the decision-making process. In this summary, Team D will compare and contrast the usefulness of doing assignments based on simulations as opposed to writing paper s that answer questions. Team D will also make a decision regarding which we prefer as a team and provide the reasons. When comparing the usefulness of doing assignments based on simulations as opposed to writing papers that mostly answer questions, Team D finds there are differences between the two. Doing assignments based on simulations is a structured approach, which gives the opportunity for a more hands learning experience. Writing papers that mostly answer questions is a different approach that externalizes our learning. One needs to find information to answer the questions asked when writing a paper. This may require some research...

Reflection on Mentorship Practice

...Examples of Reflective Writing Example 1 I arrived on the ward at 7:30 ready to begin a 12-hour shift. After receiving handover, my mentor assigned me the job of bathing Mr B with the help of a healthcare assistant. Mr B has Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), a progressive disease of the nervous system with rapid deterioration due to spongiform encephalopathy. He is not expected to live to Christmas, even though he is only 19 years old. He is mentally aware of what is going on but is physically unable to demonstrate activities of daily living, including eating and drinking, has limited communication skills and is doubly incontinent. He is unsafe on his feet so mobilises with a wheelchair. I approached Mr B’s bed and asked his consent to take him for a bath. While the bath was running we began helping him to undress. He looked rather nervous. At the thought of myself being in his position, being the same age as him, I began to feel embarrassed too. I thought that I could not possibly be a professional individual if I let my embarrassment and sympathy get in the way of my nursing care. We assisted Mr B into the bath and started his wash. I knew he was uncomfortable and wanted to be able to wash himself, but was unable to do so. I was finding it difficult to look him in the eye, especially when it came to washing his genitalia. I tried to ease this by making conversation, but in a way this made matters worse. After the bath we dried Mr B, dressed him and returned him...

...Reflection Summary Week 3 This week we discussed the power of wireless devices, delved further into information systems, discussed protection of information assets, and probed some of the functions of Microsoft Excel as an office automation tool. We utilized two sources of readings from chapters in Introduction to Information Systems and Microsoft® Office 2010. We also participated in peer to peer discussions to evaluate our understanding of the subject matter. Wireless Technology Many of the wireless technologies today are well known and understood from an operator standpoint. That comes from the common necessity of technology in our daily lives. What are not so well known are the associated security concerns that come with operating on a wireless platform? This week we touched on the threats that encompass these technologies. Information Systems We briefly touched on and broad stroked information systems in week one. This week we began a more in-depth review of some of these systems. In particular we examined Transaction Processing systems and Expert Systems which utilizes artificial intelligence to assist in the decision making process within the functional areas of an company. We also read and discussed data mining and data analysis. That discussion facilitated our understanding of when it is best to utilize Microsoft Excel and when to opt for Microsoft Access. Protecting Information Assets This week in our technology review we discussed actions that...

...Consulting Case Memo -- Outline Executive Summary While this section appears first, it should actually be the last thing you write. * The executive summary should be no more than one page. * Executive summaries are not “introductions.” They do not provide background. * Everything discussed in the executive summary should be explained in greater detail in the body of the memo. * If the only thing someone reads is your executive summary, your reader should have a good understanding of the problem, your proposal, the most important cost(s), and the most important benefit(s). Problem Statement Identify the problem in business terms. State clearly why the owner, president, or CEO should care about addressing the problem you’ve identified. Proposed Solution Identify the one most important action the company or organization needs to take to address the problem. Be as specific as possible in describing your solution. Costs of the Proposal Be as inclusive as possible when thinking about costs. Consider things like opportunity costs and the impact of the proposed change on the organization’s culture in addition to the more obvious financial costs. Identify every possible objection to your proposal. Why hasn’t the company already taken this step? The quickest way to have your recommendation rejected is to hear an objection to which you must reply, “I hadn’t thought of that.” Benefits of the Proposal How will your specific proposal address the problem you’ve...

...reflecting over the therapeutic communication that’s shown in this video, it has helped me developed different techniques that are used with this communication and how to approach these techniques in the best way. Using Discolls reflection cycle, the ‘what’ comes first, describing what has happened in the situation. The therapeutic communication in this video starts with the Radiographer Peter, abruptly entering the room of pregnant patient Sally, who has seemed to have had a stroke. Not realizing that Sally can’t talk, Peter immediately starts to ask her questions before Sally’s husband has to step in and explain what her situation is. Peter then carry’s on asking Sally’s husband questions about herself and explains that he needs to do a CT scan of her brain. Peter then makes it clear that because a CT scan requires them to use radiation that there is harm to the baby. Sally’s husband becomes concerned and tries to sort out with Peter if this is really the best way to do this scan. With some explaining by Peter of why they need to do this scan, Sally’s husband then understands that they need to make the diagnoses of Sally first. Discolls cycle of reflection then follows up with the ‘so what’, where the analyzing of this event occurs. By using the summary of therapeutic communication techniques by Julia Balzer Riley...
