My stomach was rumbling, I was bored, sad, happy, or just because ice cream and donuts looked and tasted good. I never really gave much thought into why my body needs food. I now realize that the food we eat provides the energy our bodies need to function. Like gas in one’s car or recharging our cell phones our bodies need to be fed energy to maintain our activities every day. It is our little helpers of vitamins and minerals that provide the adequate balance that keeps or bodies healthy. Every assignment that we had to do was a new learning experience. I like every assignment because it taught me something that I never thought about, especially the digestive system. This makes me realize how intricate our bodies are, and the transformation that happen when we open our mouth. It taught me how food and liquid are absorbed by the entire body and how this complex system is the secret to our health. The assignments on the diet analysis, obesity, and healthy eating plan helped me learn the most about my nutrition and what I can do to improve it. The assignment that I enjoyed the most was the three-day diet analysis for both week one and week six. These assignments helped me see what I was consuming too much of and what I was not consuming enough of. I found out that I was consuming too much of the mineral sodium, which in my family leads to high blood pressure. I also found out that I am not consuming near enough fruits and vegetables. This was very interesting to me to see exactly how this process works and all the different areas that we have that work as one for the digestion process to occur. I did try a new diet plan that USDA Food Guide Pyramid suggested and ate more different kinds of foods that were recommended out of my normal routine. I felt that it just was not for me. Although I did start eating more dark green vegetables and other types of vegetables that I normally would not eat because of the type of diet lifestyle I was on, and I feel it has made me feel better about myself that I am getting the nutrients that I need to be healthy. I started this in the week one assignment: Fundamentals of health and diet. This lesson also taught me the importance that introducing the different kinds of vegetables and foods to my diet was more healthful to me. I also learned this in week five: The impact of water, Vitamins and Minerals. It was sort of a change of pace for us as everything we had talked about had been geared towards careers and majors. But her talking about nutrition and the need to stay healthy was, in my opinion, just as important as all of the other stuff we have talked about. When you are healthy and feeling good, it makes everything in your life better including your job. When she told us how our plates should be arranged and how much of each food group we should have on the plate was very interesting. I didn’t realize that you would need to eat that much fruit and vegetables compared to the other groups. I thought it would be about a fourth together, but it was actually closer to half the plate of vegetables and fruit. Another cool thing she talked about was how to eat healthy in the dining courts. That is a very big issue because it is buffet style and when you see that fresh tray of cookies coming out it can be very tempting to eat about five of them. Many Americans do not pay attention to the serving sizes on the nutrition labels which leads to consuming a massive amount of sugar per day. The facts provided in the documentaries can help people have a better understanding of their sugar consumption and maintain good health. One of the facts that can really help is four grams of sugar equals in teaspoon, men should have about nine teaspoons of sugar per day while women should have around six. As our sugar consumption has grows, so does our bodies. Our risk of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease increases because of the excess amount of sugar in our diets. In one of the documentaries, it specified that a lot of the research about sugar and the evidence provided comes from animal trials which made me question some of the evidence. In another documentary it was explained that sugar is made up of two molecules, glucose and fructose; glucose helps fuel our muscles and our brain while the fructose (which is also in our fruits) is separated and goes to the liver. Too much fructose can liver fat and can start a downstream of metabolic diseases. I don’t necessarily agree with calling sugar “poisonous” and “toxic”. Too much of anything can be bad for you.
