The Examination

“Attention! Do not look at the booklet at all!” the woman on the stage announced seriously.
I already knew the rules by heart. I whispered to myself, “Oh, please! Stop annoying me at this crucial time!”
I was so nervous that all I could do to calm myself down was stare at the sky through the window close to the ceiling. I saw birds were chasing one another and an airplane with a maple-leaf logo was drawing a line of cloud across the air. The blue sky tempted me and kept on shouting, “Hey, don’t stay inside! Come out and relax!”
I replied, “I will, but just give me a few more hours!”
The remote sky looked as if it didn’t understand what my feelings were.
The room with echoes was guarded by four brick walls brushed in dull white. They glared at us and said without mercy, “Keep quiet, and be patient!” …show more content…
They all looked anxious, like me, sitting evenly inside the room. We were all like soldiers, ready for the combat after a gruesome and long training. Even if we were afraid to be defeated, we still had the courage to join the fight.
Tick! Lub-dub! Tock! My heart was synchronized with the rhythm of the clock counting down to the battle. The past events started to randomly irritate inside my brain, and they wouldn’t allow me to relax.
My father’s words of wisdom flashed up into my mind. He mentored me, “Son, you only have two choices in life: You either study hard with sweat to aim for a win or shred tears to accept a loss.” I realized that the latter was not an option.
My memory unconsciously switched to another scene where my mom had driven me to the private tutorial class. She hushed, “Honey, the tuition fee costs our family a lot. You must make sure that you

Admitly, it become increasingly more difficult, as the Vietnamese stormed in, but it still never flawed to amaze me, that in the worst of times, they still stuck together and never gave up. Notes Of A Warrior's Son Rhetorical Analysis

...An Inevitable Transition from Vietnam to America The aftermath of the Vietnam war was tremendous. Many Vietnamese were relocated, some South Vietnamese generals taking refuge in America. Andrew Lam was the son of one of those generals and he and his family were refugees in American when Lam decided to adopt the American way of life for better or worse. In his essay, “Notes of a Warrior’s Son,” Andrew Lam uses an anecdotal style coupled with reflective diction and symbolism to justify and express his uncertainty with his own cultural transition from a Vietnamese culture, to an Americanized one. Lam began his essay by using anecdotal style, narrating the story of his father leaving Vietnam. He writes that, “he folded away his army uniform, changed into a pair of jeans and a shirt, and, now a stateless man, tossed his gun into the water” (24). By beginning his essay with an anecdote from his father he sets a more personal tone. This tone help the reader feel more sympathetic to Lam’s struggles. In this same quote he began using the...

Sharon Kraus Facing It Poem Analysis

...Facing the Deeper Meaning In an essay Poetry for Students, Sharon Kraus analyzes “Facing It”, a poem written by Yusef Komunyakaa. She covers the importance of minimalism, identity along with experience, irony, confusion, and ambiguity. First, she speaks of how “simple” the “minimalist monument” truly is, yet it holds a deeper meaning. Kraus explains that on first glance, it seems that people, including the speaker, are only looking at the monument with its reflective surface and dark, simple design. However, upon delving more into the hidden meaning, representations, and thoughts you come to find out that the speaker is not peering solely at “actual people and things” in the reflection. While this monument is “unlike traditional” pieces, the monument posses a “message.” A message that you, the looker, the admirer, are “among the fallen,” and that not only are you scanning your gaze so carelessly across...

Family Diversity and Culture

...Alexander, Ed.D. Walden University My childhood family adapted to the “The Standard North American Family” (SNAF). My family was a traditional African American family whereas they sought each other for the union of marriage. In Louisiana, most families did not practice arranged marriages and kinship marriages. In other words, boy meet girl and vice versa, fall in love and get married. Both parents were present in my childhood home along with my three siblings. My father was not the ultimate “breadwinner” of the family. My mother worked and contributed to the economic resources of our family too. Neither of my parents’ attended a four-year college. My father served four years in the Army and served two of those years in the Vietnam War. My mother earned an Associate’s Degree in Business from Delgado University. My parents held respectable and descent paying jobs. My father is a retired welder of 30 years from the Local Union 60. My mom is a retired customer service representative of 33 years of service from AT&T. They are now retired and enjoying life even more. Christianity is a very important characteristic of my family. We attended church almost every Sunday. I attended Sunday school, participated in the youth choir, and attended vacation bible school (VBS). Family bonds and values are important characteristics of my family too. My cousins and I grew up close as if we were siblings. We attended church services and then everyone went to our grandparents’...

