She turned to me and said, “I can’t read”, and with those three words, I felt my stomach drop. What does she mean she can’t read, I ask myself? I look towards my friend and see my thoughts reflected in her face; disbelief. A third grader, Ashley should be devouring books like Charlotte’s Webs and Stuart Littles by the dozen. Yet she sits there before me, looking at everything but her homework, because the words on the page intimidate and repel her, rather than invite her in. Like many of my peers, I had nurtured the idea of giving back to the community by dedicating my time, had found what seemed to be the perfect opportunity in the form of the Elizabeth Coalition to House the Homeless. I looked forward to meeting the kids, and providing what guidance I could as a mentor figure, but hopefully as a friend as well. Considering it was my first afternoon with them, I had not anticipated to be thrown for a loop moments after being asked to help Ashley with her homework. I fumbled my words, because I could not find what to say to reconcile the fact that Ashley did not have the reading capability she should have, truly, that she deserved to have. …show more content…
I wondered if I was truly fit to teach her. Despite this, when I came back the next day and saw how willing she was to work to learn, I was inspired. I kept returning, and steadily saw her not only her reading but her confidence improve. By the end of the month, she often completed her English homework before I even arrived, and would instead offer to read to me. I was touched that she had allowed me to be a part of her journey in developing a love for literature. Though I had been there along the way, she had truly succeeded in advancing her abilities through her own time and
