At the start of the semester when I registered for this class I thought it would just a walk in the park kind of experience, but I have come to understand that as the course goes on that the class will enable me to interact with other classmates, creating more confidence in me by improving my writing, social and leadership skills. The case study exercise exposed the art of mobilizing others to want to struggle for shared aspirations and also how one person makes a difference in a group. Writing about my personal goals and reflective essay, made me see how much I have improved in my writing and learning. Most of all this class helps me to know more about the role of leadership in supply chain management. The student leadership challenge as I was made to understand is to help me identify able set of skills and abilities that will enable me to effect a change in my present environment and also in the future. I learned that in group projects that each person is accountable for something in a group and if one person messes up than the whole group gets the consequence of the result. I can truly say that I have learned general research techniques and can apply these academic disciplines for my personal use as well as on the job. For the “Majors Essay” I selected a topic of interest for myself and conducted research. My focus in the past for writing papers was generally gathering as much information as possible from the web. For this assignment I had to learn new techniques that were necessary for researching topics in a real library. I felt the assignment was presented with enough information to form an outline and begin writing. The difficulty for me was remembering the five-part essay format that was learned in freshman comp and structuring my introduction. Writing an annotated bibliography was a process that allowed me to explore the methods that scholars use to organize and record information that will be used in their projects. I learned better ways of note taking as well as summarizing. Learning how to understand and evaluate sources and identifying what is needed is a skill I can carry wherever I go. A decade or so ago, faculty and administrators in a few institutions around the country became aware that, increasingly, students entering college had difficulty doing as well in academic studies as their abilities suggested they should be able to do. Some of these students were in many ways poorly prepared academically. Many more of them, however, had on paper excellent secondary preparation. The common denominator among the poorly prepared and the apparently well prepared seemed to be that, for cultural reasons we may not yet fully under stand, all these students had difficulty adapting to the traditional or "normal" conventions of the college classroom. For the purpose of this assignment I will refer to this patient as Mrs C to maintain confidentiality and comply with the NMC code (2008). It will discuss the importance of non-verbal communication when providing effective nursing care to the elderly. Description Thoughts and Feelings Evaluation I felt this first experience was very rewarding and a big learning curve for me in caring for others. I was delighted that I had been able to support Mrs C to eat nearly all of her meal which she clearly enjoyed. The ‘protected mealtime’ policy ensured that I had time to dedicate to assist her and as she did not have the ability to feed herself, without my help she would have eaten very little or nothing at all. In order to communicate with Mrs C, I modified the usual rules of communication. I did not speak to Mrs C in an inappropriate way or use elder talk which may have damaged her self esteem and confidence (Argle 1994). I talked to her as I would address any adult but put more emphasis on non-verbal communication which according to Caris Verhallen (1999) is the main way in which humans communicate, in order for her to receive my message, extract the meaning and give me feedback.