...essential to establish what is meant by a status quo or revisionist power. Hans Morgenthau described a status quo power as one that favours and aims to maintain “the distribution of power as it exists at a particular moment in history”,. Similarly, proponents of power transition theory use the concept of the “rules of the game” regarding nations’ power relations to define status quo and revisionist states, the latter desiring to “redraft the rules” out of a “general dissatisfaction” with their share in the system. Randall Schweller furthers this point by adding military force as a requisite of such ambitions to amend the status quo. For the purpose of this essay, whether a power is status quo or revisionist will be determined by whether its policies aim at acquiring a new power order in its favour. Using this yardstick, this essay will elaborate China’s current behaviour and underlying aspirations to argue that it would be inappropriate or at least premature to stamp the country ‘revisionist’. I will also incorporate Morgenthau’s viewpoint on a status quo’s ‘minor adjustments’ into my reasoning of China’s policy to argue that what could be currently perceived as evidence of Chinese aggressive ambitions are not attempts to reverse the current power relations but merely manifestations of a self-defensive behaviour and natural adjustments in fair proportion to its multidimensional growth. I will first establish that China’s seeking hegemony contradicts with its Confucian principles...

...Biography of Nick Joaquín (1917-2004) Posted on September 15, 2010 by Pepe Nicomedes "Nick" Joaquín This is the best biography of Nick that I’ve encountered so far… The 1996 Ramón Magsaysay Award for Journalism, Literature and Creative Communication Arts BIOGRAPHY of Nick Joaquín Resil B. Mojares He was the greatest Filipino writer of his generation. Over six decades and a half, he produced a body of work unmatched in richness and range by any of his contemporaries. Living a life wholly devoted to the craft of conjuring a world through words, he was the writer’s writer. In the passion with which he embraced his country’s manifold being, he was his people’s writer as well. Nick Joaquín was born in the old district of Pacò in Manila, Philippines, on September 15, 1917, the feast day of Saint Nicomedes, a protomartyr of Rome, after whom he took his baptismal name. He was born to a home deeply Catholic, educated, and prosperous. His father, Leocadio Joaquín, was a person of some prominence. Leocadio was a procurador (attorney) in the Court of First Instance of Laguna, where he met and married his first wife, at the time of the Philippine Revolution. He shortly joined the insurrection, had the rank of colonel, and was wounded in action. When the hostilities ceased and the country came under American rule, he built a successful practice in law. Around 1906, after the death of his first wife, he married Salomé Márquez, Nick’s mother. A friend of General Emilio Aguinaldo, Leocadio...

In the early years of the 20th century, HSBC widened its activities in the East and became increasingly involved in the issuing of loans to national governments, especially in China, to finance modernisation and internal infrastructure projects such as railway building. Decade of Revolution

...The 1960s was a decade filled with change. It started out with optimism among America’s youth that was unprecedented in history. Before too long headlines of civil rights, university reform, pacifist movement against the Vietnam War, women’s rights, and sexual liberation were made and the “Camelot” vision was quickly shattered. America’s youth began to revolt against the establishment and the foregone conclusion that they would adopt the lifestyle of their parents. In ten short years societal norms were turned completely around. Never before had change happened so quickly or been driven by the same group. This rapid change is breathtaking, considering most young people are generally naïve and disinterested in events outside their immediate scope. I have therefore decided to investigate what role the media played in the youth revolutions of the 1960s. This paper will identify media’s influence in driving change and analyze relationships between media, specific historical events, and the reaction of America’s youth. This will be achieved by looking at both primary and secondary sources to determine how much influence the media played in manipulating America’s youth via songs, marketing, and select writings. The media industry’s reaction to the social and technological upheavals of the twentieth century was to encapsulate the mantra “youth as fun” and sell it to America’s teens. . It was the social exposure that the media promoted that resulted in the heightening...

...for survival of man against man and man against nature. Some characters survive, others don’t. Most films can be analyzed more thoroughly to reveal deeper levels of meaning. A review (perhaps 400-1200 words) typically includes personal impressions and evaluations of a movie’s content and techniques. A good review may be subjective, yet still touch superficially on topics that might be explored in more detail in a longer formal analysis. An analysis (perhaps 1200-12,000 words) attempts to determine how the film actually uses various cinematic techniques and elements of film or narrative form to make a viewer react in a certain way and why it makes viewers come away with certain opinions about it. Serious film criticism, whether essays written for magazines, journals, books, or class assignments,...
